A Review of the Fall 1996 Tour

Date: December 6

X-Sender: bvanderv@mail.vt.edu From: GIMP (gimp@vt.edu) Subject: Review - Charlotte Dec 6 The Grady Cole center - what a dump. I wish it upon that place to never have a show ever again. The video screens were not used, but a white backdrop was where all the images were cast, of course of low quality, and littered with crowd shadows. It was also fun having uniformed cops in the crowd during the show to make sure you did not light a cigarette. I wish the cops had hauled off the 300 lb. nazi thugs that could certainly have found a better way to 'vent' than banging around the place like we all owe them some sort of respect for their shiny heads and thick necks. At any rate, the music was tight and clear. Setlist was same as you've all been seeing. Adam seemed surprisingly, i dunno - 'fresh'? during this show. he actually was looking up and at the crowd smiling a lot of the show. during the 'sober' intro adam went at it with an electric razor on his guitar, providing some interesting sound. Maynard spoke quite a bit, as a few tech problems left moments to advertise that a guitar tech had only one testicle, and that Justin was from (a few found the humor) a small french province in Iceland, and was second cousin to Bjork. There is no doubt Maynard is back to 100% - he really went at it, sweating enough to lose most all of the paint on his body. This was the second time this tour I saw TooL, and hope a spring tour brings them back around the mid-atlantic, hopefully a little closer to Blacksburg, Va. the GIMP gimp@vt.edu
