Hey you! Read reviews already posted for your show to see if somebody already posted the setlist. They definitely played Third Eye in Kalamazoo. I have been going to concerts for 10 years now and I've seen a lot of bands, including Tool twice before, but I've never seen a show that came close to being as good as this one. I'll consider myself lucky if I see another as good in my lifetime.

i wrote this on the night of the concert, however this page was not working and i couldn't post it...so here it is... Ok, yeah i'm just glad i dont have to talk to post a review because i dont even have a voice left. Here is the CORRECT setlist, in order because i wrote them down as they were played...yes they played third eye, no kidding, unlike the other show where everyone said they did and they really didn't. pre grudge intro cold and ugly the grudge (-) ions stinkfist h. schism eon bluish intro parabol/a third eye --intermission-- disposition reflection triad lateralus WOW is all i have to say, when they started third eye i thought it was just gonna be a tease and they would go into ænima, but they kept playing and kept playing...and i needed a change of underwear afterwards. i saw earlier that they opened with cold and ugly but only once and i really hoped they would here and they did, i dont think i could have invented a better setlist myself. Triad along with third eye were the obvious highlights of the show for me. i think tool likes michigan for some reason, the last concert i went to in sept. 2001, they played the salivel version of pushit, now they play the salival version of third eye. damn. well i need to get some sleep for work tomorrow and would like to leave on this thought, they really did play third eye, and i know that everyone who reads this will be very skeptical, yes they did.

Great choice in Meshugah as an opener, awesome sound, very heavy. I thought some of those kids who shop at the gap were going to cry it was so loud. This was my thrd Tool show this year I it was definately the best yet. Each leg of the "Lateralus" tour has so far had different visuals, and stage show wich is much appreciated. For those in attendance we all saw the most amazing Third Eye that anyone has ever witnessed, and Triad blew everyone away (Meshugah's drummer did more for the song than tomahawks drummer did). Great show but please if the band dose read this, finish the tour, rest up, do some more studying, or self reflection, or whatever the hell it is you do to prepare to write music, and get back in the studio, I can't wait four more years for another Tool album.

This was this reviewer's damn Tool show

It's all summarized in three words, HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!! As always, I was speechless, and it would have been the greatest night of my life minus the fat/hairy guys without shirts and some asshole that spit in my hair, lol. Adam seemed to really step up with the solos in "Cold and Ugly" and "Third Eye", as well as Parabola. But I'd like to thank Tool for being creative, original and giving me hope for the world. It's comforting to witness a sign of individualism in a world doing its best to make you everyone else. I was far in the back, disappointingly standing right in front of a red light for the bar, but it was all so clear and quite spectacular. Thanks to Tool and I hope to see them come back to Michigan to open some eyes and hopefully some minds as well.

yea, late to the post but great show. The loudest show I have seen them put on but a damn good one. I loved the set list and the new movies. wish i could make the other MI show, but with any luck there will be more shows to see in the future. I like the new croud they are getting. I sat next to a 9 year old kid and he said it was his 3rd show. Nice to know that the word is still spreading about the power of a tool show!

Okay, looking above, you can see the number of TOOL shows I've now had the fortune of feeling/hearing/seeing. That said, TOOL always gives it their all for K-Zoo. Anybody who has seen them before at wings stadium knows this. So that's a heads up. IF TOOL ever tours again and comes to wings stadium.......SEE THEM. Tonight was no disappointment. What's that you've been saying?????? No third eye, none of their older stuff is being played.........uhhhhh, wrong! At least tonight! Once they opened w/ Cold & Ugly you knew immediately it was going to be an extraordinary evening. So after teasing us for sooooooo long, we finally were treated to THIRD EYE!!! TOOL never fails to make each show unique, most probably realize this, especially if you're here, reading this post now. The setlist from the top of my memory and I'm not sure where the segues were exactly, some mantra, some ions and some other jams: Cold and Ugly The Grudge Stinkfist H. Schism Parobol Parabola Third Eye Intermission Disposition Reflection Triad Lateralus This should be correct, please add to if I'm incorrect in my recalling of this. If you're reading this and have never seen Tool, you really shouldn't be shortchanging yourself. See them before they pine away......... Thanks guys, your art DOES make a difference.

