Review written by: Real Tool Fan (GtarWiz@awwwsome.com) Review posted on: 08/28/98 01:59:22 Just a focusing statement: Any true Tool fan doesn't care what songs they play, as every song is awesome. Be it Jerk-off or Stinkfist, Tool is the best...disliking newer stuff doesn't make you a better tool fan, just a "close minded" one, and we all now how Tool feels about that! LONG LIVE TOOL THAT ROCKED RENO WITH A PASSION!!!

Review written by: long-time-fan/first-time-viewer (lv4muzic@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/27/98 17:59:53 First of all, anyone who says Tool is not in it for the money is wrong. I don't care about "selling out" or any of that bullshit, but Maynard needs to be careful of his greediness. Complaining that this little Reno show did not sell-out and make enough money is pompous and frankly, quite stereotypical of a rock star. It broke my heart to hear about this from one of the people who brought the show to Reno in the first place, because now I know that Tool will not come to Reno again. The show was another thing. They opened with "Part of Me" with Maynard running out on stage with a wig, black bra, and tight, short, spandex shorts. The rest ot the songs they played were from nima including "Third Eye," "Eulogy," "46&2," etc. They di d include only 2 songs from undertow which were "Intolerance" and "Sober." Maynard did seem happy during the show by exclaiming that they were the background porn music and everyone should "put their hand on a pole or stick their fingers in a hole." A nd before they left to come back for the encore he announced, "This is the time when we act like we're leaving and you all scream 'Tool' and then we come back." The encore was the Led Zepplin cover "No Quarter" which was astounding! The whole group did a great job- they made the song better than the original version. And the very last song was nima. The stage setup was weird because Danny Carey was behind the left speakers. This man needs to be out in the middle of the stage, so everyone can see his drumming action!! During "46&2," I ran over to the left of the speakers and peeked around, so I can see his solo near the end of the song. Overall the production of the show went very smooth and the outcome was amazing, but seeing what they did for other shows makes me think they jipped Reno thinking that there's no real fans here--playing the recently popular songs and not the ones that wou ld gratify true tool fans.

Review written by: Stuporman (IAMSTUPOR@AOL.COM) Review posted on: 08/24/98 18:18:48 The Reno show was fucking awesome. Maynard was at his best. When they played Forty six & 2 i almost busted a load in my pants. It was so fucking awesome. Everyone there was very very generous with their weed. Thanks to all who help out the man w/o a sack... I was the guy with the JACK IN DETOX shirt for those who know me... I hope to have as much fun at the next concert in Santa Barbara. It was a great concert.

Review written by: Shelley (ssquier@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu) Review posted on: 08/24/98 14:09:27 Wow! After 13 Tool shows, I finally got to see No Quarter! It was an awesome surprise and sounded great! I would have to say this was my favorite show of the 12 I saw this year-second only to Lewiston. This set was great-I especially loved hearing H and Swamp Song. Maynard looked great as always! It would have been fun to gamble with the band in either Las Vegas or Reno, but hey-it was way fun anyhow!!

