Tool at Lollapalooza 1997 Tour Reviews

Date: July 15

[Note from Kabir -- I think I'm jealous that I missed this one.] Review written by: Ben Safin (Ben_Safin@auto.ittind.com) Review posted on: 07/28/97 10:05:43 The show was awesome. I was very impressed. Maynard came out wearing either a mask or a lot of white makup on his face. (I had lawn seating so I was a bit far away) Wierd thing was, he was wearing a bra and quite honestly filled it quite well. From what I heard, people who were sitting closer than I was said it looked VERY real. Of course, I doubt it was but, wierd. Anyways, looks aside his voice was awesome. The band played very tight, like rythym virgins. TIGHT AS HELL. It was amazing to watch. I've heard a lot of bands play live and Tool was definatly one of the best. Espacally for not being vetrans at touring yet. (As compared to bands like Pink Floyd or Metallica.. Whoever) They played a Led Zeppelin song that was not part of their regular set. I wish I knew the name but, they did pretty good. There was a movie playing in the background but, they played too early for anyone to see it really. Near the end of the show you could see it okay. Only complaint about the show was it wasn't long enough. I'm hoping one day they will have their own exclusive tour, maybe with one band opening up for them. In short, they rocked. It was evil, demons crawled up from the soil I was standing on, grabbed my legs and pulled me down into a hole I'll never be able to crawl back up from. Ben

Review written by: Andy Shanks (DropnElbos@AOL.com) Review posted on: 07/22/97 12:53:49 When Tool FINALLY took stage, there was a flow of electricity that built up in me. I have awaited seeing Tool since Undertow. Now I had the chance. Any Tool fan can tell you, the music really sets a mood. It starts out kinda mellow, building yer rage, and then, >SNAP< yer out there throwing fore-arm shivers and headbutts on a steep ass hill. I had to say the thumb I broke, and the 20 pounds of dust I digested was well worth it. My personnal favorite was Hooker With a Penis. besides the hardcore beat, t he message is so true. I'll be looking forward to seeing these guys again real soon.

Review written by: Brian Masson (bacardi9@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/22/97 00:50:02 I have to say that tool is by far the greatest band in the world and wasn't disappointed at all to hear them play. Although I would have done anything to have heard them play longer the show still kicked ass. I wasn't a real big fan of the other bands playing but when tool finally came on stage it made the whole day worth every penny. I just wish that I could have made it to a concert were Tool was the only band to be heard. I thought Maynard coming out on stage with mime make-up, a bra (with breast that looked as real as could be), long pony-tailed hair, and opening up with Hooker With a Penis couldn't have been any more appropriate for Lollapalooza (a "sell-out" concert to begin with, in my opinion). Anyways tool kick ass and I can't wait to see them again, Thanks for an excellent show Tool.

Review written by: KingMob (Shortstop@eol-online.com) Review posted on: 07/21/97 00:59:45 What an amazing show. I was with my friends and was a little confused on who was going to play next. My Friend was sure that Devo was going on next, but the Pentacles and Light setup didn't seem like Devo. Well then "Hooker with a penis" came on and we had to wade through the crowd to see them. At first I was really shocked, not that Maynard was wearing a bra, but that from the grass it looked like you could see Nipples through the bra and these were some MASSIVE breasts. At first I didn't get it but now it makes perfect sense, I think I was the only one there who got it. (Anima) Well, the show was Beyond great and the stage show was great, as Maynard Skulked around the stage and how he used the megaphone on "Eulogy" great stuff. The only negative thing was that the sun was shining on the scr een during the show and we couldn't see the projections from the grass. I was watching the show until I got shoved into the Dust Mosh Pit. Overall a great show, Both Tool and Lollapalooza. Peace Through Superior Tactics...

Review written by: Anna Banana (Spooksam@cardina.net) Review posted on: 07/20/97 22:19:35 yes I know they said one review, but I had to say that was my first time seeing tool too, and I liked them before, now I love them. Once way back when undertow came out I called my local radio station and told them I wanted to hear "sober" and that the song made me feel like running naked through a thunderstorm, I tell you what ALL their songs make me feel like that, so alive so totally wanting to be "naked" I also didn't get teh tits and stuff but as I said before they are very different and that is cool. I loved Danny, he plays drums like he is making love to them, he has got to be one of the BEST drummers around, Justin....what do i say? green is a very good color...anyone have extra tickets to this Saturdays show in Grand Rapids? I am a 27 year old married (tho I don't want to be) mother of two boys and yesterday I cought my 6 year old singing "Jesus won't you fucking whistle" so I think I will have to lay off them when the kids are around, hey they are in bed now, gotta go slap on the headphones and listen in the dark. later Anna

