A Review of the Fall 1996 Tour

Date: November 22

From: Obidicut (jimmorey@eden.rutgers.edu) Subject: tool show at the roseland, nyc, on fri., nov. 22 kabir, excellent job on the tool page. keep up the good work. on to the review: well, the show included all of the same shit everybody else felt the need to repeat endlessly(blue&white maynard, projection screens, etc.) what i found to be most fascinating at this, my first of hopefully many tool shows, was the performance of the band and maynard's on-stage presense. as far as performance, the guys were a dead on match to their recorded sound, which is excellent. but what really mezmerized me was maynard's intensity. in a day & age when music seems to be more about gimic and less about talent and true emotion i feel tool truly have few, if any, peers. maynard sang each song as if it were the first time, so inspired did he seem. he threw in some interesting little surprises. an extra verse to prison sex, set to music similar to that of jimmy, was added to the performance. l.a. and arizona bay in aenema were changed to n.y. and i believe philadelphia(or possibly pennsylvania) bay, which i thought was kind of cute. other than that the set was pretty much as described in previous reviews, mostly new stuff, with a mixture of songs from the first two albums. the crowd sucked. too many under-sexed, macho dickhead frat-boys banging into each other. despite this i felt as if maynard was singing directly to me, as he gazed out over the crowd in between his methodical dances, seemingly making eye contact with each member of the crowd in turn. overall, it was an excellent show, and i urge all who have the chance to go see them play. oh yeah, psychotica sucks. jim (jimmorey@eden.rutgers.edu)