Review written by: jaymz (patagonia.com) Review posted on: 08/21/98 16:30:02 Lots of females came to this show......good to see. It was great watching Keenan come out and find that meditative state as he stares out over the crowd. As soon as Danny sees him find his stare, he kicks in with 'part of me'.......like he just ques in when he sees Keenan is ready. This was my 5th time going under the influence of TOOL live, and I had not seen H. or Third Eye yet...... Dumbfounding. Keenan seemed most involved during H., his "I don't mind" was like an ancient mantra Keenan was screa ming back at one of his fears. Sound was ear-splitting.... I can honestly say I have never been to a concert that loud, including previous tool concerts. I was on the rail up front, right in front of a speaker stack...and at one point I heard a sound l ike flapping paper in my ear. Scary. Had to move towards the back to get a look at Leary's " Question authority, think for yourself " speech. Very cool. Nice visuals for the head, great message for the heart. Acid doesn't hurt the whole experience, either. Kept watching the video d isplay during Third Eye.....there is no band anywhere like Tool. My honest impression was that the band was tired. Not even the most trained of ears could have picked this up from the performance, but to me it was totally evident from Keenan's demeanor. Maybe he was just pissed about losing $35 in our slots! I have a feeling that whatever he said before 'No Quarter' had a lot to do with his mood. Did anyone hear what he said over the dipshits that started cheering after his first word? Please, if you heard what he said, submit it to this section...I think it had something to do with war, and those bombings in afghanistan/pakistan. Whatever it was he said, it started like this " I have something I'd like to talk about, something that's been troubling me in my heart... " (crowd cheers and you couldn't hear a fucking thing past that). He got really worked up and obviously was bothered by something very deeply. By the way, did anyone hear Keenan change his voice several times during 'part of me' and 'eulogy', he was singing in a nasaly female voice....I've never seen him do this before. Maybe he's taking the tits thing one step further? On a fucked up note, one tool fan - who'd probably heard Keenan's plea at previous shows - stripped down and started groping chicks before the show. Y'know, get naked and fuck? Well, it didn't last long for this dude. He was picked out of the crow d and seated in the security area. When he tried to escape he got mauled by security and arrested. So much for following the lead singers advice blindly, eh? I'm not sure Keenan meant just grab anybody and start fucking, I'm pretty sure he means for yo u to have sex with a partner who is at least partly willing. Still, it was disturbing seeing a naked guy getting handcuffed and bashed around by four security guards. It just shows freedom is not that simple. Out.

Review written by: NOW (b_mullins@rsvlonline.net) Review posted on: 08/20/98 19:07:34 Hello all went to ToOl show in Reno. It was great and here is my day. We started from SACTO area NorCal, ate some magic brownies a 2:00, wandered illegally around Reno at 3:00, went to Event Center at 4:30, waited till seven blazing hot sun and in at 7:30ish. Real trippy surround sound style sound effects before bands came on, good head music. Melvins came on and were OK . i started in the pit (more on that later), and they got it goin' pretty well. Buzz was pretty good live and set the right stage for ToOl to enter on. Not that any stage is ever wrong for these guys they'll blow any audience's mind away...So the Melvins, despite all talk to the contrary at earlier tours, gave a real good experience. in other words: Fucking Kicked Ass. The crowd really liked them in Reno, which must make them special (good and bad) compared to more of the midwest and east coast venues. Reno is a redneck town... So ToOl. ToOl. Came. On. Part of Me started, a living thrashing pit of people merrily banging away at each other with all assorted protruding body parts... mind blowing toOl as ever I was wanderin round the pit section, which covered the whole floor, maybe the size of a football field, and some dude was all nekkid and they threw him out...guess he listens to the music... Maynard made some comments about poles and holes, fucking, gettin nekkid etc. Some dude finally listened hhhhhhhoooooooooohhhhhhhhhoooooooooohhhhhhhhooooooooooohooo anyhow eulogy was next and threw the crowd into convulsions most people seemed to know the words and everyone was entranced by the music. of course. I crowdsurfed here for about 1.5 minutes, right during 'come off your fuckin' cross' etc. Awesome. then H, and 46&2, (maybe wrong order) and Swamp Song. Belligerent Fucks Being an occasional belligerent fuck and an extremist tool fan I will take their defense for a moment. I spent the whole concert in the mosh pit, 2 hours + . I came out dripping wet, slightly scarred and bloody and a little bruised on one ankle. And tired, of course. Being a belligerent fuck does not necessarily mean that one cannot be a tool fan. I knew the words and rhythm of every song they played, any they could play. Being a belligerent fuck does mean that a person allows the music to flow as physically equivocable out of their bodies as the sound flows into it. It is a release of the tremendous power of the sound that is imbibed by listening to ToOl's music. ToOl's music is about pain; giving it as well as taking it. While you may be inclined to take it, others must supply the giving...so if ya don't want none don't come in! Of course this was ToOl... Third Eye came on and blew everyone's minds away, i thrashed in this small circle of moshers, we weren't shovin or nothing just protecting a small bit of space... shared territory we could safely be shoved into...press of bodies wonderful like Livestock...i had an urge to baa like a sheep the whole concert... occasionally in rut with badass mosh chics...Girls that go into pits are hardcore you all kick ass. Girl Power and all that... anyhow so a few of us moshed like that to third eye and we looked at each other's insanely uplifted eyes and it wuz real cool... we smiled like grinning wolves running down game... in sheep's clothing... baa. good crowd experience i love group religious experience. Read William James Varieties of ' '. Then they played Zeppelin's No Quarter and it fuckin rocked that high note in the guitar warpedbended my mind... thoroughly ToOl. Sober was anthemic and by far the hardest period of the mosh pit that night, followed in a close second by 46&2, Aenima, and Stinkfist... Aenima last and it rocked i sang along with every word fuck all those guntoting hip gangsta wannabes ... I go to the show that was moved, August 30 in San Jose. It is their last show of the summer...i'll be there and tell you all about it. NOW stands for No Other Way...i hope i get to hear the new Pushit August 30...

