It's about 25 minutes north of D.C. It is the most inbred, inhibited viewed, trendy, redneck, "TOOL who?", fucked up, snobby, commercial, wealthy, "I can buy you", town that I have ever known. The weirdest part is that I am living here. There are around 13 TOOL fans in this town and they are all my best friends. I just saw Rage Against the Machine, live, last night. They kicked white trash ass. I was in the pit during the entire show. Public Enemy opened up for them, and that was also a kick ass performance. I want to see tour with Clutch, Rage, Rollins Band, and Tool. It sounds close to Lollapolooza, but this would be more appealing to the lovers of anger, hostility, truth, and physical growth, like me. My first experience with tool was very amazing. I was sitting in my room and my roomate was playing his music. Suddenly this song came on that gave me the chills, it was sober. The song really pissed me off and I liked it, it brought emotions out that I never new existed. The point being, that this is the only music that I can feel. Most people can listen to music and say "this really SOUNDS great", but can many people say "this music FEELS great", this is what tool does for me. Song after song they all can be felt, not just heard. I have never experienced a more powerful band! Let me know if this does the same to some of you as well. steve On Mon, 14 Aug 1995, Nathaniel Lynch wrote: > Date: Mon, 14 Aug 1995 20:57:13 -0400 > From: Nathaniel Lynch > To: Multiple recipients of list > Subject: RE: where YOU are > > > those who do not like tool are either without a clue or have not ever truly > listened to the music. So they've recently gotten back together and started over. Rumor has it that Tool is going to be playing the southeast U.S. in September/October . . . has anyone heard anything more, or is this just crap? About the tool/airplay thing, I heard Sober and Prison Sex a few times each when they were first being released . . . heard Prison Sex again this weekend on a largely commercial station . . . and they're played fairly often on my campus radio station (whenever I'm on the air :) L. ------------------------------ Topic No. 32 Date: Tue, 15 Aug 1995 17:39:52 -0400 From: Michael Shurpik To: tool-list@visix.com Subject: Re: i beg to differ... I'm going to go over your email line by line (except for the latin) and figure out whether I agree or disagree! > No Tool fan really believes that the band isn't better, *objectively* better, > than, say, the Osmonds. Right. Tool is Lord. > many Tool fans would be hard-pressed to say exactly *why* that is so, Yeah, I guess, but I also think that I could give a pretty coherent argument for why they are so good and/or describe why I find their creativity more valid than other bands' work. > We understand very little about the way music works on the emotions Agreed. > If music were entirely subjective, what would be the point of discussing it? Yes, definitely. In classical music, there is not as much of a problem because a) there is a new genre every fifty years, not every five - therefore, it gets mulled over a lot more, and b) the composers and performers usually need a lot of rigorous training to produce quality work, so it's easier to be objective. In the pop scene (by which I mean everything not classical), a performer's personality may mean as much as his or her musical training...Tool aren't virtuosos, either. So it gets harder to make "objective" judgements. But it can still be done... Mike ps so I guess I agree, almost completely ------------------------------ Topic No. 33 Date: Tue, 15 Aug 1995 17:51:40 -0400 From: Michael Shurpik To: tool-list@visix.com Subject: radio play Message-ID: <199508152151.RAA10480@utrecht.lcs.mit.edu> taz: > do they get any radio airplay in the States, or elsewhere? Well, the short answer is yes, because that's how I discovered them. Last summer, this pretty cool radio station called Q-104.3 in New York was playing Intolerance and Prison Sex like, all the time (even more than Sober). At the end of the summer (after I bought the album) they started playing Bottom, and I was wondering if they were going to step straight through the first nine album tracks (no, they didn't). but otherwise, nah, you don't hear them much. Sure, since grunge = top 40 nowadays, there's a better chance, but it's still rare. It always amazed me that shit bands like Rollins and Rage got more airplay, but I guess it was for the better...might as well keep Tool for the people that can understand them. Mike ps Rollins and Rage is pretty cool to listen to, but come on, you have to admit that they're fairly talentless. ------------------------------ End of TOOL-LIST Digest 401 ***************************