I posted this already in the review area for the show on the 15th, since this form was down. But here it is again: Here's the setlist. Cold & Ugly The Grudge Stinkfist H. Schism Parabol Parabola THIRD EYE ------------- Disposition Reflection Triad Lateralis Greatest live band ever. No joke. Meshuggah, on the other hand ... eh. At least their drummer was respectable. If the lead singer would have sung differently on at least two songs, then maybe I'd have more respect. But every song sounded the same. Onto Tool, who fucking blew the roof off the place. I was sitting about 5 or 6 rows up, and the fight circles looked insane. But enough about that. Tool played Third Eye. Nothing is better than that, And opening with Cold & Ugly, wow. Probably the best setlist this year. Of course, the D/R/T trilogy was great. And so were all the other songs. Thanks to the others in the front of the line (fellow obsessive Tool fans) who helped us shout at Richard and call Andy Brooks a homo. Oh, and yelled for free shit (basically just Jason). So fucking great. If Tool's coming to your city, go see them. No excuses could possibly be accepted.

TRIAD was awsome!!!! i never thought that it would sound so perfect live, only TOOL could pull it off. only 2 complaints about the near perfect show: -too many people packed on the floor (not TOOL's fault) -the inflatable black ballon floatie things were cheesy other than that, show rocked, almost better than the Van Andel show last year. TOOL gets better every time i see them, they truely are today's Pink Floyd. if anyone got a recording/vidoe of the show, email me, i would love to see/hear it.

Another kick ass show What a killer show. It was the best of the 3 I've seen sofar this year imo. Maynard obviously used time off to rest vocal cords,as his voice was strong tonight. Maynard stripped down to undies sometime between H and schism, I think, which usually is an indication that Maynard and band are having a good night. Ok, enough about my personal opinions for now. On to the thing everybody wants to know about. The setlist (may have been in a slightly different order, but all listed were played tonight.) Cold and Ugly !!!!! The Grudge Stinkfist H Schism Parabol/a Third Eye !!!! Intermission d/r/t (w coupla meshuggah guys on triad) Lateralus I'm glad to see that band obviously incorporated the info they gathered from us on which song we would like to see performed. Maynardisms Maynard said repeated Kalamazoo several times. Then said something about Grand Rapids. Gave usual speech about living in trying times /think for yourself/question authority before 3rd eye. gave a variation of the take something positive home speech before Lateralus, also in which he said something like he hoped we didn't masterbate on the way home and have an accident, and sitting in front of fire and have sex, preferably with another person. Danny was wearing his basketball jersey, and was absolutely killer during the show, especially during 3rd eye, and unfortunately I couldn't see much of Justin and Danny from my place on the floor, but the band sounded really good tonight, so I'm assuming they were having a good night as well.I didn't watch videos very much, I concentrated on the stage as i was at 2 shows in sept. and the videos seemed to have stayed pretty much the same. At the beginning of 3rd eye they played Bill Hicks and timothy Leary samples. The video screen had Leary headshot in flames synched with leary sample, then was mostly reall cool abstract stuff. The lighting seemed brighter than previous shows, but that may be accounted for in the fact that venue was so small the lights were much closer to the stage. In fact you could only see about half the backdrop Grey art and the sacred mirrors hung down to almost head level. I was very glad I went to Kalamazoo. Wings stadium was a nice venue. Pretty good sound, was a small place, and the crowd was for the most part very well mannered. I had an amazing time, it was great fun hanging out with Mario and Dustin again, and I can't wait for Indy monday. For all those who weren't sure if they wanted to go to another show after seeing them already this year, i have only one thing to say. JUST GO!!!

This was this reviewer's shit Tool show

Well i must say that I thought the show was going to be cool but after it got started I quickly got angry.First off they changed the setlist to a much shittier setlist (most of all no sober). Then when the played triad i fell asleep. The thing that probably pissed me off the most though was probably that all I could see of Maynard were his feet.He was way back by the drums so i couldn't see shit.Of course if he got his ass down to the front of the stage I would have been able to see him.O and Meshugah was horrible they as far as i can tell have only one song that they play over and over again.

This was this reviewer's 2nd Tool show

Dear Tool fans, I won't bore you with the setlist, because I honestly didn't pay attention, and someone else will probably post it after me, so we'll get it anyway. But since there has been some controversey, Third Eye and H. were both played at this show, so don't even try to say they weren't played. If you don't know what I'm talking about, read the reviews for a few shows ago. Anyway.. Meshuggah: I saw you last year open for Tool. And last year, I thought you sucked. Not much has changed. Oh well. Still, the earplugs that I bought during your set were worth it. They saved my hearing for Tool, and they only cost a dollar! On to Tool.... Well folks.... I walked away amazed and dazed again. I really want to sincerely thank the members of Tool and their crew for all the hard work they put in to entertain us for a night. I could tell that they enjoyed it as much as we did, and for that I am thankful. The music was flawless, but I have to say, the acoustics in Wings Stadium are not up to par. I heard a lot of echoes in the high range, but then again, I'm picky, so who cares? It was a surprise to hear H. and Third Eye, since it seems that they rarely play it. This was a nearly perfect show, and the best part is, I got to see them with my girlfriend, who bought the tickets for me for my birthday. Have a good night Tool fans, and drive safely. MrBoxx

Meshuggah's Set -Sane Me -New Song off of Nothing -Fourth Song off Nothing -New Millinium Cyanide Christ -Second Song off Nothing -Soulburn -Future New Breed sorry i don't name the song titles from Nothing yet, order is pretty close. anyone that knocks Meshuggah is obviously not a musician, or a narrow-minded one. but then again many knocked Tomahawk, Tricky, Melvins, and Fantomas, whom are spectacular as well.

