In my opinion it's just heavy techno crap. One of the main reasons why I like TooL is because it's real music and not coming out of a synthesiser, for this same reason i like bands like Live, Hendrix and Pearl Jam (Ten and Vs). What took me so long! Don't ask. Let's just say I've busy at work. The good news is I have *finally* finished. I'll post the rest this afternoon (Tattoos, and the make your own question) This post will have the Instruments people play, and everyone's first exposure to TooL. INSTRUMENTS (Conventional): Trumpet (2) Piano (7) Organ (2) Clarinet (3) Bass Guitar (9) Guitar (21) Drums (6) Synthesizer/Keyboards (2) Trombone (2) Flute Saxophone Cello Singing (5) - Not an instrument, but what the hell. Programming (i.e.. industrial music - didn't say what is used) INSTRUMENTS (Non-Conventional) Kazoo (2) "Skin Flute" (2) "Pink Oboe" "I can whistle real good." ************************************************ FIRST EXPOSURE TO TOOL: Friend (19) Saw a video (17) Heard on radio (11) Read a review (2) Friend recorded video of Sober (2) Husband's band played TooL song. Listening booth at a record store Sister played 4 Degrees Borrowed CD from work (didn't say which one) Bought CD after learning TooL was on second stage at Lollapalooza Saw TooL play live in LA clubs before popular Saw TooL live at Lollapalooza '93 Saw TooL live at Reptile House (Grand Rapids, Michigan) Saw TooL at Lowlands Festival, August '92 Heard TooL playing while in a record store Bought a promotional TooL package The following "exposure" stories are included for your enjoyment: "I read a review of Undertow, which was most praising, and went out to listen to the album. At first, I didn't like it very much, so I asked the cd-store attendant to put on the next cd (I had picked about ten c.d.'s to listen to). When I was through listening, I suddenly decided to ask him to put on Undertow again and listened some more. I still did not really like it but there was something in the music that bothered me, so I decided to buy it anyway. At home, I put it in my cd-player. It stayed there for two weeks at a stretch and I listened to it allmost full-time. "Since then, I've seen Tool three times: twice in Paradiso and once in The Melkweg. They were fab every single time. Yes, Maynard hunched all the time. "The most memorable thing about their gig at the Melkweg was that Maynard would not allow stage-diving: he would snarl at them. However, hardly anybody climbed the stage: somehow you could see that he did not want to be distracted from his music & singing." (courtesy of Karin Spaink) Heard that they were on second stage and saw the video about a month later. Maynard exposed his tool to me as I casually strolled down Hollywood Boulevard. Oh, the BAND! I'm one of the nerds that saw Sober and thought "Golly McGeezums, that's a mighty righteous band!" My old drummer started listening to Tool in mid '93. Then I went to Lallapallooza that summer and when I saw Tool play I really "Felt" their music and where they were coming from. That's when I really got into them. Friend played chorus of opiate, in .WAV format on his computer. then i proceded to borrow undertow and opiate the next week Took a tape out of a friend's bag at school, played it, loved it, found out the next day it was TOOL, who they had aready been raving about. heard "Sober" on DMX--like a digital "radio" you get from the cable company A friend recomended it so I bought the promo pack (with Undertow, sober Vid, and phallic sticker) having never heard them before. Best music choice I ever made. Completely smashed one night at a mates house. I put Undertow on cause I'd heard some good things about it. Then we played Super Mario Kart on the Super Nintendo. :) Read a review and thought "This must be the band for me". Then saw their "Sober" clip in Beavis & Butthead. borrowed the cd from work; they were described to me as "something grungy and such." my sister made me listen to swamp song over and over. Does a certain, small set of songs give you a powerful physiical reaction? Yes. Very small. What Do I Like Best about Tool? I relate to the music, it entrances me, awsome instrumental, realistic (Opiate talking about all the foolish people who are led to believe in a god) Why do I like Tool so much? Because they take a genre that's been beaten to death (angry young metal band) and turned it into something absolutely badass. RATM is a cool band, but Tool's originality just beats the hell out of them, let alone anything Henry Rollins has done either with Black Flag or his own group. Their views on religion also make me laugh. Opiate is one of my favorite songs to "whoops accidentally play" if there are any Chsitian Reich people in earshot. They've got style, they've got a singer with incredible vocal abilities, they have original guitar licks (try and find THAT these days), and you KNOW when you're hearing them, there's no doubt. The only other bands that compare with Tool are my lords and masters Pink Floyd, and the modern day Pink Floyd, Faith No More. Actually, it's a crapshoot between which I like better, FNM or Tool. FNM's got much more material out, something which Tool is being too sluggish about. Q. If the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles got in a fight, who do you think would win and why? A. This question is too incredible silly for me to even try to answer, but I had the nerve to ask it to some of the guys in a band called Billygoat when I interviewed them. Their answer included such phrases like, "What the hell are those Mighty Morphin things anyway? Is the government trying to send a message to kids that