A Review of the Spring 1997 Tour

Date: February 27

From: Sweetdrems@aol.com Subject: my review of tool at asbury park, nj feb 27th, 1997 Well what can I say? Except another awesome show from the worlds greatest band! This was my 4th time to see them and each time it gets better and better! Where do I start? The opening acts were really lame! First was some band that I never heard of and I dont think anyone else who was there heard of either. Then came the Melvins. They are the biggest bunch of no talent losers I have ever seen. They prove my point that as long as you call yourselves alternative some stupid record label will sign you and sell your disc. Im not sure if our friends have any say in who opens for them but if they do, can them and find someone else quick!!!! I arrived shortly after the doors opened at 7pm. The convention hall in asbury park is right on the ocean, and it looks as if many years of salt water has taken its toll on this place. The crowd was as interesting blend of people, mostly 20 somethings who looked like they went to college or have some productive roll in society. HOWEVER!!! There were 8-10 "people" who Im not sure I can even call them human. They looked like they just broke out of jail for asaulting nuns or something. While the melivins were "playing" they proceeded to try and hurt anyone who either came close to them or anyone who tried to enter the pit. I was about 3 feet away when i saw one of these creatures just intentionally step back and totally whale this kid in the face!!! These guys were the biggest bunch of fucking ass holes you ever did see. Anyway on to the show. The lights went down and on came the 2 video screens with the cover of NIMA. The crowd was going crazy and then out came MJK in his customary purple (or blue not sure) body make up with reflective stickers palced on his head and torso. From where I was which was about half way between the stage and the sound board I could see everything. As I write this I am getting pictures developed from the show and Ill forward them if they turn out good! anyway the show was great. The sound was exceptional as always! and the visuals on the 2 screens really added a nice touch to each song. A couple of comical things MJK did was: 1. before Prison Sex he asked if anyone in the crowd was from the boys military academy in NJ. He then said "if you are then please leave cause youre not allowed to be here" and before AENEMA the last song they played he commented on how scary asbury park is and that ours cars are probally all broken into. Then he had a riddle. He asked whats this" making the grunting sound twice before Aenema?" His answer was "2 pants" get it? anyway all in all the show was incredible as i thought it would be. I hope to see them one more time before the tour is over. Here is the setlist from what I can remember: (may not be in the correct order but you get the idea at least) Third eye, stinkfist, 46&2, eulogy, H, sober, prison sex, intolerance, opiate, and last aenema.
