Review written by: Tim Parker (BEASTIBEAR) Review posted on: 08/07/97 17:09:08 TOOL is incredible.....and completely mesmerising live. I enjoyed MOST bands at Lollapalooza.....Tricky is a loust performer, but a great musician.....Snoop's BIOTCH chants were enough to make me an anti-fan......got to see all the "hip-gangsta wanna bes " suburban white kids try to act cool and hip to his music......whatever. James.....fabulous. Failure.....completely underrated and just incredible..........Prodigy.......eh....the hype will wear off soon...too much posing goes on with them. TOOL is just a great act to see and to hear. They are captivating. I am SOOO glad they played Crawl Away......now all I need to hear is Intolerance at one of their shows and I'll be happy. My fav quote"Hey Missouri....Show Me.....no really.....Show Me" Great Job guys....as usual!

I have all of Tool's stuff, except for bootlegs. And I thought their cd's were great, they were mediocre compared to live Tool. It was two hours of pure adrenaline! I recomend a Tool show to anyone!!! Tool kicks ass!!!!!!!!!!!

Review written by: Chad Ray a.k.a The Fonze (http://c.ray/fonze) Review posted on: 08/07/97 14:30:22 Tool was awesome!! I've seen a lot of shows but theirs was really something special. The scariest part was the banannas, and when he started eating the bagels, oohhh the insanity! I don't understand what the new song about squirrels has to do with testic les but then again I am not very good at riding a bike. Yesterday my mom left hamburger on the counter to thaw, and my dog urinated in the corner. I can't remember where I left my whistle. Maybe someone can become my friend. Anyway, whenever Rage Again st the Machine came out dressed like Burt and Ernie, that was after everyone left and we went for a rollerblade extravaganza! I really liked when the performed " I'm gonna knock you out " by LL Kool Aid. But when they started throwing lobster tails at u s that was the highlight of the show. Ohh i just farted! I work at Price Chopper in Lee's Summit, and if you want to call my at home my number is 525-3292. I really like the Spin Doctors!

Review written by: Brady Hanson (It's419got1) Review posted on: 08/01/97 19:32:52 Tool as I had expected, was the best band at this years festival. MJK was not quit as animated as he had been in Nov. at the American Theater. The crowd came alive when they took the stage and didn't stop moving untill the very last note.

Review written by: rob (rbpne) Review posted on: 08/01/97 00:14:12 i went to lollapalooza yesterday just to see Tool play. i sat through six and a half hours of terrible music to listen to one of the greatest bands ever, and i have to say that it was everything i exspected and more. the show was fantastic, the costumes were amusing, but the best part was the quality of the music. they couldnt have sounded better if they were in a recording studio. to all the Tool fans out there that havent had the oppertunity to see them, it is a must. if they come within two or thr ee states of where you live, i would suggest going. i want to say thanks to the band members for the show, and appologize on behalf of st louis for that asshole throwing the water bottle at Keenan. i hope you come back again so my friends and i can see you!

