A Review of the Fall 1996 Tour

Date: December 3

From: "Pat Marth" (replica@wam.umd.edu) Subject: Concert Review - December 3 December 3- Tonight's da night! TOOL! After arriving at the Capitol Ballroom/Warehouse in lovely Southeast DC, me and my roommate were psyched! Many many TOOL freaks congregating outside. This show was major league SOLD OUT! People were offering $50 for a ticket. If I didn't wanna see TOOL that bad, I coulda made some serious cash. After getting my Marlboro's checked for pot at security, we entered into the first of about a million rooms before the main concert room. When we got in there, we got as far towards the front as we could. Not very far, but good enough. Anyway, on to the show. To anybody who's got a show listing Psychotica as the opener, I would definitely recommend arriving late. Psychotica fuckin sucked a big hairy one. The lead singer looked like a cross between a Mighty Morphine Power Ranger and anyone from Motley Crue. About the only cool thing about them was the electric cello. People started throwing shit at the band. The lead thing then proceeded to make fun of the size of the thrower's genitalia. Pretty juvenile. Anyway, they played a mercifully short and unspectacular set. LADIES AND GENTLEMAN! ARE WE READY TO RUMBLE!? The lights dimmed and the video screens appeared. It's time for TOOL! They opened with the entire "Third Eye". Maynard was naked. Just kidding. He had shorts on. That's it. He was painted half blue, half white. Cool. Then they broke into "Stinkfist". The place erupted into a giant mosh pit. Nobody was spared. After it was over, about 100-150 chants of "Chickenweasel!" came up. Those not enlightened were standin around like "Huh?" One thing I have to say about this concert: TIGHT! TOOL was so together and Maynard definitely gives his all. One of my favorite hilights: Maynard: This is our last song. Crowd: No!!! (groan) Maynard: This is our last song... Crowd: No!!! (more groans) Maynard: off our first album. hehe. That was pretty funny. He introduced "Pushit" like this: "Have you ever been in a relationship where you loved this person so much, but it was so horribly wrong? Then you had to kill 'em. Me neither." The rest is a blur. This is the rest of what they played from what I can remember, but definitely not in order: Eulogy Forty Six & 2 Aenema Opiate Prison Sex Sober (with a really cool drum intro) Undertow That's what I can remember. Definitely one of the best out of the many shows I've been to this year. The only thing I didn'y like was that they didn't play "Hooker With a Penis" :( I only really started listening to TOOL with this last album. Never has a band made such a quick and immediate impression on me. If they come back around DC in the spring (hopefully hopefully), you bet your ass I'll be there. My neck hurts, and I have no voice. This constitutes an awesome concert, and I recommend to everyone! Take it easy! (but not TOO easy) Pat
