The venue was just too impersonal and I hope he returns to the (legendary) Boathouse when he is next in the area. Thanks for the excellent show anyway.

As you can imagine, when the most incredible quartet in modern music took the stage the place went hermitile... The reverend Keenan had this fantastic Phantom of the opera white face paint and white shorts and an intrinsic whte bra... he stated after the first number (unbelievably enough, Hooker with a penis, something Ive rarely seen them do live) that he was experiencing symptoms of transvestism flashing back and in order to keep the wolves at bay, he had to do it... great show all and all... but ill never be satisfied... i was the only one left after Tool went off.... (sorry radish)

Review written by: Jay Williams (JwTrustno1@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/02/97 23:13:16 Ever since I heard the first notes of "Sweat" I knew that Tool was an unbelievably amazing and talented band. I also knew that they would be great live. Tool's Lollapalooza show at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater exceeded all my expectations. I, along with four of my other friends, made our up as close as we could get to the stage (about 15 feet). Being a drummer myself, when I saw Danny's set rolled out, I was in awe. Just as dusk turned into night, I saw Justin in full purplish-blue body paint str ap on his bass and get into postion. Then came Danny as he sat behind his massive set. Adam followed soon after. Then came Maynard, white- faces with a fake ponytail and fake tits. Yes, tits. He also had on small white skin-tight shorts and small hee led shoes with white socks. Overall he reminded me of A.) a hooker with a penis or B.) a Chinese doll. After a bit of feedback came the first wailing notes of "Hooker with a Penis." I went crazy as they launched into it. The energy was unbelivable. I 'd never felt so emotional to live music before. I had goosebumps the entire show. Next up was "Stinkfist." It was a slightly different version then what appears on the album. They then went into "46 & 2", then "Crawl Away." The entire time I was scr eaming along and just letting the music fill me. Danny Carey is my absolute favorite drummer and was completely tearing it up. I was so excited and privalged to see one of the most talented drummers ever live in concert.. The next song was "Eulogy." A bout 20 seconds into it we were kicked out of the close seats and had to move back. I was pissed but nothing could stop Tool's powerful music and message, not even a mere extra 20 feet. For some of the effects on "Eulogy" Maynard used his voice and a strange type of microphone or something. I couldn't see exactly what he was doing but I know that it was with his mouth. After "Eulogy" they went into "Sober." I couldn't resist but do dash back to the grass to crowdsurf about 5 times. They did a ten - minute intro to "Sober." I rushed back towards the front of the Amphitheater to our seats to hear them play "Opiate," one of my favorite Tool songs ever. Right before they started it Maynard was talking about how when someone has a message, an agent always come and screws everything up for the sake of money. He also said something along the lines of "We don't hate religion, just know that everybodys' gotta be cool and respect each other and do what is right." It wasn't exactly like that but all I know was that he summed up Tool's and my general beliefs pretty well. They played "Opiate" and I enjoyed it thouroughly. After that Maynard said that we would be treated to the "Aenima" video that Mtv (EmptyV) won't play. They played "Aenima" and walk ed off stage, leaving me screaming for more, yet very thrilled at what I had just seen and heard. Like I said, they blew away all my expectations and senses in one beautiful barrage of music and stunning visuals. I love Tool for their music. I love Too l for their message. To top off the entire night, I got to meet the man himself, Danny Carey, my favorite drummer and the best drummer I've ever heard. I nearly dropped my Coke as I saw him standing there with a big smile signing stuff. I casualy walke d up to him(as best as I could considering I was shaking with excitment the whole time) and waited until he faced me. I told him how much I love his drumming and how he is an inspiration to me and how unexplainably great their set was. He said thanks, I shook his hand and he signed my ticket stub. But his signature wasn't the best part, it was knowing that I had told him what I had been wanting to tell him for a long time. I left feeling energetic and full of respect for Tool and their music. I have relived the concert in my head constantly since it happened (last night). They are the most talented group of muscians I have ever heard. I would have to say that it was the best show I have ever seen and would like to thank the band for a great show an d for showing me to think for myself and to belive in myself. Tool is the greatest.

Review written by: Meghan Beardsley (Nermal8@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/02/97 21:14:22 Tool at the Lollapalooza tour was the best show I have seen and did see that day. I think out of all the bands that come to Virginia Beach this one was the best. Personally I love tool. I love the sound and the lyrics. I wish I cold have met them, but I came close, my best friend sat back stage with them. I think the makeup was a great affect. And showing the new video was a great touch because Mtv does not play Tool very often and the videos are always exciting. i hope that tool will return and I will be sure to go and enjoy my self again, with my favorite band, TOOL. ***Meghan Beardsley*** ***Virginia Beach, VA***

Review written by: Joel Mahaffey (toolophile@psu.edu) Review posted on: 07/02/97 17:45:45 Tool came out about 8:30 after 6 and a half hours of crap to sit through (well, ok, Korn was alright.) Adam was purple, Justin was blue, Maynard had on a mask or face paint [I couldn't tell], a long ponytail (fake) and all too real breasts. Danny was unpainted. The set list is as follows, but I'm inserting paraphrased segues. Hooker with a Penis (halfway through hwap, "T-shirts are over there...just for you") Stinkfist "Hello Virginia Beach. I apologize for my drastic mood swings lately, as you know I'm a recovering hermaphrodite, and I'm experiencing some...side-effects. This song is about that." 46 & two "This is a love song. It goes out to Gwen. Mine [breasts?] are bigger than yours." Crawl Away "You guys should make sure you stick around for Orbital after this. They're pretty amazing" Eulogy Drum Solo/Sober "This next song has a lot of controversy around it. Many people think that we are anti-religion. That is not true. You see, it seems every once in a while, someone has a vision, you know, love everyone and peace and happiness and all, and everything will be good. But then when they try to share it, they use an agent, and that's where everything gets fucked up, because they bring money into it. This song is about those agents, not about the message." Opiate "I don't know if any of you get M2 out there, but if you do, then you may have seen this video. But if not, well, MTV's not so sure they want to show this, [crowd boos] so this may be the only chance you have to see this. That is, unless you have something better to do?" nema Well, I got up then, and went to go see if I could get backstage again, and when I got to the side gate, I found Munky and Feldy of Korn. Interesting. Munky was really high/stoned/generally out of it. I then found a security guard who was actually willing to help, and he made some "calls" on his walkie-talkie for me, but they weren't allowed to talk directly to the band, so my plead for entry was lost in the shuffle. I hung around for half an hour, hoping to see someone who would help/give me their pass, and just as I was about to give up, Danny shows up. He breezed through the crowd (no one recognized him), but I managed to stop him, and introduce myself. He was very friendly, even when 10 year olds saw me talking to him and assumed he was someone of importance. I asked him about Zaum, and he said that Chris was busy with Lusk right now, but they hoped to resume work late fall or winter. I left the show feeling good, I had seen a good show, and could now go home for 5 hours sleep before work the next day.

Review written by: Jimmy (Prljim@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/02/97 02:51:30 I've been to some good shows in my time , but Tool has to be the best I've ever seen. Maynard's stage presence is absolutely captivating while the other members seem to mind their business and make the songs slam. I thought he looked great with his long ponytail and padded bra. The band sounds incredible live.