Review written by: Phil Cogley (pcogley@freenet.columbus.oh.us) Review posted on: 07/31/97 21:49:02 Ok, well obviously you can tell from my email address that I don't live in St. Louis. I really live in Columbus and I went to the show there, but I left for vacation so I couldn't write a review on it. I went with my brother Zac. Oh yeah, if any of you saw me there I was the guy painted half blue and half green. Enough crap. Here's what I have to say. Skeleton Key- They were on the second stage first and they were quite amusing and weird. The bassist looks like a dirty farmer, the guitarist looks like Paul Shaffer, the drummer looks like a crazy tough guy, and the trash percussionist looks like a trash percussionist. They were ok (far better than many of the bands there). We walked around a lot during J&D Marley, but they have neat beats. James- Somewhat irritating because the singer was really into being a rock star. They invited Brian the Jumping Guy onstage though, that was cool. No Korn- That was too bad, but they're not Tool so it wasn't that big a deal. Tricky- Not very good at all. He very rarely faced the crowd and I just don't care for his style of music, Snoop Doggy Dogg- Apparently very big here in St. Louis, but I would prefer to never see him again. He wouldn't have been my cup of tea anyway, but he didn't really play songs. He just pranced around with his two little hench idiots commanding everyone to say his name or say bitch or say hell motherfucking yeah or whatever. It was just a big ego trip. Failure- Saw very little of them because we had to smuggle everyone into the lower pavilion for Tool. Pretty cool, the singer could stand to be a bit more emotional when he sings (maybe he is, but he doesn't really sound like it). Prodigy- Fun to dance to. And oh yes, Tool. Justin was white with black lines all over him (it almost looked like electrical tape). Maynard was in drag again, this time with a Richard Simmons wig and 70ish pants.\ Adam had on a t-shirt and jeans and his hair is much shorter all of a sudden, which is too bad because he doesn't look so mysterious. His choice, though. Danny was in his usual sweat attire. Now for the music. Hooker With a Penis- I know Maynard says it's about breaking down the process of pointing the finger and realizing that everyone is connected, but it's so _fun_ to point the finger! It was a good song to hear because I was getting tired of hearing "Tool are sellouts" and such. Stinkfist- Damn good, especially with the new extended bridge. Why don't they put these things on the albums? The way Maynard holds the "If I really don't feel anything at all" part now is great. Forty Six & 2- Already an incredible song, but seeing Adam's fretboard wizardry firsthand makes it better than orgasm (not that I've ever had sex, but what the hell). Crawl Away- Well now, this was fun. I'd never seen it live before so it was a special treat. I especially like the guitar part right before the second chorus. It's hard to put into words, but it kind of adds a sense of drama to the song; the melody Adam plays is haunting and gives new meaning to "emotional" guitar playing. H.- Maynard said, "How many of you have children?....Do you love them?...............This is a song about choices." The "I don't mind" part was just crazy good. He said it many more times than usual and got quieter each time (at the same time the lights got dimmer and dimmer). Then, "I DON'T MIND!!!!" and Danny, Justin, and Adam slammed back into action and the place got really bright and oh boy oh boy oh boy was it neat. Eulogy- Was its usual badass self and the end is longer, but that's nothing new. Sober- No long intro, but there was a little bit of fucking about. Not much to be said here, we all know it's a great song. Pushit- Maynard discussed Tool's objectives, such as knocking down the currect image of "strong" and not trying to be tough guys and allowing yourself to cry and be emotional. Right on. Pushit is very powerful in the live setting, and I very nearly did what Maynard had just told everyone to do. Opiate- Neat stuff, especially the beginning and end. Nothing new can be said about this one. Aenema- Cool beans, man. The video is really cool, but I don't have a clear image of what was going on in it because I was to busy using up all of my energy jumping around and all that. Oh, how I wish they could do encores at Lollapalooza. Maynard had a few other things to say along the way, such as, "St. Louis......Show me. No really, show me." That was fun. Also he made a short speech about the point of alt rock festivals, which is to get you to listen to and enjoy some things you might not have had you not come. That was very cool. And yes, Maynard, I did. I have seen Tool four times now (all after Aenima- embarrisingly enough I was too young before), and I have enjoyed them each time. They are better in concert halls of course, where they draw their most dedicated fans, but they have been exceptional at Lolla as well. I only have one complaint--I wish they would play a wider variety of songs at shows. If any of you know Tool personally (Kabir comes to mind), maybe you could pass the word along. The songs they play are incredible, but I get into songs more if I haven't heard them live before. It would seem like maybe they'd get bored and would play "Undertow" of "Four Degrees" or whatever to spice things up a bit. It's just thoroughly depressing to know I will never get to see the magic of "Opiate/Flood" live. Oh well. I guess I'll hit the marketplace soon and try to trade for some boots or something. Bye bye, thanks for wasting your time on me. Feel free to email me or whatever if you have nothing better to do.

He spent last night in the hospital with some serious injuries. If you saw anything, at all, please contact me. If no one takes a stand this kind of violence will continue. Our sincere thanks... Review written by: Zac Cogley (cogleycz@slu.edu) Review posted on: 07/31/97 20:53:08 Skeleton Key was very entertaining to watch. Interesting percussion section, lots of energy. Very funny moment when someone from the crowd yelled, "Why aren't you guys on the main stage?" The bassist, singer replied, "Well...we're not very popular." I was not that impressed with James, but the 'Jumping Guy' who is fairly well known in St. Louis, caught the singer's eye and was asked up on stage to dance. He's this really tall dude who goes to shows and mostly jumps up and down THE ENTIRE TIME that a band that he likes is on. Nice distraction. Not impressed with Tricky, but then I only really know his new album and he didn't play much from it. Snoop was fairly apalling. The crowd's incredibly positive reaction to him was even more so. Failure was interesting, but I didn't get to see much b/c we were busy passing tickets in and out in order to get into the lower pavilion for TOOL. I don't really have that much to add to the other reviews. One thing that was especially cool for me was that since I was in the seats I was not smashed into other rabid fans and was actually able to move a bit. A whole new experiece from being smashed into the barrier at all their other shows I have attended. Instead, I was able to voluntarily smash myself into the seat in front of me whenever the mood struck. Free will is a lot of fun sometimes. A note on the pit on the lawn, according to my friend Kevin: There were apparently three distinct pits, featuring the standard huge run across the crowd and kill each other pit, the run around in circles pit, and the crowd surfing pit. Kevin was mostly in the crowd surfing pit, and he said that it was sick, every time a girl went up she was pretty much naked in about 5 to 10 seconds. Interesting that after Maynard's comment about being strong through sensitivity and compassion instead of being a tough guy the crowd has no problem pushing that to the back of their minds and senselessly groping some women who were attempting to have a good time. We had heard early on from some Riverport staff that I know that TOOL would be playing a double set due to Korn's absence. This was, of course, totally wrong, every act on the main stage just played 10 to 15 minutes longer. I was excited though, thinking that they might play Flood or another song I haven't heard live. They didn't, but I had never heard Crawl Away before so that was quite the treat. A note on Justin's makeup. The black/grey splotches on him looked to me like pieces of duct tape. An interesting idea to say the least, but made him look really sickly, almost like someone dying of late stage AIDS. I don't know if that's the look he was going for, but that's what I got out of it. TOOL probably won some new converts, they were better received than anyone but Snoop. My friend Lynn, who spent a good half hour of her radio show here at KSLU playing AEnima and making annoying comments (mostly for my benefit), even thought that they were great. Prodigy was really fun to dance to non-withstanding my inability to understand most of the lyrics I was not already familiar with. They played mostly stuff from the new album except Voodoo People. The crowd didn't decide to like them until after they had heard Breathe. Kevin said the lawn sucked, almost everyone had left, there was no pit, and people were watching him dance instead of trying to kill him. Interesting seeing a band with a dance vibe in the U.S. for a change. I had a wonderful time. Peace Out.

