This was this reviewer's 1st Tool show

Tonights show was well done. Tomahawk opened semi- strong, but didn't sound as good as they should have throughout.(to bad, their cd isn't too bad) The sound quality wasn't very good for them. Tool was another story. They played, sounded, and looked amazing. Maynard wore a black leather suit and had black paint on his face. There was even what seemed to be a crazed fan who ran on stage and started dancing before people removed him. The setlist is simliar to all the other shows so I'm not gonna post it. Great show, worth going too.

This was this reviewer's 1st Tool show

Setlist (as far as I can remember): Sober The Grudge Stinkfist Forty Six & 2 Schism Parabol Parabola Aenema ----------- Intermission ----------- Disposition Reflection Triad <---the highlight of the show for me Lateralus My first Tool show and it was everything I expected and more. Tomahawk came on with a deer statue on stage. I think the singer (or maybe even Maynard...I'm not sure) said something to the effect of "Are there any does in the audience who want to come back stage? We're having a stag party." It was funny but unfortunately Tomahawk's set wasn't as entertaining. Adam joined them for one song. The Richmond crowd was kind to Tomahawk, even though not to many people were into them. Tool came out and tore the Coliseum a new asshole. Maynard said hello a little into the set. He commented "Richmond? You guys sound more like Huntington, West Virginia." This was followed by a chorus of boos. Then Maynard said, "You sure this is Richmond?" The crowd cheered and Maynard said, "Sounds good to me." Since Richmond really isn't a concert mecca, I was expecting Tool to just come here and play the radio hits. They did but it was still the fucking greatest concert experience I've seen in this city. Just before Lateralus, Maynard said thanks and he hoped that the band has "inspired or healed" the fans. I was pleased to see the four of them come together at the end and embrace on the stage. They were up there for a good 2 or 3 minutes thanking the fans and throwing drum sticks, etc to the crowd. Thanks Tool!

Amazing Show . My first tool show . I was completely blown away . Tomahawk wasnt very good , but patton has a good voice ....Maybe just not my kinda music. . but Triad was amazing as well when john from tomahawk came out on some percussion aiding daney . A fan somehow got on stage and danced around like a crazy man until he was grabbed off stage . The arena was pretty packed , almost sold out , which is strange considering the shithole we live in . Nothing but "Hip-gangster wannabees" . Schism was amazing as well as sober . I pray the guys come back . Best 35 bucks I ever spent . Sober The Grudge Stinkfist H. Schism Parabol Parabola Aenima Intermission Disposition Reflection Triad Lateralus I may have missed one or two Go see Tool!!!!

Am i the only one who kinda liked Tomahawk ?It was liek rolands band mixed with radiohead. Although when ever they stoped they got bumbarded wtih "wares manyard" and "you fuckin suck" etv. O well, TOOL... my first time seeing them im addicted now. I was rite up front and got the deafening sound of Justin on bass. Adam din't seem to enthused up there he kept a zoned out look most of the show. My favorite "song" was deffently te drum solo with Tomahawk 's drumma helpin, then they all just kicked in. I was expecting a costume change from Manyard but never got it. I can't complain. The video screens are just mind blowing to say the leaste, specially during intermission. I would HATE to be at that show stoned. Being that my ears are still ringing im going to bed. Goodnight, I hope to see you all at the next show.

This was this reviewer's 3rd Tool show

Setlist: Sober The Grudge Stinkfist (interlude fooled many singing along with Maynard) 46&2 (not H. as someone else posted) Schism Parabol (all of it) Parabola (best song of the night) Aenema (Incredible) Intermission Disposition Reflection Triad (absolutely amazing) Lateralus I drove about 4 hours in Friday afternoon rush hour traffic from Washington DC to see this concert. It was worth it. Getting in was annoying as my girlfriend was not allowed to even bring a small purse in with her. So, we had to walk about half a mile back to the car. Security claimed it was at the bands request, which I find hard to believe. I doubt that Tomohawk or Tool are worried about getting pelted with Tampons. Security seemed overly aggressive all night, but they did manage to arrest someone who tried to bull rush onto the floor right before Tool came on. Away he went in handcuffs, as the audience applauded. During Lateralus a fan appeared on the stage out of nowhere. He seemed more amazed that he made it past security than anything. He danced in the center of the stage between Justin and Adam and turned to get a semi-wave from Maynard before he was "escorted" off by stage hands. This didn't seem to phase the band until Adam had some feedback problems right after the drunkard was taken off stage. Not sure that was due to the drunk idiot on stage. Anyway, it was otherwise a great night. Tool amazing as always. See you tomorrow in Baltimore!

This was this reviewer's 9th Tool show

Great show but shorter then most . Once again tool was amaazing and the end of traid was one of those "toolgasims" moments. I can not be sure though i am going tommorow night in B-more, but i think Maynard was play a "bass guitar" on triad not his normal "guitar". Adam did not seem to be in a good mood tonight though he played great. Justin flops the hair in the face and blows every other bass player out of the water. I just can never say enough about how good he is and how much better Tool is with him instead of Paul. Before you give me any crap,i have seen the band with both players and Justin is just so much better in every way for Tool. What needs to be said about Danny, nobody drumming today can come close. He is that good and he makes it look so easy. I could just watch him for hours. Then comes Maynard, less uptight this tour, then the fall tour. The sound was mud till about 5 songs in and Maynards vocals never get enough high end and suffered from high mid mud and clip through the whole set. He never cut through enough to realy have presence in the mix but then again what do you want in an areana. Tomahawk suffered from bad sound throughout there set. John Stanier (ex-helmet) has always been a crack hard hitting drummer. His kick drums where never in the mix and his snare was muted. But durning the softer parts some tasty work came through. Guitars where almost never load enough. Bass did come in somewhat but all way overpowered by the vocals. Having said that ,love Fantomas and love Tomahawk. Mike Patton is the man and i admire the way he is trying to streach the limits of rock music in to the edges. It might not always work or be pretty but it is challanging and my hats are off to him and his partners in crime for trying something that is not safe and not always recived well by the close-minded people in the crowd who are there to just rockout and have a brew. Give-Um hell Mike I will be there to watch. There may be only 20 people there that get it, but we are loving it. Come on they did a cover of Roxy Music's Editions of You, So twisted. It was not that long ago I saw another band who did not get a great reaction from a crowd because they where to strange and dark, everyone wanted to here more Rage Against the Machine and they could not leave the stage fast enough for me. The band I wanted to see that most at the show did not get was Tool and now they pack areana shows and rage is a footnote. So open your mind you never know when the next great band is playing to you and you just might miss it.