I love original, different is better and nothing is more different than tool. I was 42 rows back at Pine Knob in Detroit Michigan and let me tell you I would have loved them to play for the whole eight hours, they didn't play long enough in my opinion. They opened with Hooker With a Penis and just had me standing the entire time. I love what Maynard does with the microphone. I really wish I could thank them for such a great time. If you guys are reading this THANKS!!!!!!!! Anna aka Spooky

Review written by: murchop (Murchop@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/18/97 21:58:38 WOW!!!This was my first time seeing Tool and I think that I am Hooked. When they played No Quarter I thought that I was going to die! They played it awesome! Before the show I just liked Tool, now they are my favorite band. No complaints from me except that the Tool show was too short, and Snoop took too long. You missed a concert that rocked, wish you were there.

Review written by: Sam (sjones@tir.com) Review posted on: 07/17/97 23:37:54 I have to say that that was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Tool was outstanding and they really made Snoop look bad. "No Quarter" was awesome. At the end I was really worried that I wasn't going to get to hear nima but not only did they play it, but they showed the kick butt new video before MTV showed it. The performance was very explosive and im greatful that I got to see it.

Review written by: Matt Porath (X93porath@wmich.edu) Review posted on: 07/17/97 14:23:10 I'm not sure if my $40 could have been spent any better. This was my fourth time seeing Tool since November and it was easily the best show I've seen. Our seats were pretty good and we could see everything. The setlist was as follows: Hooker With a Penis Stinkfist 46 & 2 Undertow Eulogy Sober No Quarter Opiate Aenema After seeing Korn's set earlier in the day (which was VERY strong), you could almost feel that Tool was going to pull off something huge. No Quarter was the definite highlight of the evening. I felt privileged to be able to see it, even if me and my friends at the show with me were some of the only people that knew what the hell it was. We got a totally perplexed look from the 14-year-olds in front of us. No clue. All in all, it was a fantastic show, and I anxiously await the video for "Aenema" on everyone's favorite music (?) channel, MTV. Sorry you had to miss this one, Kabir. Review written by: Brandon Lang (Srlang@northland.lib.mi.us) Review posted on: 07/16/97 23:13:53 TOOL kicked Ass, they were awesome. I was in total amazement. Maynard looked great in his costume and Justin came onstage in green body paint. Every song they played was perfect. It was definitley a surprise when they play "Led Zeppelins, No Quarter". Their Aenima video was pretty cool I couldn't see the screen very well but what I did see was pretty good. Overall Tool was easily the best show at Lollapolooza.

Review written by: I.M. Pissed (kraegel@ismi.net) Review posted on: 07/16/97 21:22:09 I just want to say I'm crying right now, I live in MI and missed the show. My friend went and got to tell me how great it was, then I got to read the reviews. No Quarter? Waaaaa!!! I need that book on Lachrymology!!! -I.M. Pissed

Review written by: RGS (gkscalf@dcache.net) Review posted on: 07/16/97 17:27:15 For all you youngsters out there I am a 35 year old Tool fan. This was my first time seeing them. I was not disappointed. I was impressed with the power and energy generated by the band. I was also impressed with the way in which Maynard captivated the crowd with his piercing eyes, makeup and outfit ( I had pavillion seats, center stage row 20 ) I read some of the earlier reviews complaining about how they did not involve the crowd. Those folks missed the show. Maynard hypnotizes the crowd and allows you to feel the music. If you want an artist to involve the crowd then you can put your hands up in the air with Snoop Dogg. I am lucky enough to get to see them in Chicago later this month. I will be interested to compare the shows. Disappointments ? Yes, They did not play enough songs. ( especially after having to endure James,Tricky,Snoop Dogg ) Sometimes the music drowned out Maynard, especially the bass. But, the bass was loud for all the acts on this day. Again, Tool delivered and did not disappoint. My brother was not a Tool fan before the show. Now he is sold. RGS

Review written by: Eric Upell (learntoswim@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/16/97 12:22:22 I was impressed with Tool's show as usual, it was my third time seeing them, I was a little upset that the crowd was not getting into Tool's performance as well as they had in the past. I enjoyed the whole day, all the performers were good, but I do want to make one comment on the crowd during Korn, I watched a guy fall down hit his neck on the bar on the lawn, and people just jump on him and not care. 3 girls layed down on him to try to stop it, and they just trampled them, I think it is to bad that the people arond him did not have enough respect for him to help him out, and last thing I have to say is, Snoop it was Tool's house not yours.

Review written by: Master Reviewer (kjrobbin@alpha.delta.edu) Review posted on: 07/16/97 09:50:26 Tool put on a great show. I have never seen them play before, but Maynard puts forth so much emotion into the songs that it just sucks you right in. They played a song I had never heard before and before the song said "For all of those over 25, we wrote this." Any clue as to what was the name of that song, Anyone? Also, the video for Aenima was shown and it is EXCELLENT. Jones did a great job on this one! All in all, one of the best shows I have ever seen.

