A Review of the Fall 1996 Tour

Date: December 15

From: Jason Kraft (porpus@iamerica.net) Subject: Tulsa show Dec. 15 DON'T THINK THIS REVIEW IS LONG AND BORING, BECAUSE OF THE TEXT. IF YOU NEED TO, READ THE END......The Tulsa show was actually Dec. 15, not Dec. 16. I pretty much planned on not going to the show due to it being on a Monday and having finals that night also. Brady Theatre was a small, tight place. I spent the night in the pit region, while friends of mine were up in the balcony. They may have a different outlook on the show. I have no clue who opened for Tool, because we had arrived when the opening act quit playing. To cut the crap, Tool came out looking pretty smooth. Maynard was painted along with Justin and Adam. The set list was basically the same as all other shows: Start with Third Eye, End with Aenima. They did not play Hooker or H., so the set list was 11 songs. The crowd in the pit was mashed together in the beginning, and when Third Eye kicked in, shit hit the fan. I felt sorry for those few that fell and got ran over, but that happens. Alot of people have complained that Third Eye is not the song to open up with...... bullshit! Third eye kicked major ass. After the first song alot people cleared from the stage level, pit area. So, breathing was easier. The new add-on to Stinkfist was killer. The only reason I knew it was coming up in the song was from these reviews, and it took alot of people by surprise at the show. Jimmy sounded perfect. Justin was playing Opiate bad ass, his facial expressions were wicked. ANYONE WHO WENT TO THE TULSA SHOW FEEL FREE TO E-MAIL ME WITH ANY COMMENTS. Maynard made some good comments here and there and his voice was sounding in tune. He actually got hit by some little object on his forehead, and didn't do one thing about it. Ignored it. There was a rumor that someone jumped into the crowd from the balcony and I hope that someone got the crap kicked out of them. Danny played drums pretty accurate to the albums and it sounded tight. TIGHT THEATRES,TIGHT MUSIC... Overall Third Eye and probably 46&2 and Push it were the best. The effect Adam was using on his guitar was a screeching banshee-type wail at times. It was loud as hell when he hit the high notes. I'm still hearing it 10 hours later. The band did most of the stuff that people commented on in previous reviews. Yet, every song sounded great. Two final comments to make about the Tulsa show: 1. There was some huge guy regulating the pit. 400 pounds maybe. He stomped through there and made things happen. He was into the show big time. Little dudes bounced off him like bugs on a windshield. 2. Security? What is it with for-hire security people? I actually had a back-stage pass for after the show. It was legit. It was a circular, patch sticker that was given to me at will-call. Remember, there was four of us and one back-stage pass so getting back there was not a big deal to me. Even if I wanted to, security wouldn't let me past the door. None knew what the passes looked like so how could they tell me it was fake. Assholes! Ofcourse the roadies are going to have different passes, you idiots. Mine was just a simple, real civilian pass. It would have been nice seeing the band and eating free food, but there was four of us and the security people were deaf and dumb. (though as a disclaimer, a few security guys saved some people's butts who were too close to the railing and getting squashed) Thank you, porpus@iamerica.net PS: Thanks to Henry Akins and Steve Bryan for hooking us up! (spelling?) Also, for all of you Opiate(album) frowners, Cold & Ugly last night proved that their first album is the basic building block for any true Tool fan's foundation of music.