Although the setlist has already been posted, there are a few things that I would like to make clear: Sober The Grudge Stinkfist (Added Interlude let left most fans singnig "I'll keep digging..." while Maynard had already stopped singing) Forty Six & 2 Eon Blue Apocolypse (Alternate Version) Schism (Alternate Intro) Parabol Parabola Ænema ------------ Intermission (No, not the song) ------------ Disposition Reflection Triad (Featuring John Stanier on drums, and Maynard on guitar) Lateralus Tool never fails to stimulate the human mind. An amazing show. Maynard: "Richmond?" (Crowd cheers) "Are you sure?" (Crowd cheers) "It sounds to me like West Virginia." (Crowd boos) "So is it West Virginia or Richmond?" (Crowd cheers) "That's what I thought."

this was absolutey the best show i have ever seen in my life. i was about 6 feet away from adam jones. maynard came out dressed in all leather. sober is the best song for an opener ever, i felt the set list was a little short it was also very predictable, i enjoied the molecules in the back ground during parabola and Ænema. i will definantly never forget this night, to think for yourself is to questions authority

Sober The Grudge 46&2 Stinkfist Schism Parabol/Parabola Aenema Disposition Reflection Triad (w/ Tomahawk's drummer) Lateralus Wow, what a great show this was, and for so many reasons. Everybody has been saying that the shows on this tour were well worth seeing, and they are all right on. How fitting is it that the one song they didn't play on last year's tour is the one they start this year's setlists off with? I was actually down in the general admission-pit area this time around, so I can't necessarily compare the ambiance and lighting of this year as well as the one from last year. But it just seemed like a more well-constructed show overall. Sure, they didn't play as long (i.e. no The Patient, Pushit, or anything like that in its place), and from seeing some of the previous show setlists it seemed like they left out a song or two - I'd heard setlists that included Flood, Opiate, H., and once, Ticks and Leeches. Regardless, well worth seeing. After Sober got things going on the right foot, the Grudge continued with its pounding percussive assault. They sure didn't slow down, playing a slew of songs off Aenima - Stinkfist did include an interesting interlude not found in the studio version, and 46&2 was brilliant as usual. Schism was about what one would expect, although they managed to add a few new tones and improvisations that made it that much more intriguing. No contortionists this year, but hey, what can you do... because they saved the stage props for Parabola, where the video's big spherical shapes - two in this instance - were hung from the ceiling and began to move as the song got going. Parabola was undoubtedly up to that point the best part of the show. Aenema was also good, of course, but nothing prepared me or anyone else in that audience for the four songs that finished the show. They played the suite - the three songs of Disposition, Reflection, and Triad that seem to go together largely because they were said to be the concept of just one song... it was brilliant in thought and execution. Disposition let the crowd cool down in a still-trippy kind of way, and then Reflection added to that, the first half of the song getting us swaying with the eastern-style drumming. When Reflection's heavy parts kicked in, that's when they revved the rhythmic motors and got the crowd going back at it... and then following that with Triad, featuring the drummer from Tomahawk on second drums. Triad stole the show without a doubt. Lateralus closed, and was great of course, Maynard giving an inspirational speech beforehand, telling us to use this inspiration and put it to positive use. Overall, this is the best headlining concert I've ever seen, better than Tool's 2001 tour shows. I don't think any band right now can match the overall feel and vibes that Tool create when they play... yes, there were a couple songs missing, but what was lacking in that respect was made up for by the rest of the atmospherics. Between the brilliant artwork - the human body in different stages of decomposure/levels, and all the other video montages they put on the jumbotrons, and the lighting that seemed to both amplify and expediate the pot haze, I've never had a concert experience quite like this one. Tool has said they want to play a "small-city tour", and hopefully that means I can see them for the third time in three years... it's just, after seeing the artistic mastery this band is capable of, you have to wonder where they go from here. Let's hope we see a new studio album in late 2003 or early 2004, because the way things are looking the band is only going to keep getting better.

