A Review of the Fall 1996 Tour

Date: November 22

From: Peter Jastreboff (clapton@flatiron.org) This is a review for the TooL show in NYC at Roseland on November 22nd. Roseland is perhaps the coolest venue ever for seeing a show - all GA, like $20, very cool crowd all the time, and although the beer prices are ridiculous, they are real easy on carding people. So Psychotica is the opening band at this stop, and they come out on stage a little after eight, lead singer dressed in a white vinyl one-piece suit. Well, form this point until about 8:40, life was pretty shitty. They are perhaps one of the WORST bands I have ever seen play live. God they suck. They only redeeming factor was when the lead singer actually sang, instead of screaming (they had this chick whose only real function was to look fucked up and scream), you could tell he had a well-trained voice. Too bad he didn't use it. So then there's about a half hour break for the changeover. About ten after nine they cut out the canned music and put on these subharmonics which just started shking everything in the house, including my liver. My jeans were vibrating off my legs. It was the COOLEST thing. ABout three or four minutes later, Danny, Justin, Adam, and Marnard walk onto the stage and begin right away with Third Eye. Totally rockin job - the base and drums were sick! The rest of the set went like this: Stinkfist 46 & 2 Undertow Eulogy Prison Sex - added fourth verse, didn't recognize the lyrics at all Jimmy Cold and Ugly H Sober Opiate Aenima The concet was definitely one of the best I have ever been to. I saw TooL at Roseland once before in '93, that show was fuckin' incredible, this show just kicked the shit out of the first. They are such a tight band, Maynard's voice was so smooth, even at the end of the show. They played for about an hour and half. Solid rock. Get out and see 'em.