This was this reviewer's 5th Tool show

Everyone wants to see a set list, so here is what I can recall. Feel free to make corrections as necessary. Cold And Ugly The Grudge Stinkfist [Extended] H Schism Parabol Parabola Third Eye [Intermission] Disposition Reflection Triad Lateralus ...And just to clear up speculation, the Third Eye part of the set list is not a joke, not a fake, and not a lie. The first time since '98...if memory serves...? [Complete Show Synopsis] Meshuggah was alright. Better than the two times I have seen them previously. Perhaps they are growing on me a bit. They will have one more opportunity to imprint themseles in my memory in Lansing. Not too shabby guys. Anyway...about this band that was there called Tool... In the iterim between Meshuggah and Tool a handful of the truly intelligent fans began the chant of "cock cock cock." A fan standing next to me said "Hey, they found their cocks. Good for them." I'm glad someone made a sarcastic comment so I didn't have to. Another thing that bothered me was that people throughout the show were deterred from the music by the mere possibility that the girls on their male counterpart's shoulders might display their breasts. Talk about knowing whether your priorities lie within the physical or spiritual realm. In any case...on to the actual sequence of events. There are always those people who think that they have to be right up against the rail or in a mosh pit in front of the stage to enjoy a concert. Tonight these people missed out on the visuals that were on two large screens on either side of the stage. No huge screen behind the whole band, or small screen in front of Maynard, as has been the stage setup for past performances. This configuration was effective, but I had positioned myself to the right side and had to look away from the band to view the screen above me. Oh well, I suppose that is the point of the visuals...to distract attention from the band and onto the musical experience. I tried my best to balance both views. I am not quite sure how this phenomenon works, but it seems to hold true for every concert I see from the floor. The only people who are over 6'2 in height choose to stand, as a human wall, in front of me. Why is this? It is rather frustrating even though it is my own fault for putting myself in that position. But what is a concert if you aren't on the floor. Especially Tool, for some reason I just need to be close to other people. My consolation was that, in the back of my head, I knew after the wildness that was sure to ensue during the first song would move the individuals blessed with exceptional stature. The opening with Cold And Ugly was quite intense. This is a song that shows up from time to time, but is usually supplanted with Opiate. It was by far the roughest song of the evening as the numerous people who had attempted to defy the laws of nature and cram themselves into the front of the floor area were now attempting to escape this churning, shifting, sweltering death trap. One person in particular was trying to get his girlfriend out of there, so I happily directed them to the stairs (they were headed in the wrong direction). The less people in the way the better. It settled down after that. Maynard took a moment to say hello to everyone. He asked how everyone was. After the cheering died down a bit he replied with a simple contemplative "interesting". The Grudge was...well...The Grudge. It has become a staple of any live performance following the release of Lateralus. Gotta love that scream and the chants of "let go". Perfect for the start of a Tool show. Stinkfist is always good with the added verse and extended bridge. It will probably continually fool those that try to sing along but are not aware of its existance. The crowd was very active and into the song. Gotta love those "old" favorites. H was a surprise since they had already played Stinkfist. The shows have focused on Lateralus with a dab of the other releases. Two Ænima tracks in a row...hmm... Nonetheless, H holds a special place in my heart and emotions. It was a wonderful experience, putting me near tears and entranced by the visual of a snake-like creature devouring itself. Simply fantastic. Now the show reaches an interesting point. The band begins to play a small sort of jam, first with hints of the The Patient, then proceeding to hints of Parabol. Finally, Schism begins. Once Schism has been completed, there is a short pause and then Parabol/Parabola begin. Why was this so interesting? Well, Schism is clearly a reference to communication. Perhaps the teases of other songs, which preceeded Schism itself was a reference to the theme of the song? Miscommunication? I guess we'll never know...just an idea. The spinning "cancer balls" (as they have come to be called) on stage were impressive. Simple, yet an effective way to bring the Parabol/Parabola video to the live show. It added an element of...urgency...for lack of a better term. Schism, Parabol, and Parabola all had an interesting effect on me. There was a certain feeling of duality standing there with all those people shoulder to shoulder. It felt as if I should be connecting to these people more, and yet at the same time so many of them seemed to be faceless to my mind's eye. How well can one be expected to connect with the faceless(/soulless?). Maynard then addresses the crowd a second time. This time he says (basically) "We know that you have heard this from us before, but hopefully you will really hear it now, especially in this time of political and social instability. Think for yourself. Question authority. Think for yourself. Question authority". I had heard of and read of there being teases to Third Eye played occasionally. When the song started I was a bit skeptical at first. Even after both the Bill Bicks (from Ænima) and Timothy Leary (from Salival) samples were played, I was half-expecting them to stop. But they kept going. Very very unexpected. Very