A Review of the Fall 1996 Tour

Date: December 7

From: Jode8u@aol.com Atlanta- December 7th, 1996 In the most recent Rolling Stone article Danny compared Tool's music to childbirth, being brutal yet beautiful. The December 7th show at the International Ballroom seemed simply an extension of that...the atmosphere brutal, the band beautiful. I have never felt so connected to a live experience...it was amazing. The Ballroom had a warehouse/hangar type feel to it. It was very dark, lights only emanating from the stage. The masses of people "pushin an shovin me" combined by the heat, smoke, and my own anticipation made for a very intense environment. A very interesting/odd performance from Psychotica opened the show, then the Tool...Seeing those guys in person was so incredible...I mean I hear them everyday, to see them...leaves me speechless. Set list, Maynard's comments made before songs (that I remember) in quotation marks: 1. Third Eye "At-lan-ta" 2. Stinkfist 3. Forty-six and 2 "This is...another song" 4. Swamp Song 5. Eulogy "This is about all of us realizing our own connection to each other..." 6. Hooker with a penis 7. Prison Sex (Different last verse, something about the serpent, father, my terror...it was insightful) "Sometimes when you see a cartoon character who is faced with a decision, you see a little angel on one shoulder, and a little devil on the other. The devil trying to get you to do the bad thing, the angel trying to do the right thing. Well, unfortunately in life it isn't that simple, they seem to represent intentions for us, and we must decide who has the best intention...and that can be difficult to do This is a song about that. It's called H." 8. H. "This song is about someone loving you so much that they wanna kill you...so you have to kill them" 9. Pushit (musical interlude) 10. Sober "This is the last song...off our fist album. A lot of people think this song is anti-religion or something, well that's not really the case. Sometimes we have moments of clarity...this is about those moments...this song is about those business men" 11. Opiate "Well I suppose we will play one more, even though you don't deserve it. This is a more modern version of Carl Young's psychology...it is about unity" 12. nema There was also a Maynard comment regarding one of the guitar Tech's lack of a testicle...and taking up testicle donations in a drop box in the back...it was amusing. The film in the background, and Maynard's appearance/movement added greatly to the experience. They are so tight, so damn good. I am really too obsessed for my own good. It was a life highlight, and should not be missed. Jody