This was this reviewer's 4th Tool show

Hey you! Read reviews already posted for your show to see if somebody already posted the setlist. The setlist has already been posted, so I will only emphasize the major things that stuck out for me at the show. NEW VISUALS - Yes, they played a lot of the same songs that they did last fall, and they had some of the same visuals, but they added a whole bunch of new ones, most notably (IMO) for Schism and 46 and 2 (it was a really creepy slug that kept eating its own tail and swallowing itself till no end). ALEX GREY BACKDROPS - I'd read about these in previous reviews, but I was impressed with how well they went with the performance. I was also amazed how I kept noticing something new in the design with little subtleties like a change in lighting shade or color. DANNY'S DRUMKIT - Absolutely amazing. It is the most gigantic over-the-top kit I've ever seen. The crowd started cheering when the roadie took the tarp off of it before Tool's set. TOMAHAWK - They were surprisingly well-received, and I met quite a few fans who were there for Tomahawk but happened to be staying for Tool. I met Duane (Tomahawk guitarist, formerly of The Jesus Lizard) earlier in the day before the show and talked with him for a few minutes. Really cool guy... Adam joined them for some Merkaba-esque feedback/noise manipulation from his guitar on a song, which was nice to see. John Stamier joined Tool on drums during "Triad" and he was playing pretty fierce to keep up Danny's tempo. All 4 members of Tomahawk came out dressed up as cops, I don't know if they do that every night. Mike cracked several funny remarks, here's a few: "What, you don't like GOOD cops?" "Maynard, why don't you come out here and rock out with us... [crowd cheers] What? Uh oh, I guess he ain't coming out folks. I want everybody to yell out 'Boooooooooooooooo!....' [crowd boos] 'Maynard can't rap... Maynard can't rap..." It doesn't sound funny if you read this, but trust me, you had to be there. TOOL - Maynard wasn't too chatty tonight, just the comments that someone else posted previously. Justin was very energetic in his performance tonight. Adam was inanimate most of the night. Danny amazed me once again with his drumming. Highlights of the show were 46 and 2, Ænema, and Disposition/Reflection/Triad. It was fun to finally get to see/hear them play "Sober" for the first time (at the previous 3 shows I saw last fall, they never played "Sober" once) .I saw quite a few people getting kicked/escorted out, particularly from the floor, although the crowd was far more behaved from what I saw than I had originally expected based on other reviews of this tour and my experiences last fall. Of course that dipshit somehow managed to get up onstage and pull a Soybomb (the guy who bumrushed the stage during Bob Dylan's performance at the Grammy's a few years back) but he was hustled offstage very quickly. I'm surprised he was even able to get onstage because there were like 8-10 security guys in front of the stage by the barrier. It was another fantastic show from Tool. I enjoyed the performance tonight better than any I saw in the fall because of the new stage setup and visuals. See you in Baltimore... And finally, I'd like to send out a special thank you to Danny Carey for coming out to meet up with the 15-20 fans who were waiting out by the buses after the show. He was hanging out there talking with us for a good 15 minutes or so and met/spoke with everybody at least to say hello and thanks for coming to the show. I was truly honored and thrilled to have had the opportunity to meet him.

Well, what can i say.. These Guys are Amazing!!! Im not sure how many people out there really get tool's creative music and images and everything that goes with the whole package, but for me. its an experiance that i will never forget. TOMAHAWK - ... im not really sure what they were trying to accomplish with this form of entertainment. but i didnt get it . their songs didnt seem to be going anywhere. to me it was just some guys on stage jamming around with no form of song writing structure. but thats just me.. maybe not my cup of tea, or i dont know. but the guys seem to have tons of talent, so il give them that. TOOL - Awesome... these guys know how to put everything they can into a show. i mean hey i noticed a few mistakes but oh well!! they kicked so much ass! the images, the video playing on the screens, the light spectacle.. was just amazing. i dont understand their symbol they had going on ..it had 7 points that was hanging above the band .i kind of came up with my own idea what it ment or. it could of just looked cool. but anyway!! the show kicked ass. my favorite song was.Anemia.. well my fav song also. always wanted to see it live! well Thank you tool. and hope everyone loved the show as much as i did!!

The show was awesome, well worth the 2 hour drive to see it. Even though some aspects of this concert reminded me a lot of the one I saw last September (the extended version of Stinkfist was identical, for example), it didn't hurt the experience at all. Triad was an audio orgasm, I enjoyed hearing it the way it should be heard...with Disposition and Reflection. The videos were amazing, and everything Tool did was right on. Their timing was beyond perfect on every song. I'm looking forward to the next tour. :)

ABSOLUTLY ridiculous! what a show! anyway, we drove 8.5 hours to get there(so i could see it with my bro who lives here) and 7.5 back. worth it. needless to say, i havent slept in 54 hours. well colliseums dont sound as good as ampitheaters, but tool still sounded unreal. yeah, adam didnt seem to be in such a great mood, but who cares? justin and danny were having a blast. the look on danny's face after the rock and roll excess triad jam was enlightening. adam diezels also sound unreal. and the way maynard spiral'd down on the end of lateralis was hilarious! the new stage set is supercool, it is so fantastic that it reminds of a groovey 70's tv show at times. maynard did a spectacular job of singing. but you could tell he was being cautious(i mean JESUS, how long has been on the road counting the apc tour?!?!) he is human and he needs a damn(long)break. when i saw them last year he was full and flawless. but none the less, he was still better than any other hard rock singer out there(except maybe mike patton). i should smack the bastard that dissed MR. PAUL d'AMOUR! he was completly badass so give the guy props---where do you think justin got a huge part of his style from?

I didn't see the set-list yet, so here goes (might be wrong order but this is close): Sober The Grudge Stinkfist (extended) Schism (extended) Ænema Parabol Parabola *Intermission Disposition Reflection Triad Lateralus The visuals were absolutely stunning. The Sigillum Dei was a constant theme throughout the show and, combined with the always moving works of Alex Grey (a la Sacred Mirrors), they created a sacred, personal, and vulnerable space in which the meanings of each song were not only understood, but physically represented. The new images associated with "Schism" were intriguing and Jon from Tomahawk came out to guest drums for "Triad". As usual, "Lateralus"was the perfect conclusion and it was a beautiful moment of closure after the painfully gorgeous performance of "Disposition", "Reflection", and "Triad". I am filled with so much hope after seeing how happy the members of Tool are with where they are going and what they are doing. I left the arena feeling elated; overjoyed with what I had witnessed...even if the blaring speakers were ordering me to "Get the fuck out".

