Spring 1997 Tour Reviews

Date: April 2

From: Fithguy (digitaln@tpnet.co.nz) Subject: Tour Review of April 2nd Christchurch tool concert. To Kabir And Other Tool Fans. After managing to get a ticket and accommodation only one week before the concert I was flaming happy. To get there i had to travel 420 km (about 260 miles) from Nelson to Christchurch. The doors opened at about seven o'clock and the opening band propeller started at 8 o'clock. They wern't very good, they were sort of heavy which lightened up the crowd a bit. They ended there set with the bass player saying to the crowd "who's on next? who's on next?". After a short half hour of setting up with the tension building the four walked out and got a very loud welcome from the crowd. In this small town hall there would have been about 3000 to 5000 people. Maynard had a pair of boxer shorts on and was painted fully in blue with red dots up the middle of his chest, on his arms, and several on the top of his head. Justin came out in a pair of black or blue pants and he was painted red. Adam had a pair of red pants on and was painted up purple. Danny came on in a pair of shorts and a shirt but after the first song took it off. Third Eye came first and was damn brilliant although at the start i could hardly hear Maynards voice but it became a lot clearer later on. The end of third eye was shortened to only four lots of "prying open my third eye". Next followed Stinkfist with maynard holding the note of the line of "if I really dont feal a thing at allllllllllllllllllll" then the band cutting in with the new slow and damn awesome jam before finishing the song normally. After this maynard said "This is our first time in New Zealand" followed by a big cheer from the crowd, And then they started up 46 and 2. After this song maynard said "where going to try something here. I want you to go one two three yeesssssss (maynard is grabbing his croch while saying yes) okay now ONE TWO THREE YEESSSSSSSSSSS". Straight after adam comes in with his guitar opening for Prison Sex, the new verse was awesome and like the new bit in Stinkfist the crowd didnt have a clue what to do. Next the band all geared up for the next song with maynard talking through his super raygun Hairdryer thingeemebob and what turned out to be an awesome version of eulogy (loved the extended ending). "This song is about choices" Maynard said. Myself expecting to hear opiate I instead find myself listening to H. The "I dont mind" bit was good because Maynard said it about 5 or 6 times with the rest of the band stopping until the last one where maynard yelled it really well. Now came a lot of funny glass shattering noises which was followed by Pushit. The crowd was pushing and shoving each other around pretty appropriate for the song. Best part of the whole show was 8 and a half minutes through this song (you know the bit im talking about). Then came the long whiny terrific musical exprience with Dannys drumming the highlight followed about 10 minutes later with sober. After the "trust me trust me trust me trust me trust me trust me" bit someone made it up on stage with a security guard chasing him. He got away and stage dived into the crowd. Next Maynard said "This is our last song...(boo oohhh from the crowd)... off our first album" followed by cheers from the crowd. Then came his usual speech, but i missed a bit it went a bit like this "The church a few years back said fucking is a sin and is bad for you. But outside just before the show i saw a lot of people smoking, And smoking can kill you. So im thinking well hey if im going to die im going to die fucking". This was followed by a big cheer from the crowd, then followed by Opiate. At the first "let me lay my holy hand a hand apon you" Maynard is once again grabbing at his croch. Tool then all put down their instruments and gathered round Dannys drum kit. After a few seconds Maynard said "we'll play one more" (more cheers). Maynard then said "Did you hear about those guys who missed there comet. I think it was a bit stupid because comets are a bit like buses, if you miss the first one the'll always be another coming along..... this song is sort of about comets. Hey Hey Hey Hey....." They finished this song (with someone else climbing down from the balcony running on stage and doing a little dance then jumping into the crowd) and then left with Maynard throwing his drinkbottle into the crowd and Danny throwing his 4 drumsticks into the crowd waving with a smile on his face and then walking off stage. Overall Maynard danced in his wacky spacey yet hugely entertaining style. Danny's spectacular drumming through all the songs. What can i say! Justin's quiet yet excellent bass playing was great. And Adam. Probably the quietest member of the band, but he makes the loudest noises of all of the band. His playing is absolutely brilliant hitting everything perfectly But I didn't see his face the whole show. His long hair falls down over his face to hide himself. He also doesn't move much while playing. I Suppose this adds to the mystery and excellence of his guitar playing. The only thing missing i thought was jimmy or perhaps another undertow (4 or Crawl Away or Bottom). Playlist again... 1. Third Eye 2. Stinkfist 3. 46 And 2 4. Prison Sex 5. Eulogy 6. H 7. Pushit 8. Jam Session plus Sober 9. Opiate 10. nema Myself describing this show would be Fuc**ng (followed by about 15 more swear words) CHOICE!!!!!!!! See YA FITHGUY

