A Review of the Fall 1996 Tour

Date: December 3

From: "David Conklin" (conklin@bobafet.nrl.navy.mil) Subject: Dec. 3, DC show review After all the previous reviews, there is not much I can add, but here are a few little interesting tidbits: GENERAL IMPRESSIONS The show lived up to my high expectations...the music was intense and perfectly executed, and Maynard's voice was right on. COLLECTED MAYNARD QUOTES referring to the "L" shaped layout of the Capital Ballroom: "is that the x-ray vision section over there?" before Pushit: "Have you ever been in a relationship where you loved this person so much, but it was so horribly wrong that you had to kill them. Me neither." about Justin: "this is Justin ... he's from a small French quadrant of Poland" before Aenema: (a little sketchy on this one) "alright, alright, alright. You know a lot of people think this song is about catastrophes and things like that...It's about getting back to what really matters. It's about diving into the pool of the collective unconscious and learning to swim. About choosing compassion over fear." sometime during show: "this song is dedicated to everyone who ever has or will live at 8418 N Hollywood Blvd. I want my fucking door back, Steve." and of course, the infamous Opiate intro: "This is the last song..." VIDEOS Not like anyone cares, but here is a description of the videos they showed at this show along with the associated songs: Intro: SmokeBox, of course! Third Eye: Rainbow patterns, like someone with a prism having fun. Stinkfist: Cascading fractal thing. Tunnel vision...mostly muted greys. Forty-six & 2: Revolving multi-colored fractal cube thing. Prison Sex: Excerpts from video...toned down, repeated over and over. Pushit: African tribesmen jumping up and down...animals copulating. Elephants, camels, back to tribesmen. Near the begining Maynard moved up and down in synch with the jumping tribesman...very trippy. Eulogy: My favorite. De-evolving man. First man, then Neanderthal, then chimpanzee. Then skeleton. Sideview of them walking. Sober: Excerpts from video, just like Prison Sex. Aenema: Can't remember! FUNNY MOMENT The funniest moment was when a "crowd-surfer" managed to make it on stage (I can't remember during which song). This little kid ran behind Maynard, and without missing a beat or making a change in his expression, he put back his leg and tripped the little bugger. Pretty funny. THE "DANCE" This being my first show, I was mesmerized by Maynard's "dance". I was going to try to describe it, but I can't...I just can't. That's all!