This was my first tool experience, and I must say it far exceeded any expectations I had. Since I have never seen them live before, I found the fact that Justin and Adam didn't move around much rather refreshing. It seemed to me that they were more concentrating on making music than putting on a show. They let their amazing music speak for itself and that's what put on the show, plus the absolutely mind-blowing video sequences and Alex Gray artwork. I've been waiting since 1996 to see tool live, as I always seem to miss them for whatever reason when they are on tour. I will say that it was definitely worth the wait!!!! Tomahawk- I loved the deer statue. I was feelin the beat but the singers loud high skretching wasn't my cup of tea. i did think the oxygen mask mic was very original. The wait between Tomahawk and TOOL was unberable. But then they came out and played sober which i didn't hear last tour and i thought was great. I must have been standin in the asshole section and nobody told me cuz sum guy with a slipknot shirt started the pit right next to me. I got pushed and hit sum guy holdin his beer who then spilled it all on the back of my Cam De Leon Happy Pencil shirt.....sorry dude. After i found my place in the sea of people i got back into the TOOL state. I loved Ænima. Triad was way better then i saw in Raleigh. My pants were litterly moving with the beat because of the bass it was awsome. Then at the end lateralus was bout to get started and while they were playin sum emiem lookin asshole jumped on stage and was up there for a good 5 seconds before secutity did anything. Adam looked kinda pissed n started doing skretching sounds with the pick on his guitar. I thought they were gunna stop playin but like the musicans they are they played on. At the end of the show Maynard just left while the rest of the band did there thanking the crowd thing. Overall it was the best. I'd like to give a shot out to Justin his bass playing especially when playing schism was out of control. Maynard was very talkative and did alot of full body head bangs. Adam is the man what else can i say, Danny is great the best drummer of all time. The new Alex Grey visuals were great. Thank u TOOL.

This was this reviewer's 2nd Tool show

I can't hear. I can't envision. I can't possibly think of anything more amazing than Tool (Round 2) for me. The show started off with another Mike Patton side project. Tomahawk was interesting, to say the least, but I enjoyed it very much. Mike Patton has to be THE most gifted voice on the planet. Although the people in the crowd (especially in the pit where we were...right against the gate next to the right speakers) were big-time Tool marks, I felt that Tomahawk did an excellent job of keeping me entertained. Mike Patton moment of brilliance #147 "This next song is in the key of whiskey!" Of course, Tool rocked everything possible. Opening with Sober was like a dream (being as they didn't play it in VA Beach last Fall). Triad was ear candy to the fullest and began while Adam was polishing off Disposition. Videos were different from VA Beach, except for the ones for The Grudge (concentrate on the bleeding eye...), Stinkfist (the video all chopped up and repeated), Reflection (cause the world needs to see more underwater blowjobs), and Lateralis (the spiral). Crazed Fans 101: How To Jump On Stage Without Anyone Noticing-Get seats in the farthest left-hand corner, next to the stage, jump over the guard rail, run quickly up the ramp, celebrate like a fool before getting GORE GORE GOREed off stage by security. Seriously, at first I thought it was a member of Tomahawk. They threw about five signed drumheads and other assorted items, none of which came remotely close to where we were, and we were up front! The "gotcha" of the night goes to, once again, Stinkfist, with an even longer break than VA Beach. Schism went long as hell because Maynard's guitar went out of tune. Justin let his hair get long, compared to the short, cropped look from this past Fall. Adam and Dany were the same, while Maynard had a big, black stripe going down the center of his head. Interesting. The big, floating raspberry from the Parabol/Parabola video popped up during Parabola, then stayed through AEnima, leaving during the intermission. Not sure if anyone noticed, but the light rigging above the stage was in the shape of the seven-point Pentagram. Watching the shadows on the back wall was amusing, especially the deer during Tomahawk's set. Mike Patton moment of brilliance #296 "Tool's not going to come out until they see all your smiling faces! (makes big smiley face)" And...that's about it. Setlist (for shits and giggles) Sober The Grudge Stinkfist (complete with "GOTCHA!" moment) 46 & 2 Eon Blue Apocalypse (was totally feeling The Patient coming on, but instead) Schism (with extended middle part) Parabol (complete, right into...) Parabola (with FLYING RASPBERRY!) AEnima (with FLYING RASPBERRY! and people waving during "I'm praying for rain...") Intermission (with weird light effects and sounds) Reflection Disposition (Adam drawing out last few notes, well into...) Triad (featuring John from Tomahawk on bongo snares) Maynard says thank you and to turn his Satanic message into something positive, healing, and inspiring, before going into... Lateralis (followed by the band throwing stuff into the audience and COMPLETELY FORGETTING ABOUT THE PEOPLE BY THE SPEAKERS!!!) Best (out of two) Tool concert I've been to, but I'm going to have to think a good, long while about it being the best concert of 2002. Rush 1 & 2 may still take those honors, but only because Neil Peart is the GOD OF THE DRUM. Regardless, an unforgettable show.

this show was amazing. tomahawk opend and were okay, but i remember when the lead singer quoted maynard from sober "why can't we not be sober" which ralled people up and he also asked for maynard to join him in a rap session and mad fun at the fact that maynard can't rap (which is good). tool opened up strong with sober and proceded to play many a song from lateralus and aenima. the set was great with plenty of art from alex grey, and with some really cool videos. this concert was more energetic then my first tool concert which was last year at an ampitheatre in va beach. although the sound was a bit muddy they still rocked my fuckin socks off. the show ended around 11:00 (it began at 7:30) and was a great experience. after the concerts ther was even an attempt to tip over the van of a promoting radio station( they sucked ). well i hope ou enjoyed my pointless review now i feel special