Review written by: Steve Bekkala (sbekkala@umich.edu) Review posted on: 07/16/97 00:58:22 Holy shit. Tonight I can now die a happy man. This was my sixth Tool show, and even though it was one or two songs shorter than they would normally play, it was the best. We sat in the right side of the pavilion, about 30 rows back, but our seats were really good. The setlist was unbelievable: Hooker With A Penis Stinkfist 46 & 2 Undertow Eulogy Sober No Quarter Opiate Aenema It was clear from the start that Tool were out for blood. Korn had played a very strong set earlier in the day that got the crowd really going, so it was clear that they had their work cut out for them. And perform they did: every song was just *ripped* through like there was no tomorrow. Danny was adding all kinds of crazy new fills to the songs that he hadn't the last few times I've seen them (the end of Eulogy, for example). Tool had the crowd by the balls. Not one, not two, but three new songs added to the list that I had not yet heard. Hooker was the last song from the new album that I had yet to hear live, but I finally got to hear it tonight. What a great opener. I *totally* did not expect to hear Undertow, a song I have been dying to hear on this tour. And then after Sober...wow. Maynard mentioned how this was the last night of the tour for the Orbital, and they wanted to play something for them they don't normally play, and haven't played in a while, so "it might be a little rusty." I was nearly shitting at this point, trying to guess what they were going to play. I was expecting Jerk-Off or something from Opiate that they haven't played in a while, but then Maynard added, "Oh yeah, for any of you who are under the age of 25, we wrote this song." and I KNEW that it was No Quarter, since Maynard tells the same joke on a couple boots that I own. I couldn't fucking believe that we were about to hear it, and I looked at my friends and screamed, "No Quarter!!" We started going nuts, and everyone around us was staring at us like we were deranged or something. *Nobody* around knew what is was, and they didn't understand what we were getting so excited about. Regardless of the recognition it received, this was the single best version of this song that I've ever heard them play. Following a great Opiate, Maynard said, "We've got another little treat for you. Here's a video that you probably won't ever see on MTV" and then they tore through Aenema to end their set. All in all, this was an *amazing* performance by my very favorite band, and I feel very, VERY lucky to have been there. If anyone else was there, or just wants to talk about it, feel free to drop me a line. Steve Bekkala sbekkala@umich.edu

Review written by: Josh (jvancamp@mail.cass.net) Review posted on: 07/16/97 00:19:19 Awesome show tonight. Hooker with a Penis Stinkfist 46&2 Undertow Eulogy Sober No Quarter Opiate Aenima I was pretty disappointed with the rest of the Lollapalooza acts. Is it me, or does Korn just play the same song over and over? Along the same lines, Snoop's act consisted of the word beeyatch repeated at frequent intervals. It all sounded the same. I felt sorry for most of us Tool fans who were contained to the great plain called "the lawn". I never ate so much dust in my life. It wasn't as much fun as some other Tool shows I have been to simply because most people weren't as hyped as I was. Tool overcame this with strong renditions of Undertow and Sober. The gem of the evening was the No Quarter cover. Maynards vocals take the song to new levels. It was beyond belief. The intensity was awesome. Unfortunately too many kids failed to realize what the song was or it's significance. All together, a night to remember.

Review written by: $oze (esaab@umich.edu) Review posted on: 07/15/97 23:39:05 lollapalooza: good tool: perfect hooker w/a penis stinkfist forty six & two undertow eulogy sober **no quarter** opiate aenema maynard: beautiful

Review written by: meredith (CrapWeasel@juno.com) Review posted on: 07/15/97 23:28:33 set list: hooker with a penis stinkfist 46 & 2 undertow eulogy sober no quarter opiate aenema it was awesome... justin was completely green, adam had a red stripe on his chin, and maynard was dressed as a chick. ponytail, white face, black shiny spandex pants that flared at the bottom, platforms, and what looked like a red ANGEL bra from Victoria's Secret... maynard said, "michigan michigan michigan..." after stinkfist. then before no quarter he said something like, "this is a very special night because it's orbital's last night on tour and to honor them we're playing a song for them. we haven't played it for awhile so forgive us if it's rusty. " then he said something about it not being for people under 25 or people under 25 would not know it...something like that... then maynard said before aenema, "we've got another special treat for you, you'll never seen it on MTV." i thought that video was sweeet!!!! the best thing about the set was that they played undertow...i wasn't expecting it. it was a nice surprise!!! anyway, i guess that's all i'll say...i'm keeping it short. :)