From: Rich (billyc@es.co.nz) Subject: Tool: Christchurch, New Zealand concert review (long) "I wanna be a rock star", is what I would be saying if I could talk right now. Thinking back on the 19 years I've spent on this planet, I can't think of many better things than what I just saw, sex was gonna make it on the list, but now I think about what Maynard said, I think I've changed my mind. I'll give anyone a tip who is going to a concert in the next few weeks in NZ or Australia, GO EARLY. We got there about 2 hours early and were virtually the first ones in. Front of the mosh pit was awesome, an I'm wondering on what I missed out on not making it there for the Smashing Pumpkins when they were here. Oh well, the tip continues, take a cushion, pillow or something that's gonna prevent you from getting the air sucked out of your being by getting the combined weight of 2000 people behind you. And also, everyone want's to be at the front, make sure if you get there, go with some friends who can help you hang on, I just about got the shit kicked out of me by people wanting to be in that desired spot, leaning on the barrier, between Adam and Maynard. After Propellor ( who were on for about 30 mins and weren't toooo bad ) Tool finally comes out at 9pm, after the doors opened at 6.50pm. Maynard is all blue, with red dots all over him, and in this shape below on his head and only wearing tool boxers... back * * * * * * * * eyes try and understand that, I've got to say now that he is a great performer, it's like he's dropped a tab before he started, does so many funny/weird things. When they came out, he just stood motionless for like 3 mins, until he had his first line. Danny was wearing a Soundgarden T-shirt for a bit (until he took it off). Adam was wearing black pants and had his body painted completely blue also. And Justin... wow classic (not that I actually watched him that much) but he was red all over, with his hais all shaved off except for 2 little bits at the front which were shaped like horns, going with his blue eyes he looked awesome. I definetly had Danny look at me, after I did the peace sign to him, he did it back for 1 second, Adam was looking at me all the time, cause I was watching the awesome guitar work he was doing/playing/creating . And Maynard looked at everybody, which is quite normal I suppose, as he has no instrument to concentrate on. Adam and Justin didn't look too happy, but that may have been cause they were concentrating on their instruments the whole performance. But Danny was awesome, great entertainer, always looking enthusiastic, and I was about 5 cm (2 inch :) ) away from catching one of his drumsticks when he threw it as they walked off, That will be something I tell my grandchildren about :) . I want to kill the bastard who threw his shoe on stage, which hit one of the cymballs, I turned around and screamed out fuck you with the appropriate finger signals, what makes someone do that? I hope that doesn't discourage them from future shows, as well as the 2 fuckers who jumped off the balcony, onto the stage, then into the crowd, although the band didn't look too pissed. Oh yeah, this is prob. Concert standard anyway, look out for crowd surfers, esp. when the show is almost over, I ended up dumping a guy on his head cause I got hit by soo many of them passing over me on their way to "victory".... Playlist for those who are only reading this for that reason: Third Eye Stinkfist 46 and 2 Prison Sex Eulogy H Pushit Sober Opiate nema Points of notice : * Long Jam in the middle bit of Stinkfist, before .. I'll keep digging...... * Change of order for the fuck..... fuck that bit of nema first Fuck retro anything....... then Fuck L. Ron Hubbard lastly Fuck Smiley glad hands * extra stanza(right word?) in Prison Sex that noone could sing along with * before opiate, this the last song..... .. off our first album... * then, (I can't remember all this, but here is a small part I can remember): (actually, none of this is remembered word for word, just kinda made up by me from what I heard) ...this song is about Sex...you know people are so afraid to fuck these days....I see all