Review written by: Bill Katt (jcribbett@Cmdc.com) Review posted on: 07/31/97 15:00:54 HOOOOOOOOOYAAAAAAAAAA! I have never seen Tool play live, but, I can safely say theirs was the best freakin' show I have EVER seen. The lights, the sounds, the sights.... Lollapalooza will probably be slammed on by most, but, I had a really good time. While most of the bands sucked, a few were definitely worth checking out. For those of you MJK junkies out there, get to the show early, now that Korn as dropped out, I guess Failure will be kicking off the mainstage. Maynard was nice enough to come out and introduce them with a hearty "WAKE UP ST. LOUIS!!". I think I was about the only person sitting there (out of about 100) who recognized him. He said that Failure was one of his favorite bands, and that we should see as many strange, beutiful and different thigs as we could during the festival. Failure is worth seeing. They are kind of like a Heavy Metal band on Valium: hard sounds, not much movement. My favorite of the festival (besides Tool of course) was Skeleton Key. They are DEFINATELLY worth seeing. Tool came on at about 8:15 and played a powerful set. It's afternoon a day later and my ears are still ringing. But it was well worth it. Maynard was in a red afro wig, tight 70's style pants and his Bra/falsies that look absolutely real, as well as the white makeup. The only other member dressed up was Justin who appeared to have white paint on his torso with black splotches all over the place. Here's the set list as I can remember: Hooker with a Penis Stinkfist (extra solo stuff before "I'll keep digging...") 46&2 (-) Ions (short version, just the Jacob's Ladder sound) Crawly Away Eulogy ---Drum solo with funky bass feedback H. Sober (with guitar and bass feedback intro) Pushit Opiate AEnima (with video) DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES miss this festival if it is in your area. And don't go just to see Tool, get there early and soak up as much as you can. Broaden your mind... Ack Thbbbt.

Review written by: Lee (leewells@midwest.net) Review posted on: 07/31/97 14:40:20 Mostly the same as above, with one small exeception. Before nema Maynard actually said "This song is about an apocalyptic colon", which I thought was really funny and makes a hell of alot more sense than "apocalyptic dusch".

Review written by: Gabriel (cnfderectn@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/31/97 13:19:09 well, where to start, hmmmm, this was my third show on this lolla tour and probably the best one. Tricky gets better and better everytime so i recommend giving him a listen if any of you people have yet to see lolla. Tool came on around 8:15 about a half hour later than at the 2 previous lollas i attended, which was cool cause it was almost completely dark. They came out, Justin was painted grey with black rectanglesall over, and maynard came out with an afro wig on and of course a bra, mime/china doll face paint and sort of 70's style disco pants on. I was hoping for the full body paint that i got in cicny but oh well. Before h he said this song was about choices, and my highlingt of the night was pushit cause i have seen them 12 times since aenema has came out and that song eluded me everytime, before it Maynard spoke in words of how people need to realize they have emotions, and need to feel free to accept them, we dont always have to be a tough guy, he recommend crying(lachramology) any ways, i am sure if you scorll down you will see the set list, it was a gooooooood day, if anyone will be at dallas on saturday, e-mail me later gabe