very amazing. Hardly sounded as if it had been 4 years since it was last played (if it has, in fact, been that long - I cannot be certain). The intermission was next. Would you like another self- perceived irony? Of course you would. Red, (white?), and blue lights amid a fair amount of smoke. Another reference to what had been said? Or someone "overthinking, overanalyzing"? This is exactly why I love Tool. You can't be sure. There is a certain humbled feeling in not knowing quite for certain. Are they serious, trying to make a point, or just fucking with you? Heh... If you care enough to want to know, you try to learn for yourself. It is hard to grow effectively by having others tell you how. Fresh from their break, Tool broke into the 20 minute plus Disposition/Reflection/Triad. Although at first I found it slightly difficult to get back into the music following the break, but that epic "song" as a whole is rather easy to slip into. The band started off standing rather close together. One of the most interesting events/observations... During the late stages of Reflection a couple of shirtless neanderthals were apparently displeased with the lack of violence being perpetrated on an otherwise content crowd. They decided it was time to have a mosh pit. I disdain this activity at Tool shows. Especially so blatant an attempt to start it. The two men were trying to start a pushing and shoving match with anyone on the edge of their little "pit" but one was squarely knocked on his ass by someone much larger who was standing on the edge. They persisted, and as the tribal drumming of Triad began, I had an odd sense of evolution. As I looked into the hole in the crowd at the two sweaty, shirtless men, pushing each other, throwing themselves into the people standing on the edge, and rolling on the dirty, sticky, wet floor together, I could think of nothing but an image of cavemen doing the same thing, coupled with the thought of "so this is how far we have come..." And I began laughing hysterically. What started out as a grin blossmed into a chuckle and ballooned into outright hysteria. Quite a release actually. Sometimes I am embarassed to be a human. But I take so much perverse interest in humanity's behavior. Maynard addressed the crowd one final time. He thanked everyone for coming, made a comment something to the effect of "I hope you have had a good time and have enjoyed this moment we have shared...before you leave and masturbate yourself into oblivion." This was followed by "You should all go home tonight, put a log on the fire, (something else), and have sex. Have someone do it with you. It will be more exciting that way." He again thanked everyone for coming and listening, and then they launched into Lateralus. I was all too happy to expend the last bit of my voice singing appropriate parts of the song directly at the moshers. "Keep going..." A long period of applause followed. I was content to clap, as I find it more polite (as opposed to raise the "more metal than thou" sign via fingers) until the whole band had left the stage. They were having fun throwing water bottles, drum sticks, and the like to the crowd. As a whole, the concert was a wonderful success. I was very pleased with the musical closeness the band played with (especially since they were working with a less than admirable venue for sound quality), as well as the new visuals that were present. The unveiling artwork was also impressive. I am left with a feeling of exhaustion. It was the humbling period of self discovery, the emotional catharsis, that all Tool shows are. Thanks to those two tall guys on the edge of the pit knocking neanderthals on their asses. No thanks to whoever threw the beer cup that clipped my shoulder (it wasn't totally empty! [Countless concerts and that had never happened before]). Most thanks of course goes to the band itself. Thank you Adam, Danny, Justin, and Maynard. You continue to tour like madmen, put on a quality show, and (somehow) tolerate the mass of people that miss the point. That is dedication and perseverence. Thanks again! See you in Lansing! yes, they played third eye. outstanding show. i drove 300 miles to see it, and in hindsite would have driven twice that far to experience what i saw in kalamazoo last nite. the venue was a little overboard on the outside security. they herded you into long lines to be admitted in small groups to the screening area, all the while listening to a recording of how intense the search was going to be, only to be patted down by a couple 16 year olds. inside, security was more like social security, and if you werent smoking pot, you were 1 of about 10 people. tool opened with cold and ugly, followed by the grudge. the band appeared to be in peak form, maynard was writhing and contorting and provided 20+ seconds of the primal scream from grudge i so dearly missed at the quad cities show. cold and ugly was a much better opener than sober had been, an excellent lead in to grudge. the band then played an altered version of stinkfist that added even more anticipation to the songs peaks. then they dropped the h bomb, followed by an altered version of schism that was also brilliant. parabol/parabola followed, and then maynard began to prep the crowd for what was coming up on the end of the show. as he began the "think for yourself..." i noticed the background music was eluding to third eye, then it happened. for the next 14 minutes tool dispensed a sensory assault i cant even find words to describe. the voice effects, the grinding machine noise, the relentless drumming. i needed the 10 minute intermission just to pull myself together. they came back to play d/r/t and lateralus, which was incredible as well. can anything rock harder than triad, and lateralus is a perfect closer. what else can i say, maynard is fucking bad. adam and justin are fucking bad. danny is without equal. do not miss this tour at all costs. thanx for the great show guys.