Is it just me or Tool seem to have no energy up there, going through radio hit after radio hit? Even songs which have the most energy on CD like the grudge and anima sounded lackluster on stage. It's almost as if Tool were just going through the motions, not really putting their all into the moment. Their lack of energy came through in the music, sounding machinated and somewhat dissapointing. I saw them at the verizon amphitheatre last september and i got a much more positive vibe from the band, but maybe that was because i was so far back i couldnt tell dismal behavior from a corona light ad. At least Maynard faced us tonite, as I have read in other reviews that he sang with his back to the crowd the entire time. I did however enjoy myself and recommend anyone who has not seen them before to go, because you will not have a better Tool experience to compare it with. P.S. watch out if you have floor tickets, it seems no matter where you live there are always hordes of drunken redneck/fratboys that show up to Tool and fuck shit up.

Tool was good and I will accredit them with that. However I was overly disappointed with the crowd. Not sure if its just the dimwitted idiots from Richmond or their overly drunken state but I’m sorry you don’t mosh at a Tool concert especially not during lateralus or schism. I drove from Tennessee to go to this show, and I have to say it wasn’t anywhere near worth it, the fans were inconsiderate and completely too stupid to understand the lyrics or any of the songs meanings. I saw Tool last October in Charlotte and the fans there were great. What’s this say to me, perhaps fans in Charlotte are more intelligent or aren’t just conforming to a “goth wanna be” group so they can think they’re cool. It was sad, Maynard left stage frustrated with the crowd and it was apparent to the few who recognize him from past shows. Rednecks up against the rail yelling at Maynard between songs saying, “Maynard get your fucking ass down here!!!!,” they got looks of anger. Also I might note that this was a shortened set-list from prior shows this tour, yet again pointing to a shitty fan base in Richmond.

An excellent show, but can we really expect less? Tomahawk was interesting, kudos to those guys...they have lots of energy and at least proved entertaining. They were received relatively well by Richmond, but most people got bored by the second or third song and just stood around. These guys are great musicians though, and Mike Patton is hilarious. I must say, I did enjoy Fantomas more than Tomahawk. TOOL was fantastic once again. The set was a bit shorter than we had anticipated. Triad undoubtably stole the show, amazing drumwork. Aenima was great, as was Forty Six & 2....<----floor crowd went inSANE during this song, I don't think my feet were on the floor during the whole damn thing, I did however leave the show in one piece. =) All the new stuff was excellent too. TOOL's stage presence is amazing, Adam and Justin don't even move around but still energy just radiates from the stage like no other band. They probably would look exactly the same way as if they were playing in some garage or something. It is something else to just watch them collaborate and to see them genuinely enjoying making the sounds together....the occasional grin that graces Justin's face is just priceless. At one point Danny (who is AMAZING....I couldn't keep my eyes off him, he is stunning to watch) accidentally flung his stick, it just came right out of his hands, but he just came up with another one and didn't miss a beat....you never would have noticed if you hadn't seen it! Mathematically flawless. I must say, I did not get the same vibe that I did last fall when I saw them in D.C. Maynard in particular did not seem to be as into what he was doing, and I did not feel that connection that I did last time. It was also disappointing that he didn't get naked haha...it just didn't seem as though he was feeding off the crowd's energy enough to really go all out. I could be wrong, perhaps it was just me. I was distracted for most of the first 4 songs by the ridiculous assholes around me....the pit actually formed beHIND my friend and I, and it was a challenge to stay upright and not get smoooooshed...much less deal with a few assholes in front of me...one of which was just really psyched and that's cool, but the other one was just jumping around flailing all of his limbs in every direction wildly just to be an ass, I don't think he even knew what song they were playing. He elbowed me HARD about 4 times in the boob and once right in the face, to which I grabbed his shoulder to turn him toward me and said to him, "do you WANT me to beat the absolute fuck out of you, because you're just asking for it"...I think this surprised the hell out of him coming from a chick but it didn't matter because at this point I looked behind me to see my friend on the floor underneath a sea of insane people hopping around as if they were on pogo sticks.....scary....so after we got him on his feet safely we moved back a few yards to a more calm area of the crowd near the side edge of the pit where it was possible to focus on the actual SHOW. So I must say my full attention was not on TOOL the whole time. But the show last fall just did more for me....it was electrifying. But who can complain about a TOOL show right, it was still amazing... definitely the 2nd best show I've ever been to. Thank you Danny, Justin, Maynard, and Adam for sharing the experience!