Review written by: Nick (nickvogel@juno.com) Review posted on: 08/20/98 15:45:35 Of course they did not disappoint. This was my fifth time seeing them and even though it was a great show, nothing special really stuck out in my mind except this: I'm beginning to see a distinct difference in Tool "fans" at these shows. A small percentage of the crowd are the ones that truly appreciate the beauty of these consummate musicians. The other large portion of the crowd are a bunch of fucking idiotic macho studs that instead of listening to the show and taking a piece of the concert home with you, they want to run around and literally beat the shit out of other people. It's unfortunate that we have such fucking dipshits in our society. I realize that that's the way you react to concerts, but don't ever call yourselves true Tool fans. You're nothing. Rot in hell all macho studs.

Review written by: Sean (GtarWiz@awwwsome.com) Review posted on: 08/20/98 08:22:35 All I have to say is: THEY PLAYED NO QUARTER!!! I'd seen the song included in the posted set lists on past reviews, but I was completely unprepared for how awesome it sounded. They kept the integrity and mood of the original Led Zeppelin version, but re-interpreted it in a way that makes it very much a Tool song. As for the venue, the sound was crystal clear, my ears are still ringing after a 4 hour drive home! But I think I stood in the same place out front waiting to get in for like 40 minutes before they let me in. I will always remember looking behing me after "Sober".... MJK started waving goodbye to us and said something like "Now here's where we pretend to go off stage and you all make some noise and then we come back and do another song"....the place just erupted--voices, cheers and chanting "tool tool tool" everywhere. I turned around for the first time in 60 minutes (while they were playing I was oblivious to anything behind me--which includes most of the people there) just to look back at how many people were there. Man, I don't know how many people this place can hold, but it was full! This was my 2nd Tool show, and my favorite--They were right on, everything sounded perfect, the melvins I didn't dig at first, but after 20 minutes or so I think they grew on me...their drummer is awesome and Buzz did a good job on stinkfist. I would have liked to have heard Sweat, but I didn't come to hear any one song really, I came to see Tool, and they came out and kicked my ass! LONG LIVE TOOL!!!