This was this reviewer's 7 Tool show

Kalamazoo, MI, USA Wings Stadium Maynardism: "Kalamazoo? Sounds way more like Grand Rapids. Kalamazoo? Interesting..." Intro I Intro II Cold & Ugly The Grudge (-) Ions Stinkfist (Suspicious Minds) H. Schism (Intro) Schism Parabol Parabola Third Eye (Bill Hicks sample); (Dr. Timothy Leary speach) -intermission- Disposition Reflection Triad Lateralus This show was the 2nd time they played Third Eye this tour & the 3rd time for Cold & Ugly. The moring after; it is now Oct. 19, 2002. This was the first time I stood this close to the stacks of speakers at a Tool show & was the 7th time of partaking in Tool's live experience. The other microphones I was using could not handle the frequencies & would have, definitely, brickwalled severely. As it is, CSBs are absloutley great mics; you get what you pay for. My only regret is not having these mics before. As for the show, it was really good. The best show I've seen since the State Theatre show back in 05.18.01. Actual energy, an altered setlist & excellent sound made this special -- also being in a new location. I was unable to see any of the visuals being so close but had a perfect view of (in order): Adam, Justin & Danny. MJK was partially obscured but who cares, anyway? Adam really is an excellent musician; focused. Thought about going to the right side of the speakers to get a view but there were loads of screaming people yelling 'Maynard' so there was no way I wanted to do that. Place I had was great anyway, other than a few moshers & screamers on only two occasions, I consider myself lucky --> got great sound and minimal scarring from the crowd. As for Meshuggah, they are way better than I remember them being last year.. Now I at least have an idea of why Tool asked them for openers. During the last 3 minutes of Lateralus, I fought my way back to the sound-booth. Talked to the sound-engineer & he handed me a setlist. Asked him a few questions; two of which I will relay here. The first is that Tool pick out the songs they want to play the day of the show. Second, I asked him why Brixton Academy in London got such an odd setlist the two nights of 2002, & he said 'oh, I don't know about that mate, but we did end up spilling two pints on the board' (pointing to the sound-board).

this was down the day of the show, and earlyer today. YES THEY PLAYED THIRD EYE (im listening to the AEnima version as I type this) HOLY SHIT THAT WAS GREAT! to sum it up short and sweet: loved the set list. damn loude. glade to have ear plugs or i would be deaf. *Kalamazoo, sounds way more like grand rapids, Kalamazoo. interesting*. I about shit myself at that show. my ears still hurt. Meshuggah SUCKED (imo, just screaming and noise). best show ever. damn smokers. why did the speakers have to cover up half the stage? Triad was amazing, just flat out amazing. TOOL is my god! i need a recording of it, e-mail me if you have on of that show. OH MY GOD THIRD EYE WAS PLAYED! *shivers.... masterbates to the memory of it* jon32@aol.com: i want to know the same thing, I though "message to harry manback" was kindof anti-smoking, but then again, i coudln't understand half of the english part. TOOL COME BACK OT SOUTH WEST MICHIGAN! what the show really that good? AMAZING! i didnt know 3rd eye was so rare. I NEED A RECORDING OF IT!!!!! WOW, amazing, Tool is at the top of thier game, or just getting better after 11+ years, I hope they continue to get better and better. thanks for the complete setlist ryuu's pointless rant

Can you say 3rd eye! What a birthday present. Holy shit that was bad. I wonder if they played it because of the rumors. And I read the reveiws from colorado and saw they opened with cold and ugly and I did'nt think it would happen ever again, but it did! I would rate this show the 3rd best show of the 10 I have saw. Its great to see TooL in a smaller venue again. It was definately worth the 4 hour drive to Michigan. You guys in Michigan know what's up, great energy. Hope to see some of you in Tooledo weds. -Spiral out- P.S. On several occasions I heard people saying that Maynard was from Michigan. All who said that are fucking stupid.