This was this reviewer's 1st Tool show

After practically crapping myself for over a month waiting for this show, it finally happened. I didn't really know what to expect, so I just tried to keep my mind open. I was on the floor, and I was facing the stage, on the right, pretty close to the band. I was kinda near the speakers (my right ear is still deaf and it's the next day). I could see everything perfectly, which I was pretty happy about. Tomahawk zipped through their set, teasing us with a comment about Maynard coming out and rapping (what the fuck???) Michael Patton just didn't give a fuck about Richmond. They performed all the songs pretty well, he got a couple cheap cheers when he asked if we were all alcoholics or something. They were okay, but its too fuckin bad they did half-assed show. The highlight was Adam coming out and doing some trippy guitar shit for a couple minutes. After Tomahawk, we waited. And waited. And waited with some pretty lame industrial music playing. Drunk chick gave us a fun scene when she got kicked out. Anyway, the waiting sucked and it took a shitload of momentum away from the atmosphere. Then when the music and lights changed, the whole mood changed and we realized the wait was over. Sober kicked in and I was mesmerized. But honestly...Maynard looked bored up there. I wonder if they just do good enough to give a decent show in places like Richmond, Virginia. I mean he was moving and all, but even the 3 times he did talk...he didn't sound into it at all. He compared us to Huntington, West Virginia, which I couldn't see the point of, since it did nothing but piss most of us off. Anyway, I was almost embarassed to be at such a seemingly sub-par show. I was on the floor, and had to protect my lady-friend, so maybe that was on my mind a little bit...but I just felt a little let down. I mean, it was Tool, they were almost perfect (adam fucked up a couple minor times, and Maynard seemed to back off a couple of the more dramatic vocal pieces, like the "alive" part in parabola), so I'm definitely satisfied. But I'd like to see them again, maybe alone or something. I went with a grouop of 7, and only one of them was really into Tool, and it was kinda sad seein him sing along with the words and stuff, getting into the emotions, and then look over and see my other friends try to mosh during Schism and shit. How about the dude that rushed the stage during the last song? That was kinda cool...I wonder how the hell he got up there. Anyway, Tool is amazing, go see them.

Setlist: (I'm pretty sure that this is the order) Sober The Grudge Stinkfist (extended) 46 and 2 Aenema Schism Parabol Parabola Intermission Disposition/Reflection/Triad Lateralus One word: Amazing. A lot of bands tend to sound worse in their live performances, but Tool sounded even BETTER than the album. I was glad to see that Maynard talked - he asked us how we were and some other questions, but unfortunately I couldn't hear. Before Lateralus, he gave basically his closing remarks and he said that he "hoped that the next song would inspire us to do something positive." It was so amazing - words can't even describe how I felt at the concert. I had so much fun singing along and playing all the riffs on my "imaginary" guitar along with Adam Jones. To be able to sing along with Maynard live - that is an experience unto itself. Our seats were very good seats - I had a perfect view of the whole band, including Danny Carey's new drum set. Awesome. I was "dancing" the whole time, and I'm sure that if I was on the floor I would have done some serious moshing. And as for moshing - I was pretty happy to see that the people were there to listen to the MUSIC - not to just get drunk and beat each other up. Some minor pits started up, but nothing too intense. I think it was mainly because everybody was too caught up in Maynard's beautiful voice. His voice was so intriguing - the way he speaks is beautiful. The artwork was awesome as well - props to Adam. No major problems - a crazed fan ran up on stage but he was removed, and some guy tried to sneak onto the floor without a ticket. He was arrested, and got fairly beat up as well, I'm sad to say. But it happens, right? The Disposition - Reflection - Triad song TOGETHER was great - a half an hour of nothing but entrancing music to ensnare your senses. Tomahawk of course SUCKED - no question - but Tool definitely made up for their faults and more. The best part was at the end when they were thanking the audience and did - that's right - the group hug. The whole croud erupted into cheers, and it almost brought a tear to my eye. Simply beautiful. After listening to them on CD and MP3 for so long, it was good to hear them live and to have the "Tool" experience. No doubt I will be going next year, it was truly one of the most enjoyable and entrancing experiences ever. I had fun hugging people I didn't know in the middle of the riffs. Awesome.

Awsome show. Set list was the same as usual. Maynard showed off one of his many talents though, Danny's bass drum was broken so maynard just pulled out his dick and slapped it against a spare mic whenever Danny needed a kick drum. I don't know how he sang and did it at the same time. AMAZING.

I'll keep this short....the show was amazing (which is what I expected). I wasn't so sure how the crowd would be, since Richmond is a shithole that is full of hicks and dumbfucks (as several other posters have mentioned) but overall, they weren't so bad. I was ten to fifteen rows back from the stage the whole time and had a perfect view of the whole band. No one around me was half as much into the show as I was. They kind of looked at me like "where the fuck did she come from?" The visuals were cool, although I thought the live contortionists from the last show were more interesting. I don't think this show affected me like the last Tool show did, but that is because the last Tool show was my first and was practically a life changing experience. Overall, I'm glad I got the opportunity to see Tool in my hometown; I'll have one last good memory of living in Richmond before I move the fuck out of here in two weeks and never return! If you want to talk about the show or other stuff, feel free to e-mail me. I hope you all enjoyed the show like I did, Annie

A night of complete euphoria.... The first impression was a little testing of the high- the majority of audience members seemingly belonging to one of only two categories: 1) striving gothics who somehow managed to maintain a frozen, man-eating visage despite the fact they were moments away from witnessing otherwordly genius and energy, and 2) drunks hoping to make a scene or just get completely wasted. Tomahawk was not impressive, but at least provided the audience with an opportunity to take a pee-break before the Tool set.... Finally, droning, momentum-building music and dimmed lights hint the arrival of the music gods. Minutes later we behold the calm and modest four. Danny slides behind his massive set.It is illuminated in gold and there is an inspired sigh from the crowd. Justin grins so sheepishly, taking his place at left-stage. Adam doesn't appear very thrilled.....(and remains in that state for the remainder of the show). Finally......Maynard. Ahh. Such incredible inspiration to witness the keeper of that endless fount of talent. I couldn't keep myself from crying. You know the set list by heart by now, even if you weren't there, so I won't attempt to kick the dead horse any more. i will suffice to say that each song was carried off beautifully. Each element added more to the experience: the amazing visuals, the consistent swaying of Maynard to the odd time measure, the shadows of the members magnified and imortalized high above on the colliseum ceiling. And of course- the brilliant music. The most amazing thing of all was the sheer ease with which the music was played. Adam rarely showing signs of life; Justin's hands sliding so efortlessly and intimately up and down the neck; Danny's flawless recovery after dropping a stick; Maynard's simple gestures never hinting to the power emiting from him. The show was utterly awe-inspiring and I believe we each carried away at least a little piece of the message they sent us.