Review written by: Dave Hendricks (belial@greatbasin.com) Review posted on: 08/20/98 04:33:11 This was my 5th time seeing TooL. (no relevance, except to appease my tiny ego). The entrance to the Livestock Event Center is kinda lame. My Freinds and I got in Line around 7:20 (the doors opened around 7:00 according the ticket stub) we waited bout 40 minutes before finally getting in the door. Irony is that we are all lined up next to the Cow Stables. Many might say we are no more then livestock and by the sheer numbers of us they might be right. Used to be you went to a show and the Venue was small and the number of TooL fan's outnumbered the number of "Heavy Metal" fans who are just there to smoke their Bud and Drop their Acid and get Smashed Drunk. IMHO those kinda fans are very annoying. Alot of reviewers have Bashed the Melvins UnFairly I think. I never heard of em. except for the MP3 from sucked.down.net (when it was working) of Buzz (the Guitar player of the Melvins) playing on Stinkfist with TooL...which I didn't notice it detracting from the Song so I adopted the "whatevahz clevah" kinda attitude. MJK introduced the Melvins and they came on. I didn't start to appreciate there music till the 3rd song in there set (I think they played 8 songs). I guess Buzz (is his name?) mentioned something like the drummer was new. And well the last 4 or so songs I was impressed with the Drumming being pretty darn good, the whole band is pretty good. Time well spent waiting for TooL. TooL came on. After a Break that seemed to me an eternity. Danny took the stage followed by MJK (in A Dress with Fake Breasts to boot) and then Justin and Adam. They started with _Part_of_me_, and well I know what they played but not the exact order of the set list. so I'll do this for those who obsess with the songlist: Part Of Me Eulogy Stinkfist (Accompanied by Buzz of The Melvins on Guitar) H 46&2 Sober 3rd Eye Swamp Song [Encore] No Quarter Aenima MJK made some funny remarks. at one point he mentioned that the only way to truly enjoy a TooL Show was to be naked and have at least a hand in a hole and have your other hand on a Rod or in another hole. Another one was that TooL should be the soundtrack for people fucking, so when you are banging your girlfriend turn us on, something about Porno Theme Music too. Maynard introduced Stinkfist as a Love Song about a Deep Penetrating Love. Before No Quarter he had something on his chest about Pakistan I think...couldn't haer it over the crowd noise. After Aenima whilst Danny was throwing sticks and Adam Picks. Maynard told us all to watch to the screen for a special suprise. That Muzacked Lounge Style Version of Hooker with a Penis. Apparently they've made a video for it. its a Nude Women talking from her Pussy Lips singing the song. all the voices in the Chorus are spoken by Penises with mouths at the end of them. (Eyes are on the testicles). its quite hilarious and ironic at the same time. The stage was arranged with Danny's Drums on the Left, MJK right of the Drums and then Justin and Adam on the far right which is different then any other show I've been to where Adam was on the left MJK in the center in front of Danny and Justin on the right. One annoying thing was that they have these really bright green and Yellow lights they use for Aenima and they are just over powering...I found myself closing my eyes or turning my head throughout Aenima because of it. The Video Screen Stuff was cool but hasn't changed since the previous times (December 31 1995, October 28 1997, August 15&16 1997) I saw them. My Two Favorite Graphics the one with the Wave that Goes out and loops and then give the illisusion of going through a tunnel. And the Gears Meshing weren't used at this show. Nor were the Videos for Sober, Aenima, or Stinkfist shown while TooL played them. The Lighting was pretty decent...Sound was Very Good but the Venue has good sound the other times I've seen bands there. Anytime you can see TooL in your hometown and have a 5 minute drive home instead of a 4 hour Drive (last couple of times I've seen them in the Bay Area) is a good deal :)

Review written by: henry (Rdy2Rck@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/20/98 04:16:01 Well im fresh out of another pretty kick ass Tool show the concert was in the Reno Livestock events Center (Held where they usually hold some rodeo events) The accoustics were not that good and i think the Band Knew it..I was near the stage for the entire Melvins set, Tool came out and started off with "Part Of Me", They played it great.. they started into "eulogy" a radio song so then the crowd woke up...Too bad to because the ruckas got so bad that I couldnt enjoy the music..and because of this i had security lift me out.. the last thing i want to do is fight some inconsiderate jerks I just want to enjoy the show..so away i went..couldnt see Maynard as well but at least i wasnt getting fucked with.. anyways after Eulogy they played ( not neccisarily in this order mind you) "h","46&2","third Eye","Stinkfist","sober" A Led Zep cover song...and they ended with Aenima..This was my second time Seeing Tool and to tell you the truth i prefer an outside venue with these guys(doesnt get so damn Hot)...But i love their Music, and their show, id see them over and over again...

Review written by: fern (fernyture@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/20/98 03:50:48 This was my first tool concert ever, and I just gotta say that I'm so amazed. It has to be better than sex any day. i don't remember how many songs they played, but they definetly needed to play more...I noticed that they played songs that have been pl ayed out by the radio so it was kinda disappointing to not hear stuff from opiate and undertow. This concert was the best ever. It changed my life.
