I have heard of the Residents. Actually, I have 2 CD's from them. One is called "The King and I" and consists of Elvis covers intermixed with a strange story convulving Elvis and Jesus. I also have a CD named "The Freak Show" which shows some simularities to Primus' "Tales from the Punchbowl" by telling the stories of various freaks and bizzarities (similar in theme only). Actually, on Pork Soda in the song "The Air is Getting Slippery", Les actually refers to The Residents. This band is really out there. Most of their songs are hard to even label as songs. They definitely cannot be considered a contemporary of Tool (or anyone, maybe other than Primus, at that). - FORD ------------------------------ Topic No. 11 Date: Wed, 2 Aug 1995 22:15:53 +0200 From: static@prometheus.hol.gr (Tassos Nickogiannis) To: tool-list@visix.com Subject: Re:non-tool question Message-ID: <199508022015.WAA20135@prometheus.hol.gr> On Wed, 2 Aug 1995, Kevin wrote: > This isn't even remotly Tool related,so bear > with me. I' ve been lucky enough to have seen them performing live, although i can't be sure whether that was a pure live show or not, since most of the stuff seemed to be midi-triggered, dat's and stuff, but it was a great show (back in 1989 or 1990, at a full-packed 1500-seater in Athens, Greece), with lots of theatrical elements, excellent lights etc, so who gives a shit if it was pure live or not. Back then, the Residents were doing a tribute to Elvis type of tour but, to be honest, most of the songs were hardly recognizable(thank god!). I remember that they were all wearing black uniforms and masks and we never actually got to see their faces (it's the band's policy for twenty years now, not to let anyone see their faces-no relation to Kiss whatsoever). If i could describe their music with one word i would just say that it is "mean". One of my best friends happens to have their full back catalogue, every single thing they have ever released. O.K. i can hear you all yelling at me "we don't wanna know about the fucking Residents", but i believe that it's far more worth it, discussing about the Residents, than STP or Silverchair (I still haven't listened to them). Sound like a weird question, I know, but when I saw them last year up in Baltimore at HammerJacks he looked kinda like a rooster. I was standing kinda behind and to the right of the stage admiring his spinal tattoo when noticed. He was standing straight-legged, one leg a little in front of the other, bending forward at the waist. His upper body was arched backward (kinda looked like a question mark). Both his arms were out to the sides at shoulder level, with the elbows bent to 90 degree angles, mike hand towards his head, the other hand (balled in a fist) towards the ground. He seemed to be in this position whenever he was singing, but looked normal (well, relatively speaking) when not. Anyone else notice this? Could this position be the source of the mighty Vocal Power we are in awe of? Listening to Opiate and Undertow, you could think there was a lot of maturing going on. I've read in a couple interviews though where the band said they wanted their ep to have a rougher edge. So they took all the songs that were more straight out adrenaline rock and put them on Opiate. Then people complained when Undertow came out because these people thought the band was going to be heavy metal and they were so much more. >I hope this made things clear and not worse. yep.