Well, where can I start? I just got home saturday evening at 10 P.M. after driving 9 hours to the show with 2 of my friends from Sharpsville Pennsylvania. The traffic was a bitch and we weren't quite sure we were going to make it in time. Well we did. On to the show. I had floor tickets which was 1337. ;) Tomahawk- I seen fantômas last year when they opened for tool in Pittsburgh and i thoroughly enjoyed them. I have the tomahawk cd and knew what to expect. Mike Patton is simply hillarious. He loves to get the crowd pissed off simply because he could care less. They were all dressed up in sweet ass old school police outfits and just rocked out. You either love em or you hate em. T O O L - Sober The Grudge Stinkfist Forty Six & 2 Schism Parabol Parabola Aenema ----------- Intermission ----------- Disposition Reflection Triad - (Simply blew me away. I never wanted this song to stop.) Lateralus Well i thought the acoustics were excellent. They really rocked out Friday night. I was especially excited to see the new stage setup that was developed by Alex Grey. I was more than amazed when that red curtain dropped after sober and the big picture was on display. Then later on 6 of the Sacred Mirrors pictures were dropped and put on display. Triad was indiscribable. It sounds nothing like the cd version live. They put a whole new perspective on it and Danny is without a doubt one of the best drummers ever. All in all this was well worth the nice long trip and I hope to see them again in the future. Thanks Guys.

This was this reviewer's 2nd Tool show

Tomahawk was great. I have had the cd, knew what to expect, and still didn't understand a word of Mike Patton's. I thought it was hilarious. He put on a great show thrashing around, and aside from the random ear-gouging screeches, it was a good opening. Tool, though...I was disapointed. I saw them last year in D.C. and it was incredible; my first time. This time the visuals were ten times better, and made the four hour ride worth it...but the sound was just plain bad at times. I am hoping that it was just the colisium, but man...The sound during all the Lateralus tracks was too connected. By that i mean that the guitar, bass, and vocals didn't stand out from one another very well at ALL. It was consistant, so i don't make mention of it on the individual songs. Sober (good opening, though maynard dropped some things down as he would throughout the evening. When he spoke he sounded sick.) The Grudge (First sign of sound troubles. I could barely hear Adam until the guitar solo stuff towards the end. Great scream by maynard, though) Stinkfist (interlude fooled many singing along with Maynard. It was funny. I like the seemingly-Skinny-Puppy- Remix-version-inspired end to the alternate verse) 46&2 (Dropped down lyrics. Sound was horrible. it sounded like mud. Until the last chords when the guitar and bass are together, the notes weren't clear at all.) Schism(more dropped down lyrics. Still good though) Parabol (beautiful) Parabola (great as well) Aenema (guitar and bass were muddied together again. It was better than during 46&2, though) Intermission Disposition(beautiful) Reflection(very cool) Triad (w/drummer from tomahawk on roto toms. My favorite for the night because it was one great long jam. The drummer was back lit very hard and cast a shadow the size of the colisium on the back wall, clear as day. Very cool.) Lateralus(very good, great closer) I would say that the concert was great, because it was Tool, so the music was well appreciated and the visuals were amazing. I can't wait for the smaller venue tour after this one so that i can see them where the sound is better so i can have another mindfuck like the first Tool concert i went to. They still put on a good show though, and they will always be my favorite band. Peace.

This is my second Tool experience. I travled all the way from Virginia Beach,Virginia. It was so worth it.My seat was on the second level. I was almost in the middle of the arena. Tomahawk was an intresting band. The crowd was so excited to see Tool. Tool came on the stage at 8:45pm,and the show ended around 10:45pm. The first song was Sober. The crowd was calm while Tool played I did not see any moshing on the floor. Listing to Tool is like a religious experience. I just danced and sang to all of Tool's songs. I am so glad that I brough my binoculars. The stge was setup very nicely. The stage setting was very hipnotic. Also I could not keep my eyes off the videos that Tool had going at the same time. The video were very nice. Here is the set list I think it is all correct. Sorry if it is not: 1.Sober 2.The Gruge 3.Aema 4. Forty Six& 2 5.Schism 6.Parabol 6a.Parabola 7.Stinkfist 8.Reflection 9.Disposition 10.Lateralis The t-shirts were nice. I got one and I alos got the Tool buttons and stickers. This concert was worth my time and effort. Thank you Tool for opening my third eye!