these people smoking cigarettes outside afraid they're gonna die from fucking, afraid of touching each other..... cigarettes are more likely to kill you.... (something like that?) * after opiate: get in huddle [crowd: more/encore etc].... after 2 mins, ok, 1 more then before nema: Did you hear about all those idiots who killed themselves just because they missed a comet , comets are like vultures right, if you miss them once, you're bound to see them again, cause they will always come back.... this song has a little message about this (something like that) * Maynard: This out first time to New Zealand..... cheers I want you to do something, reach way down, way, way down (grabs nuts) and I want you to yell out Yes..... obvious what happens next * Huge 10+ min jam after Pushit, leading into Sober, Maynard was wandering round really low to the floor with something that looked like a huge marker, and something that looked like a sieve (sp???) he was drawing something and he was smiling a bit, but I was too low to see it, I'll see if I can find out from someone who was up the top and can tell me what he was doing. * Also, that Voice Changer thingy that he uses for Eulogy, I WANT ONE!! it is so incredible how much they can reproduce the sounds from the CD live. I heard people on this list say it, but it's incredible live We got some good photos (or at least taken from a good place, not developed yet), So I'll put them on my page when they get done, address coming soon... Also, we exited to the Simpsons theme music, god knows why? The End :) Rich P.S. NZ'ers..... propellor is ok, at least you don't get too sweaty before Tool comes out. Aussies, Scott, Jonesy etc... Shihad are awesome, enjoy... support them too, they may be big someday, and La La Land, and A day away are real cool songs Oh yeah, short sleeve T's = $NZ 40, long sleeve $NZ 50

From: Lunatic (lunatic@es.co.nz) Subject: Review : Tool in Christchurch, NZ, April 2 I've just got home from the show, it's 4:45 am, and I'm still hearing the concert ringing in my ears :) I had to travel 400km (each way), and I'd do it again in an instant. This was the first time I've seen them live, but it won't be the last (provided they come back to NZ, of course). They were awesome. The setlist was the same as the March 16 San Diego gig: (-)ions Third Eye Stinkfist Forty Six & 2 Prison Sex Eulogy H. PuShit Drum solo/Intro Sober Opiate nema except they didn't play 4 Degrees. The band were dressed/painted the same too. After Stinkfist, Maynard said 'This is out first time in New Zealand' and the crowd cheered so loud he couldn't continue :) so they launched into 46 and 2 instead. After Sober, he said 'This is the last song', and the whole crowd started booing, until he added 'off our first album', and the noise changed to raucos cheering. He did the anti-catholic/anti-smoking/pro-fucking speech before Opiate, and made a few comments about the Hale-Bopp comet/mass suicide thing before Aenima, but otherwise was pretty quiet between songs. His movement to the music was highly entertaining, I'm guessing he must've been the inspiration for the models in the Sober video :) He looked like a demented puppet. The opening band didn't introduce themselves, and weren't obviously billed anywhere, so I don't know who they were, but they were ok. The levels were pretty crap though, the lyrics were completely drowned out by everything else. Thankfully Tool didn't suffer from this problem. Everything about the music was perfect, nothing out of place anywhere. I'm sure they played Prison Sex slower than it is on the album though. The crowd downstairs was energetic the entire night, I was in the gallery, as I'm a chronic asthmatic, 5 minutes down there would've killed me :) Security didn't seem terribly impressed with the crowd surfers though, and I saw more than a few people being shown to the door after getting pushed to the front. One particular moron decided to climb the gallery railing, onto one of the speaker stacks, and leap the 20+ feet to the seething crowd below. They moved. The floor didn't. Said moron was apparently taken away in an ambulance. None of this bothered the band at all, they just kept playing away as if nothing had happened :) The energy coming off the band and the crowd was unbelievable, despite most of the ppl in the gallery remaining seated, you could tell they were entranced by the music, and Maynards convulsions. Highlights for me would have to be Prison Sex, and Aenima, you could feel the entire place getting into those two songs. I would have liked to have heard more from Opiate/Undertow, or Hooker with a Penis, but you take what you can get :) Definitely an awesome show, as one of my friends remarked, it's a shame it's not like a movie, where you can go and see it every night if you want to.