My friend and I made it to Wings Stadium, after a very slight period of getting a LITTLE lost. Not even LOST, necessarily...more like turned around. We were early, and god bless general admission, we got STUPENDOUS seats right on stage left. (which is the right hand side of the audience) We both complained about not being able to afford the shirts, because they were SO incredibly kickin'. But i must live within my means, and 35 for a T is NOT within my means. Meshuggah finally took the stage...Last time I saw TOOL at the Palace, I was blessed with extremelely good box seats. I remembered why we sat in the box seat last time i saw meshuggah opening for TOOL. Swedish death metal is not my cup of tea. They may be talented, but the music is simply boring to me. If i wasn't laughing, I had my eyes closed, mentally going somewhere more pleasant than the drivel onstage. And then...TOOL. :) I was expecting Sober for the opener. Instead..."Cold and Ugly!" COLD AND UGLY! I had heard they used it once or twice this tour, but wasn't really expecting it. Great way to open. Next was "The Grudge," as usual. So intense...had me bouncing like a madman the entire time. Then came Stinkfist. I was praying we would get the extended version, and oh, we did. I was able to figure out exactly WHICH Elvis lyrics maynard uses in the new part, finally: "I'm caught in a trap/I can't walk out/Because I love you too much, baby." The new bridge just...rocked me. The beautiful sounds of "H" came next, with one of my favorite videos: that of the snake continually eating itself. The new intro to "Schism," which came next, was painfully reminiscent of "Pushit." For a few seconds, my heart almost stopped because i thought "Pushit" was coming. However, it was not to be, and we were blessed with "Schism." Maynard exited for a moment and came back in his skivvies, which is typically indicative of the band enjoying the crowd, i think. Oh, he had a black stripe painted up the middle of his face and head. I was really hoping for some cross-dressing, but I know it's not too common these days, what with "AEnima" not being the guys' major focus anymore. Next was a thorougly moving "Parabol," crescendoing into a rocked out "Parabola." The video for "Parabola" is absolutely my favorite. Beautiful. The ending with the chakra points, the flower of life, and the character's spiritual awakening are inspiring, to say the least. Maynard then proceeded to give a little speech about "questioning authority" and "thinking for yourself," in these "politically and socially trying times," which was expected, but still appreciated. Also expected was that the guys would then proceed to "Opiate" or "AEnema." 'Cause that's how they typically do things. Not the case. A whooshing sound came out of the speakers, and I thought, "Heh heh. That sounds like the opening to 'Third Eye.' Heh heh." Then I waited for "Opiate" or "AEnema." It was 'Third Eye.' They played it. Oh, my god. It began with the Bill Hicks intro from "AEnima," then moved to the Timothy Leary intro from "Salival." And it wasn't shortened at all. All fucking 15 minutes + of it were played. The video at the beginning was actually Timothy Leary speaking, of course colored strangely. The video was naturally pretty psychadelic, featuring the "Lateralus" man (profile with hand raised) quite a bit. My friend later told me that I started jumping up and down when i realized what song it was. I don't remember, but I'm sure I did. Prying open my third eye. Intermission came next. Time for me to sit down and let it sink in that i just heard "third eye" live. I don't think a lot of the people around me knew it was intermission... They came back in after about fifteen minutes. New Alex Grey backdrop and five-pointed star hanging in the back. Unfortunately, our view was slightly obstructed, so we couldn't exactly see everything perfectly. Disposition/Reflection/Triad were next. As beautiful as ever. "Triad" featured two members of "Meshuggah," and was even more intense than the last time I saw it, at Cobo.. Justin, like last time, shed his stoicism during this song and actually seemed to be REALLY getting into it. Maynard has his little guitar-thingy, which i am still convinced he doesn't really play. lol. Every few minutes, it seems that he strums something, but that's about it. The Alex Grey progression of the body into spiritual energy murals came down during "Refelction," I believe. Again, we could only see a few from our position. The conclusion was of course, "Lateralus." Maynard's mini- stage spun again, which creates a tremendous effect for the "spiral out" part. It is pretty apparent that the guys REALLY like that song, and view it as mightily important to the audience and a central part of their currrent message. They stayed on the stage for a little while afterward, clapping for us, bowing, and getting into the group hug. Threw out some water bottles, drum sticks, and frisbees. A frisbee came close, but not quite close enough. Ah, well. Such a magnificent experience. Even the audience wasn't THAT bad. There was a point before the bands started that some sluts that it would be appropriate to flash their tits, much to the babboons on the floor's appreciation. Come on. Have a little respect for yourself and the situation. And the vulgar middle-school punks behind us were annoying, BUT...overall...well-behaved crowd. People still tried moshing, which always amazes me. Especially during something like "Disposition" or "Lateralus." Dumbfounding. And i was happy to bring my friend, a fledging TOOL fan, because she absolutely loved it. (We realized on the drive home from KZoo the next day that we had been periodically discussing the concert for almost 2 1/2 hours.) Please e-mail me, anyone, if any audio/visual recording went on. And also, please e-mail me if you are a TOOL fan who would just like to chat, 'cause i'm always up for some intelligent banter about the greatest band on Earth.