morphine is cool?" Then he went on about Nazis in the Lion King. Very interestin indeed... Question: If you could be present at one particular event in history, what would it be and why??? Answer: The Boston Tea Party Reason: I would have laughed at a hyprocrytical Government that now suppresses and looks down on rebellion, when the same Government was formed from a Group of People that made up one of the most quintessential rebellions in the history of mankind. Most memorable Tool experience? Hearing Prison Sex in a club and stomping all the jocks wearing Birkenstocks and Green Day shirts with my combat boots. Favorite beer: There is no beer except Fosters (and only in the big bad ass can). Favorite Tool Song? OPiate Least FAvorite Tool Song? Undertow Have any of you read any of the books on the suggested reading list that Maynard sent out with the lyrics? What? How was it? MY ANSWER... No my question would be : Whats your most amusing story about converting somebody to liking TOOL? Which favourite musicians of yours did you meet? Once, I interviewed Peter Steele of Type O Negative; coming september, I will perform on a music & word festival right before Blixa Bargeld's performance. So we'll meet in the dressing-room. That same evening, Shane McGowan will be there; Henry Rollins will be there evening before and the evening after Mark E. Smith and William Gibson will perform. My Ren and Stimpy card "the moneys mine...I'M THE CAT" (and my jennifer connelly wallpaper) Worst concert ever been to. Tool, at the "Alternative Nation" festival in Melbourne. It rained like never before, and we had nowhere to run to. All the bands were moved/called off, and we had to kill 6 hours in the rain. It had cost us AUS$60 to get in. Luckily, they had a free internet demonstration there, so we ran up their tab to the tune of about 30 gadzillion dollars. After 6 goddamn hours, Tool came out, MJK said "I can't beleive you waited in the rain for us fuckers," then they ROCKED. That bit was good. Then I had to sit through the Violent fucking Femmes, Lou Reed, and other nonentities (including "Ice motherfuckin' T") until Primus played. All in all, a really shit day. Cept tool were good! How much beer can you put away in a night? About 15 Stubbies. (Carlton Cold 5.2% alc/vol) Hmmmmmmmm Beer. So what kind of music will you listen to when you're 40? Everybody says "uhhmmm, I'm into music, sport, travel, you know, usual stuff." Only few say "well, I have a hobby. I kill cats just for kicks". Why do I like Tool? would be a tough question....* So let me write down a memory instead..., in Paradiso, Amsterdam, I was with a friend. She was extremely tired, but I sort of forced her to come with me to the front near the stage. It lasted hours before the band finaly arrived. They looked like they had enjoyed one of Amsterdams pleasures, not sex, and the first 2 songs sounded terrible, so I did not clap. The show got better, and my friend got sicker. It was the 2nd time she saw Maynard, and she tried not to be scared of him this time. It was my 3d time, so I already was used to his looks and behaviour on stage. It was very hot, we were very tired, and the crowd was very wild. I almost broke my neck when a boy behind me jumped down and took my hair with him, while I just wanted to jump up. The show got better and better, so I didnt see my friend was almost fainting. Maynard did, and he threw his glas of water, or whatever it was, right into her face. He did not smile, but when I looked into his eyes, they smiled,... and we could never be afraid of him again... This was so nice... My friend found out later she had bruised a rib in the crowd.... She could not move for 3 weeks. * my answer: it's loud, and still the singer can really sing ;) His voice can make you fall in love with him, without seeing him. I like the music a lot, but without the strange lyrics and the strenght of his voice it wouldn't be Tool. It is also music that I can hear time after time and still like, or love. Something interesting about me? I guess everyone should know that I am a vegetarian -- who's the president of the kabir fan club, anyway? right. see. if i told you, then you'd kill him, and i'd have to take over some responsibility. i don't like responsibility. that involves being responsible. wait, i maintain the tool faq, don't i? oh. well, never mind. i meant to have a good answer. i fucked up. sorry. :) What is your favorite film? Q: At what point did you realize you were seriosly addicted to TooL? A: It was at my first (and only) Tool concert. It was in Jacksonville, FL (my home town) and was the same concert that is listed on the home page under "a near riot". 34 years old, my first time in the pit, and I never left . Everyone was so charged, you could feel it in the air and cut it with a knife. At one point during "Prison Sex" maynards mic went out as he was going into "I Have found some kind of temporary insanity....." he has so much volume to his voice, I could hear him over the rest of the band, without a mic. Impressive. It was the best time of my life. Which famous person would you like to publicly execute and why? Also would you be able to justify it in a court of law ? Who is your favorite author? What concert would you be most embarrassed to admit you went to? A. Vanilla Ice. I was young(er) and my uncle worked for SBK records. He got me, himself, my brother, a friend for each of us, my parents, and two reporters tickets. After the show, we got to go back stage and meet him. He didn't talk and left quickly after signing autographs and a few pictures. Why is yourpalKabir, my pal? Beats the fuck out of me.
