A Review of the Fall 1996 Tour

Date: December 3

From: "Gary M. Gettier" (gmg@mtolympus.ari.net) Tool December 3, 1996 Capital Ballroom Washington D.C. The Tool show was nothing short of awesome. Here's the setlist in somewhat order: Third Eye Stinkfist Undertow Forty Six & 2 Eulogy Prison Sex Pushit Long instrumental, lots of drums (parts of H. thrown in?) Sober Opiate Aenema The sound was superb! At too many concerts, the sound is way too loud. Tool's sound was great - not too loud, and I could actually hear what Maynard was singing. The band was all business, no posing, no BS, just great music. Maynard spoke a few times, and was doing his thing to various songs, but Adam and Justin kind of just stood there and played. Others may not, but I really appreciate this. They didn't feel it necessary to draw attention to themselves, and let the music speak for them. The video images they had on two screens behind them were a nice touch. Maynard had the right side of his body, bald head and all, painted blue. Just about everything went right with this show. The opening act actually started on time, and Tool was done by 11:00 in time for fans to make the metro, though I didn't take it this time. The crowd was very cool, and really got into it. Small complaints: The show was sold out - cool. The opening act was not delayed to sell more liquor - cool. But, too many tickets were sold. There were so many people, they could not all fit in the rectangular area in front of the stage. Many were around to the side and probably had trouble seeing the entire stage. I was about one third of the way back from the stage. I could have done without one of the 2 long songs, "Pushit" and "Third Eye". In the time it took to play one of those songs, they could have played "Hush", "Cold and Ugly", "Part Of Me" and "Jerk-off" (which everyone was yelling for). But what a great show. I'll surely check them out on the spring tour. Hopefully, they'll play Baltimore this time around. Gary ------------------------------+---------------------------------------- Gary M.