I was blown away, as I expected. The visuals were awesome. The drums in Triad were absolutely incredible! It seemed that the atmosphere was more ambient than the show I saw last year, which was cool. Disposition/Reflection has been my favorite song for quite some time now, and it did not disappoint. Starting the show with Cold & Ugly was really enjoyable. Third Eye was one of the high points of the concert. Rrrrrrrrrrreal fuckin high on drugs. I liked how the vocals were modified in parts of that song and in one or two others by a megaphone-type thing. My one complaint is for the sound tech guys - the guitar levels should have been a bit higher - there were times when I couldn't hear the guitar riff at all, such as the distinctive opening notes to H. Also, there was some sporadic squealing and feedback where there shouldn't have been. I love the band's group hug at the end of the show - I think more performers should do that. Tool, fucking Tool

This was the best show I've seen. I was in the very back of the arena... it allowed me to sit, observe, appreciate and totally enjoy the music without worrying about which clueless, meathead-mosher would rub up on me next... Those 2 hours Friday night... are the 2 best of my life. I feel very fortunate to have been there. Every time I think about the concert, my heart, soul, mind and face all smile. Wish I could've seen 4 degrees, which they played the following night in Erie. I feel 4 degrees is the most amazingly written "song" (lyrically) ever done. If you disagree, it's probably due to the Fact that You Don't Understand the meaning and perspective it's meant to be perceived from. Tool, thank you.

This was this reviewer's 1st Tool show

I want to thank Keith B. for a wonderful recount of the events of Friday, October 18th. I was there too, I'm an artist from northern Indiana who had expected the world of this, my first Tool concert ever. And did they deliver it to me? Yessir! They did! Maynard's final comments, as Keith had mentioned, were: "...put a log on the fire, watch Caligula, and have sex...". This brought a huge smile to my face, as I pulled my significant other closer to me. A certain sense of disappointment came over me as I knew that the show was coming soon to a close, but as the band started into Lateralus, I realized that the experience would stay with me a lifetime. I was somewhat concerned witht the behavior of the crowd. You see, this particular venue does serve beer in nice unsturdy paper cups, mixed with your inbred hick who came to see Tool simply because they are 'metal'.. let's just say I had expected alot worse. The crowd was, for the most part, seemingly passive from my viewpoint, which was about dead center on the floor. The most turbulent song had to have been Stinkfist, the crowd went nuts, and you could feel it. I almost cried when they started into H. I was standing next to a guy, who was steadfast in not letting anyone else stand in front of him. He told me that this was his 9th Tool show and also admitted that he had dropped before the show. Needless to say, he was really, really into the music, not so much the visual effects because he had his back turned to the stage, but very contented with just taking in the music. I found myself taking in the music myself, singing along with Maynard, and this guy! A weird sorta thing, but at the same time, an analogy of Tool bringing people together, just like this site does for the intelligent-minded Tool fans. I had never seen the Parabola video before this night, a sight that I had really looked forward to. Along with the live performance, the video, featuring Alex Grey's phenomenal artwork just blew me away. The ambience and the spiritual transcending of this song was like a beautiful ritual for the entire crowd to partake. Like any Tool fan, I was ecstatic when Maynard said those words: "Think for yourself, Question Authority". I too thought perhaps it was only a tease, but the deliverance of Third Eye proved to be my undoing. It was unbelievable, the band gave their all and I was there to take it in! Amazing. Those who went know... Did anyone see the flaming sweater fly throught the floor crowd? Another fine example of the many morons that did attend. The show was great. The band sounded amazing, and you can see the comradery among the members of the band, especially as they gathered at Danny's drum set at the end of the show, just before Lateralus. At the very close, I thought that it was very warm that the band stayed onstage to sorta 'say goodbye' to the crowd. Most bands throw their equipment down, or destroy it and storm off the stage. Tool, what a show! Thanks for the memories, guys! I just want to add that if there are any likeminded individuals in the area who might like to keep a correspondence, I welcome and appreciate your emails. Tool's music is a major influence, not only in my artwork, but also in my daily life and studies. Somewhat an amateur occult student, Tool provides it's influence in my arcane practices as well... Again, thanks to Tool, and the crowd for sharing the experience with me. Dennis A.

