Well, in an interview in Guitar World magazine, Vernon Reid of Living Colour cited the Flintstones as a major influence in his guitar playing. I was going to a Rollins Band show at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis with some friends of mine. I like all sorts of music, like Helmet to Ministry to other less heavy stuff. Anyway, the opening band comes out, and the singer is all hunched over and gyrating and he has this big tatoo that follows his spine. I was thinking, "what the fuck is this?". But they kicked my ass. Rollins was unbelievable as usual, but Tool really shocked me. It was cool though, because that is what opening bands are supposed to do: kick your ass and make you go out and buy their record, even though 2 hours ago you would never have. I bought "Opiate" the next day, and the rest is history. By the way, I listen to a lot of softer stuff than Tool, and also a lot harder stuff. I don't think it makes me any less of a man by the fact that I listen to Soul Asylum or Matthew Sweet than if all I listened to was Clutch and Biohazzard and other shit. Those who just like one type of music - that's totally cool. I used to listen to punk/hardcore exclusively. Just don't slam others for what they like, especially if they like the same things you do. Not that I'm tryin' to preach or anything... In case you're wonderin', yes I do like Toad the Wet Sprocket AND the Toadies, and no, I hate the Gin Blossoms and Hootie. I got dragged along by some fellow employees at my brand-spanking-new job at Tower, and nobody seemed to know who Tool was, including yours truly. I was face-to-face with Maynard. Scary. We were up front, and the floor was totally empty -- everyone's attitude was like, what band could possibly open for Rollins, as a prelude to his intensity? Of course Tool didn't give a shit and fucking rocked. We were slowly crushed as their set progressed and people realized that this was a band to be reckoned with. Maynard picked out this girl and stared at her like he does through the whole set, fury just radiating from him and the rest of the band. The Edge's got a nice big floor and it became a swirling pit of mayhem, and I was converted. The funny thing was it took me so long to find out this mystery band's name... nobody knew. Rollins was killer (though the highlight was his hockey-masked, genital-pouch wearing security ogre) and I eventually learned that the opening band was Tool. I got Opiate as my first employee discount CD the next day. Life is good. Martin Hunter Caplan Web Designer Lad WAIS Incorporated http://www.wais.com/marty/ marty@wais.com "Be cool. Don't panic. Something to the extent of " Novus Opiate Spectorum....." I can't remember if that's exactly what it said. -Andrew > ********************************************************** Sid L. My fondest memory of That show was when before they came on they played the soundrack of a Porno film. Absolutely crazy! There was no mistaking it that she was a wild black woman. She did all the talking, yelling, moaning. It was fuking crazy! I was so horny by the time the show started that if it wasn't for the rain keeping my furnace cool, I might have started making love with my miniature five-legged girlfriend right there in bare public. chew it, tjr ------------------------------ Topic No. 33 Date: Tue, 8 Aug 95 17:26 EST From: matts@mpx.com.au (Matt Steadman) To: tool-list@visix.com Cc: jud@wonderland.apana.org.au.russm@kendaco.telebyte.com.Toolophile@aol.com Subject: Re: Census?? Nah... saw them in wet Melbourne. It was weird, I didn't think that many people had heard of them, but the whole place was a sea of Tool t-shirts (literally! It's never rained so hard in Melbourne ever. Perhaps it was god punishing us for seeing a band play "Opiate" on Easter sunday! :D ). >PRIMUS SUCK! On their first album, Les (the bassist/singer) comes out and says "We're Primus, and we suck!!" From then on, every concert that they play, the crowd starts chanting "You suck, you suck..." It's kinda catchy. >hey, someone wanna do me a favor and tell me if any of this mail that i'm >sendin' is goin' through.... Thanx.. Yeah, all 5 posts. I personally think this whole rooster thing is crap. I just think he stands like that cause it's hard to sing what he's singing! Try it... go on, sing a couple of bars of Jerk Off. Bloody difficult to get that force in your voice, ain't it? That's why I think he stands like that.
