A Review of the Fall 1996 Tour

Date: November 30

From: Val (jgoodman@wchat.on.ca) Subject: TOOL at the Warehouse, Toronto 11/30/96 Status: O All I have to say is that tool is one of the best bands, I've ever had the pleasure of seeing live. They are intense, deep, and full of meaning which leaves you asking yourself questions, that sometimes could never be answered. The opening band (Psychotica) were really good. Their music was really heavy, and the lead singer had a voice kinda like Marilyn Manson. I was surprised that they were so good, cos people were saying they suck and shit, so I didn't think they sucked and tool picked a good band to open for them. After Psychotica left, there was a long period of waiting for tool. After about a half and hour, people started getting rowdy and started to push and shove people. All of a sudden, the lights went out and the images on the screen behind the stage were the cover of Aenima. The music that was playing, was really weird, and trippy. When tool walked out, everyone was going off the wall, of course I was too. Maynard was half blue, half white with boxer shorts on, half blue, half white, which made him look naked. Adam was painted all blue, and Justin was all white sporting his little horns. Adam I guess dedcided to not join in on the painting. Maynard came to the mic and just stared out into the crowd, then he held up his arm and gave us a peace sign, everyone screamed and did it back to Maynard, like some sort of salute. Maynard's voice was in PERFECT shape, nothing wrong with it in my opinion. Anyway, they started with Third Eye, not a good opener, but they played it very well. After Third Eye, Maynard introduced us to Justin "this is Justin our new bass player. He's from the Polish part of Scotland" Justin ignoledged us with his beer, and they drove into Stinkfist. Here is the exact set list: Third Eye Stinkfist Forty Six & 2 Cold and Ugly Eulogy Prison Sex Pushit H Sober Opiate Anema Before Prison Sex, Maynard said the usual about that song. He said something like "it's about facing that psycho in you, and beating it down." Also he said "this song caused a bit of contraversy on MuchMusic" the whole crowd was saying "FUCK MUCHMUSIC!!" it was quite funny, and Maynard said he didn't understand why they wouldn't play the vid. When they played Prison Sex, they showed on the screen parts of the vid and prison bars. There were elephants fucking, and lots of skeletons. Some monkeys, a camal on its back, and some weird lights and stuff. Before H he said the same thing about the Warner Bros. cartoons, he said that life isn't that easy and that this song is about making that decision for yourself. I was kinda disappointed that they didn't play Hooker With A Penis, but that was made up for by them playing Cold And Ugly. I was going crazy, that's one of my favourite songs. There was the most wicked jam before Sober, it really shone on Danny, he is amazing. Adam had his Gibson Les Paul right at the PA and Maynard was growling. After Opiate Maynard said quietly "goodnight" the crowd said "no!" then Maynard said "goodbye" the crowd said "no!" and they all got in a huddle before Danny's drum set, Maynard came back to the mic and said "ok we'll play one more" and they blasted into Anema. I would say that the best song of the night was Forty Six & 2, being one of my favourite songs. I was very surprised how tool sounds exactly like their cds. In between songs Maynard would just stop still and stare at the crowd. And before Anema he stopped and did the peace sign salute again, we all did it back, like we were saluting our master. And in a way, I think we were. ****************************** *why can't I decide * *why my feelings I hide? * *always screwing with my mind* *a thorn in my spine * ****************************** ~~~~~~~~~~~~KORN~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "of course you don't have to do it if you don't want to, it's just a suggestion to make your experience more pleasurable for you"--Daniel Johns *SiLvErChAiR*