This was this reviewer's 3rd Tool show

I just got back from my third Tool concert and this one was better than the other two. Even though most of the songs were the same as the other shows that I've seen, they just seem to have a lot more energy and the band seems to be really enjoying themselves right now like when Danny let Adam and Justin throw out some of the souveneirs to the crowd. Plus all the subtle changes in the songs as they progress are worth hearing them again. Meshuggah wasn't entirely awful. I saw them open for Tool last year so I bought Chaosphere and when I heard they were opening this time around I bought Nothing hoping to learn their new songs. It's really pointless to try though. Even after hearing all of their songs several times, I still couldn't tell the difference between them live. I won't say I was disappointed, but I wasn't really impressed. As for Tool, of course I thought they were great. The most important thing though was that my dad liked them. I talked my wife into seeing them in Detroit a couple weeks ago and she loved it so much that we bought tickets to both the Kalamazoo and Lansing shows and we managed to talk my dad into coming to this one. He didn't really like Meshuggah that much but he sounded genuinly impressed with Tool. The concert was great. As I said earlier, the best one I've seen. I'm kind of kicking myself for reading the last two sets of review though. Had I gone into this show not knowing that they may or may not have played third eye the other day and that they did play cold & ugly and third eye at the last show, when when I heard Bill Hicks through the speakers, I would have completely flipped out. It was great to hear those two songs though, especially since they haven't played them in so long. Third eye is such an amazing song live. I liked Cold & ugly better as an opener than Sober too. It starts the show off with a bang. I liked Triad with Meshuggah's drummer a little better than with Tomahawk's drummer also. Again, unbelievable show. It looks like all the people complaining about the set lists can hush up since they made some awfully big changes this time around. The only good thing about having to leave this show was knowing that we're going to see them again in two days. Sorry for the long review and for not posting a set list. Everybody else seems to have too much fun posting their own anyway. Another great show and just one more reason why Tool is the greatest band ever.

I would just like to thank Tool for experiencing the best concert I've ever seen w/me. I had a blast and I'm sure I wasn't the only one. It was on my friends 22nd b-day (lucky bastard) and most of the people standing in line waiting to get in contributed to singing happy birthday. It was fuckin' hilarious. After the seven of us entered the building we just split up, occasionally seeing each other in the beer line. I ended up watching the show w/my buddy and 2 adorable stoner chicks.(Fuck Yeah). I couldn't believe my ears hearing Tool open with Cold and Ugly. I have just started reading these concert reviews and how these people are arguing what they played and what they didn't. It's kinda wierd that there would be any speculation of what they played a day after they have already played it which leads me to the fact that I loved hearing Third Eye and H. After driving around for awhile after the concert looking for De-Ja- Vu, we decided to head home. Once we got back(I drove) only the person sitting shotgun woke up. We were in the driveway safely at home so I decided to leave the door open thinking they would get cold and come in. Well...........the last one got out about 5:30 a.m. and I laughed my ass off the next day when he told me that a cat had gotten into the van overnight and shit all over the place. It just seemed like there was alot of energy that night all the way around. Thanks Tool and I can't wait to see you once again........

Hello. I am writing to you from Ludington Michigan. The show was very well done this time. I had a good time with some friends of mine listening to one of the best bands to ever come out of this world. I have issues, however, with some of the tool fans. Most of you all look the same. Trying to be outcasts by wearing black and trying to look different. I see more unity and "sameness" in that than anything else. It's just like the punk movement. People were trying to be different. In a way....that is making you the same as everyone else. I find it very odd that when Jim (maynard) says "think for yourselves....question authority" that everyone acts like a clone of eachother. Most of you repeat that over and over and cheer when Jim says it on stage. I think that, for those of you who went to the Tool show @ G.R. in Sept. 2001, you need to remeber the little trick Jim played on you. -side note- there was one guy who, during the awesome intermission, kept screaming "Tool! Tool! What the fuck?!? Play some 'Hooker with a penis'. These are the exact drones I'm talking about.

OK, I have to start off by saying I wasn't at this show. HOWEVER, I believe I have some new information for this show, or at least something that hasn't been posted yet. Just so you all know, the "non-Tool" song/intro that the boys did was the intro to "Limelight" by Rush. In case you didn't know, Rush is a Canadian band that's been around for almost 30 years, and they've had a huge influence on Tool. Since Rush is my favourite band (Tool is a close 2nd!), I would have killed to have heard them open with Limelight, even if for a few seconds. Consider yourselves all lucky, and if anybody's interested in hearing more Rush (or you've got a bootleg of that show :) ), just drop me a line. Take care.