This was this reviewer's 3rd Tool show

well, let's start with this, if Tool isnt the best mother fucking performance to ever walk planet fucking earth, please, someone stand up and prove it... i went to two shows this week, Hunting, WV, and Richmond, VA and the two shows really displayed for me how tool reacts to an audiences and controls the energy of the show completely. For the Hunting show i saw in Sec. 4 and was on like the 6th row or something. maynard was not feeling the crowd and had his back to us for everything after Sober, this tours opener it seems as of late. * This brings me to a point. These people who want to hear songs and are upset with repetitive playlists, i understand your desire to want to hear those songs as we would all like the band to play each and every one of their songs, but they just cant stay up there and do that, they're the hardest working musicians on a stage today, well, Danny atleast. Anyhow, the songs they choose are part of a concept idea. Not necessarrily a concept story like THE WALL, but a concept in general, the Lateralus Concept, and they display it for you in full and those are the songs that belong on the setlist for this SHOW. If you see tool this tour, it's going to be something you tell your kids and grandkids, they are the band of the century, maybe the millenium, no, definitely the millenium. music that is moving, talented, and just unbelievably put together with visual art and idea, that's what TOOL is. If you were at the Richmond show, tell me you didnt feel an odd sense of worship as the sevenpointed star lowered during TRIAD??? Danny be thy name. When Dan and John go at it out there, it's unfucking believable. I felt so much energy and oneness at that show, it just seemed that the audience and Tool were connected enough to step aside tonight, god knows i weeped like a widow during Triad. I feel bad saying this but Cudos to the stage jumper dude. He didnt want to fuck the band up or touch them or anything, but that mother fucker has a story to tell, he got to stand on stage during Tool's closer, what a great fucking thing to do, how the fuck did he get up there anyway??? So, yeah, TOOL is the best band of all time as proven by this tour, and I'm a changed man, Ill see you guys in Cinncy for my last tour until after Moline. Peace

having been a long time fan of tool, i've only on this tour been able to see them live...and looking back i think that this was probably for the best...i love the musical landscapes tool creates as they mature and get older...the introspection carries far more emotional and lingering feelings than the older music... having seen the band in september here in louisville i knew that i was gonna have to make a few treks as the tour went on...my wife is an absolutely devout tool fan...so we planned a vacation around the richmond show...9 hours in a cramped truck to see tool... being that i've always had a soft spot for anything mike patton's done, i was anxious to see tomahawk...they delivered as a band as well as baring patton's trademark quirks...he derives great humor and satisfaction goading a crowd...always has...even when FNM were at the height of their popularity...watching him stand bare faced to the crowd and have the balls to try to provoke something besides indifference was amazing...my wife loved the set...even not liking the music...adam of course made his nightly appearance...but after 35 minutes tomahawk was out... after walking into the lobby area closest to the bar, i spotted justin and a taller woman actually standing in the beer line...he wore a blue and white checkered shirt and khaki shorts...i elbowed wifey and said "justin...."...and she made me shut up so as to not draw attention...they saw us, gave us the "please don't blow it for us "look(in a cool way)and grabbed their stuff and walked away casually unnoticed...i think this was super kickass...coming out into the crowd probably to gauge the mood and vibe and going anonimously...he wore glasses as well...i just think thats cool...this was right as tomahawk ended... after the intro music got louder and louder and smoke clouds periodically lifted into the rafters the lights finally dropped and the screens illuminated...the low, intense keyboard pulse below shook the hall as the crowd surged forward...the members walked on slowly and as always maynard was last...of course most people overly focus on him because of their connection with his lyrics and opinions...and because he's simply the singer...he has a commanding presence just standing and waiting...the visual aspect of this tour is such a concerted effort to take the attention away from him...and force everyone to focus on the music and the feeling you're having at that moment...from the unexpected opener "sober" to the absolute power of "triad", the band locked themselves into their own hypnosis and absorbed what each was giving out...i'm glad the performance troupe wasn't still on the tour...while very visually bizarre, the images, in my opinion, drew energy away from the music...the repeating guitar line in "reflection" gave way to the psychotic percussion entrance to "triad"...much like janes addiction, tool can induce near states of psychosis with the bass and drum groove loops hidden within their more intense compositions... the night ended as usual with the group embrace... and the feeling that you've seen something totally unique in todays music...total naked honesty... 18 hour round trip for hours... worth it...

A quick word to Richmond: You guys made me eat my words to my friends. I figured the show wouldn't come close to selling out, though it is my understanding it came very close. Also, I felt good about the crowds energy. It was good energy directed at showing the band that we appreciate their music. I was impressed. If the band is reading, you blew me away. Without a lot of pushing and shoving I managed to make my way about twenty feet from the stage before the show started and I wasn't even jostled once the whole time. I guess most of the people up close were like me and wanted to watch the master musicians at work rather than bang heads in a mosh pit. The show was incredible, definitely an improvement on what I saw in Greenville. And I came this close [---] to snagging one of Danny's drum heads but someone knocked it away from me, or maybe I knocked it away from someone, but neither one of us got it :) PS Great arm Danny, now teach Maynard how to throw. Oh yeah, did anyone else notice that at the start of Parabola the floating-ball-thingy on the left had a bit of trouble staying afloat. It was very entertaining to watch and it looked like someone threw a sheet of paper or maybe fabric softener or something on top of it to get it steady.... ?

A Great show. This is the only band worth going to see in this day and age. There is nothing more to say to the people that GET TOOL. To the ones that still don't - keep trying.......... Musically there is a lot more happeniong that anyone realizes, they play this well because they love playing, they grow and get better, because they love playing. When it gets to be routine, you do it, you do it, because you love to play. They do it better than anyone.

This was this reviewer's 3rd Tool show

I drove about 3 hours in Friday afternoon from Durham, NC, to see this concert and it was worth it. It was my third TOOL show and in comparison with the previous ones (in Warsaw and Cracow, POLAND, during European 2001 tour) it has been better arranged but on the other hand it was considerably shorter!!! (only about 1,5 hour). Everything was great, as allways, and I am waiting (impatiently) for the next concert located near to my new place of live, maybe in NC?...

Why is their music so in sync with the visuals on screen? EX: The beginning of The Grudge and the cymbals go with the tick of the psuedo-alien's eye is it that they are masters of their art and can stay in time so well? its truely amazing! or is their equipment ran to a computer which then syncs a visualization program to slow the fps on the movie? I dont know but they are #1. short show compared to fall, and i think they know they'll have too many fans go into cardiac arrest if they played third eye... but wishful thinking is an all time high