Review written by: Jeff Stevenson (PaganWolf@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/31/97 11:21:22 All I have to say about Lolla 97 is Tool....Snoop was monotonous, and Prodigy was just too loud (don't get me wrong they are cool but they were too loud for fuck sakes!) Anyways, back to Tool. Carey's drum kit took up a huge chunk of the stage and he knew how to hit every piece of it like he was ringing a fuckin bell. Chancellor and Jones ripped the crowd away in Opiate and Stinkfist the most (in my opinion). Maynard was simply incredible. It looked like he was looking right at me for five minutes at a time. Being in the second row, I sang right along with him face to face. The "Apocalyptic dusch" video (as Maynard liked to call it) was just the trick for the Aenema song... great closing piece. I was kinda bummed that MJK did not speak that much between songs though...he did say a few funny things. "So St. Louis...SHOW ME" (cheers) (while pulling at his zipper)> "No really... show me." Maynard also had a good message about making the right choices and being able to make oneself stronger by expressing their emotions. What got me was that the crowd ate it up too! Their were a few jerks who kept yelling out song titles....i even heard one guy say Harry Manback! Anyways, tool was more of an experience than a show. Great work guys and keep playing the music that you feel! I hope KoRn will come to St. come to St.Louis one of these days again...get well Munkey!

Review written by: Brian (fcheckett@worldnet.att.net) Review posted on: 07/31/97 02:15:26 Just got back from the show, and I must say that Tool was the only band worth seeing at the festival. Not that I didn't enjoy the entire experience, but it really must be said that Perry Ferrell was probably on crack when he attemped to bring back the feel of the first Lolla. by introducing rap into the normal stock of musics. Of course, there will be people who would debate this with me all day, but, I'm getting sleepy. I killed time until Snoop and his BIOTCHES left the stage, and took my seat in time to hear the hysterical Bill Hicks recordings, which included a mellow-jazz version of Hooker that was simply funny as hell. Finally the fog machines kicked on and Danny and Adam walked on stage. They were followed by Justin, who was painted in a black-light sensitive whitish-bluish substance. Maynard came out last, all decked out in fake breasts, tight pants and a curly, bright red wig. Song list was mostly the same as in the other cities, and went something like this(I_think): Hooker w/ a Penis Stinkfist Crawl Away FortySix & Two H. Eulogy Sober Pushit Opiate AEnema Bluntly put, I thought the show was great. However, they weren't as good as when I saw them last year for their AEnema tour. Of course, I was in a smaller, enclosed theatre, and in the pit about 15 feet from the man himself, so I am slightly biased. They played awesome, and seemed a bit more spontaneous than when I saw them last. I don't want to spoil anything for anybody, but they revised some of the songs, and had some really kick-ass solo segments with Mr. Carey and Mr. Chancellor(sp?). The only thing I have to bitch about is the lack of between-song comments. Both times I have seen Tool, there has been just a general lack of crowd interaction. Maynard always seems to say a couple things that express his main themes for the show(wow...Only band I know that has themes...) but never to the point that I have read about in other cities. However, this was one field in which this concert surpassed the last one. Maynard gave his a speech about Open minds, and alternative festivals as a prelude to Pushit, but really only limited himself to that. It could just be a mood thing, but I can't help feeling a little left out. I'll end this review by quoting the Maynard on the funniest thing he said all night. "Do any of you....have children?" (unsure crowd roar) Yeahhh! "Do you...love them?" Tool enraptured the crowd with it's sound, and inspired the minds of those of us who were still coherant after all the pot in the air.

Review written by: brian (?@??.??) Review posted on: 07/31/97 01:53:13 SAME AS ABOVE. TOOL IS AWESOME. THEY REALLY HAVE IT TOGETHER. AN INTERESTING (JAZZY?) VERSION OF "HOOKER.." WAS PLAYED BEFORE TOOL CAME OUT. ALSO, SOME BITS OF BILL HICKS' WORK, WERE HEARD BEFOREHAND.

Review written by: Don O'Connor (hifivin@prodigy.net) Review posted on: 07/31/97 01:08:50 OK! What can I tell you about Tool in concert that you don't already know. Tool kicked my fucking ass... as always. Maynard was dressed like a hooker, I guess it goes good with the opener, Hooker with a penis. Maynard was painted up like a mime with a big, brown whig which was big and reminded me of some cheap hooker with big hair. He also wore a pretty red bra with a great set of tits underneath. The set was the same as it was a couple of nights ago that somebody else had in their review. We didn't to get to hear No Quarter but got to hear Pushit, one of my favs off of Aenima. Always great to hear Opiate, although I was pissed off when a couple of kids in front of me sat down while they played it. I don't care if your a new Tool fan but you just don't sit down during one of their greatest songs just because you don't know it! What a disgrace. Anyways Tool rocked that's all that mattered. Thanks for having such a great page for us fans that have nothing better to do but to wait for another Tool show. Get well soon Munky, we missed you guys today. Korn must come to St. Louis soon because you fuckers owe us one!
