Review written by: amos f (none) Review posted on: 07/23/97 16:53:14 i didn't have tickets for the seats in the actual amphitheatre, i just had lawn seats. luckily, i managed to sneak into the seats for both bands i was there to see: KoRn and the one and only TOOL. both were highly wonderful. nothing i've done in the entire summer could match up to the emotional gratification of these two bands, especially the latter, duh. as stated before, KoRn probably helped energise the crowd for the later tool set. after korn played, tricky played, who i was sort of interested in seeing, so i made my way into the seats during their set, thinking that tool was playing next, but when tricky was tearing down, a big canopy was pulled out that said "the doggfather". i couldn't leave, cuz i couldn't have gotten back in, so i sat thru that awful set, which was a small price to pay for seeing lovely tool play afterwards. one thing i love about tool is that they are very emo, more so than any band i've ever heard. my theory that their level of emotion on their records could never be exceeded was disproven when i saw them play live. i've never made more movements with more passion in such a small space (between the rows). thank you tool, you make my life wonderful. i loved the videos, the appearances of the band members, and the attitude of both the band and the crowd. only regrets:no pushit, no H., no 4 degrees. loved it and enjoyed it. it was like a mental orgasm.

WHEN I SAW TOOL IN RALEIGH BACK IN NOVEMBER I WAS EVEN MORE IMPRESSED THAN I WAS WHEN I SAW THEM IN 93 BUT I NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS THOUGHT THAT I WOULD SEE THE BEST PERFORMANCE EVER!!!!! AT LOLLAPALOOZ A THANX GUYS YOU FUCKING RULE

Review written by: Diogynes (mgarabed@email.chass.ncsu.edu) Review posted on: 07/15/97 08:33:13 I went to Lollapalooza this year with the sole intention of seeing Tool. I sat eight hours through other bands to see the best concert i have ever seen. Maynard came walking out on stage with a bustier striped pants, a topknot, and his face painted white. The two guitar players came out painted blue and green. He played songs from all Tools released CDs. The most impressive part of the concert was, when they started to play the song Opiate from the Opiate CD. My GOD is all i can say. I sat down to enjoy the song and I could hear the ENTIRE ampitheatre singing the words along with him. I was a big tool fan before Lolla, but now I will be a fan for life. Maynard rulz and long live Tool.

Review written by: Philip Roesel (plroesel@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/02/97 21:42:26 Once again, they rocked as all the other reviews said, but for the Aenima video, Maynard said that it was the second time that the video was shown, but in fact was the third time after Atlanta and Charlotte.

Review written by: Jason Ross (ross19@ibm.net) Review posted on: 07/01/97 00:57:21 I have a comparison between this show and Charlotte's: This show was all around better than Charlotte's. There were few differences between the two: Songs differences: C- swamp song, pushit R- prison sex, jimmy Band memebers: C- MJK- different color pants Adam - was blue R- Adam - was greeen Videos: C- pushit: elephants and camels mating R- prison sex: Mr. Prison Sex Music: C- broken guitar string R- distorted bass -adam: got tired of it and switched bass guitars, 46&2 ended without music from the bass as a result. Atomosphere: C- taken back in silence, with little crowd involvement R- well prepared (KoRn helped with their preformance earlier in the afternoon) Grade for the Show: C-A+ R-A+ -it's Tool and they deserve nothing less than A+'s for reproducing album quality sound to the audience, unlike some of these other bands out there nowadays. If any readers have a chance to check out Tool, I seriously suggest that youi do so and take all friends with you. The more people that hear and LISTEN to Tool the more informed people will become to a number of issues that people must deal in everyday life.

Review written by: Dave Conklin (dconklin@geocities.com) Review posted on: 06/30/97 13:05:51 Great show! Set list and fashion statements as detailed above. Wished Tool had started a little later...somehow the music has more impact in the dark. I saw them last Fall in D.C and I definitely like seeing them in a closed venue more, but hey...any Tool is better than no Tool! Maynard was intense as usual but "danced" less and stared more. The quote before Jimmy (paraphrase): "A little earlier we played a song called Prison Sex...It was about recoginzing the cycle of abuse. That's the first step...the next step is to work through it...that's what this song is about..." My only complaint is that I wished they played longer. I was really looking forward to hearing H. , oh well. As for the other bands: Tricky was ok, Snoop's act consited of getting people to say "m*ther f*er" really loud in unison, and Oribital was quite amazing. Korn was very interesting... mosh pits broke out in the grass area and by the second song the crowd had pulled back the tarp and started throwing chunks of sod into the seats. Pretty funny. By the end of Korn, my scalp was covered in soil and my beer had a chunk of grass in it. Fun was had by all.

Review written by: Curtis Pauff (KuRtDogg@aol.com) Review posted on: 06/30/97 01:10:55 Great show, as usual. Maynard had on the standard Lolla attire (white face paint, breasts, etc.). The bassist was painted green and the guitar player blue. The drummer was "normal". The set list was something like this: Hooker w/ a Penis Stinkfist Eulogy 46 & 2 Prison Sex Jimmy Sober Opiate nema During Hooker they stopped playing for a second and Maynard said something about t-shirts on sale and continued with the song. Then they showed the nema video and Maynard said "this might be the only time you will see it cause MTV probably won't play it " or something like that. All in all it was a very good show. They definitly outshined all the other bands. 2 thumbs up.

Review written by: Danielle (chickey@bellsouth.net) Review posted on: 06/29/97 22:16:56 One note before I start...this is either good or bad depending on which way you look at it. I'm sick so I went to Lolla about 6 and stayed for Tool and left right afterwards. So I didn't get to see Orbital though Maynard suggested that we all stay to hear them or we'd be missing out. The setlist was: Hooker with a Penis Stinkfist 46&2 Prison Sex Eulogy Sober jimmy Opiate Aenema Along with Aenema, they played their new vid which Maynard said might be the only time we see it being MTV didn't know if they were going to play it. Maynard was dressed just as everyone else has said, in a white top with breasts and striped pants with a white face and lots of makeup and a long ponytail attached to his head. Justin was greenish and Adam was very blue. I couldn't see Danny. The show was great; like there would be any doubt about that. Maynard said something before jimmy about how it compares to Prison Sex. I couln't hear it well enough to quote it...I hope someone else can! He did say, "Raleigh...are you there?" at the beginning after Hooker... A neat thing they did was put some funky shit at the end of Stinkfist. It was pretty fresh...What amazed me most was the wide variety of people at Lolla. Old and young, there were people who looked like they should have been at a rave with pacifiers and people who looked like they were at a Rusted Root show and people who looked like they just stepped out of a frat house. So I guess everyone has some taste cause they all looked like they were loving Tool. It was a really great show altogether!
