What can i say? I seen Tool last October in Cedar Rapids and this concert was a totally different experiance. When I witnessed the Tool show in C.R. I thought I had been taken to the height of what a concert experience can be. Boy, was I mistaken! The use of lighting and the ALEX GREY artwork in the background was breath-taking to say the least. This was not only a concert, it was a living and breathing experience. It was like the concert was alive from the beginning to the end. It never slowed down for a moment. When i close my eyes I can still see the visions in my head. What other band can tour twice in the same year and totally change the experience for the better. ONLY TOOL. Not only has TOOL re- defined what music can be, now they have also re-defined what a live musical show can be and that it can be so much more than just seeing your fav band live. Even after all the gouging TICKET-MASTER does on the tickets, I would have payed triple to see what I saw tonight. Peace. THINK FOR YOURSELF.... ....QUESTION AUTHORITY

This show was of course, awesome. It was the same setlist I saw in Wichita on July 24, but they changed a few little things (bridges and intros and stuff). Reflection was even more complex than in Wichita (somehow). I must admit that I spent a good deal of time watching the sign language girl (the one in the BLACK TANKTOP). I have no idea who this girl was, and I don't even know sign language. But for those of you who were there, you know what I'm talking about. At first I thought it was really odd that they had a sign language interpreter at the show, but then the girl in the brown pants and black tanktop came up. She was great, she was swaying to the music and the way she signed along with it was almost like a beautiful dance. If whoever this person was sees this...I just wanna tell you that you rock. I probably watched you about as much as I watched the band. Anyway....nuff said. Awesome show. Good job TOOl and SIGN LANGUAGE GIRL!

Ok, I went into this show open minded about Tomahawk. People talk them up so much, I thought they might be good. Wrong. I didn't get into them at all. Very boring. I'm gonna show up late to miss them in Moline tomorrow/today. Some dude behind me was yelling "fuck Tomahawk" and some kid was like "dude, that's Mike Patton! Mike fucking Patton!" Kids... Tool - Good God! Not as good as last fall, but pretty fucking good. Highlight of the show was "H.". Some prick behind me kept on pulling my head back and at my fav. part of "H.", he did it again so I turned around and yelled "get the fuck off my head" and he was like "you wanna go? do you wanna fucking go, you bitch!?". I swear to you all, if a band that got my energy flowing (Zao), I would've fucked him up so bad. Fucking prick. I didn't really dig the unnecessary 15 min. drum solo however. I think they took out Eon Blue Apocalypse/The Patient just to do that. I'd rather hear songs. Well worth $40 Set: Sober The Grudge (-) Ions Stinkfist H. Schism Parabol Parabola Aenema -Long/Loud Intermission- Disposition Reflection Triad Lateralis

great show, everything was fucking great. I cant remember any Maynard quotes though i could until about 30 minutes ago, i specifically wanted to remember the setlist to post here but i cant. When ppl used to ask me wat my favorite Tool song was i couldnt choose but now i say The Grudge. Its the absolute best song ever, especially right after when it says "Let go" and it has that huge fucking ending, and you smile and think it cant get any better and then unfortunately it ends. They're still playing the same songs and im looking forward to the next tour and hopefully they'll start playing Pushit and Intolerance, maybe Eulogy ad Third Eye, my god i'd cream my pants if they played Third Eye. Maynard did his speech and its the truest thing ive ever heard. Thinking for yourself is a given, most smart ppl know how to do it but for some reason we're taught to respect authority, simply because authority figures have been telling us wat to do our whole lives so when we hear authority ordering us around we do what it says, its a programmed thing and i hope it gets weeded out and told to fuck off very soon. ...spiral out...keep going...

DAY TWO: Yes, it's spandex. Ok, so here's the deal. About 6 years ago, a girl that lived across the hall from me in college was cleaning out her closets. She happened to be a cross country skier, and one of the items she intended on tossing out was this light blue one-piece spandex bodysuit that she wore during meets. Needless to say, I instantly recognized the immense intrinsic value of such an item and swiped it before it was lost forever to Goodwill. Flash forward to last night's concert. For some damn reason, I got it in my head that there would be no better place on this sweet earth to wear such an item than my 5th tool concert. Why? I'm really not sure...insanity? Perhaps. A death wish? Not that I was aware of, but who knows...The best I can say is this: a lot of people, myself included, usually tend to put on their toughest-looking clothes for a concert. Cammo pants, black shirt, whatever. Why? I dunno, maybe it's a macho thing, maybe we're trying to look tough. Seeing that I am neither macho nor tough, why pretend? Why keep putting up a front? Last night I decided to just say "fuck it", let it fly, have fun, be me. Isn't that one of tool's big messages ("think for yourself...")? And for me, what could be more fun and less macho than a skin-tight, crotch-sqeezing, wedgie-producing blue spandex suit? Not a damn thing. So I wore it. Not to say I wasn't in part fearing for my life. Walking through the parking lot, I got a few heckles and quite a few stares, but at this point I was determined. Too late to turn turn back now (plus, it takes forever to get the damn thing off). I said "fuck it" and went inside. Much to my surprise, the response to my most retarded of clothing choices was overwhelmingly positive. I got lots of laughs from security when they decided that, despite my being wrapped in flesh- hugging synthetic material, they still needed to pat me down. On the floor, lots of people wanted to know what the hell I was doing, but when I explained, they seemed to dig it. Quite a few nice young ladies told me they thought it was awesome. A couple folks wanted to pet me, tug on the suit a little...I felt a little like a kindergarten hamster...a big, blue kindergarten hamster. If nothing else, I think this decision brought a lot of laughs and smiles, which made me feel pretty good. It certainly wouldn't hurt any of us to lighten up some; I'd like to think that maybe I helped some folks see that it's ok to just be themselves. Oh yeah, the concert. Same setlist as last night, but just as incredible. Another completely satiating, wholesome experience. I brought my friend to the show with me tonight, and I think he was pretty blown away. This band has power...if you can't feel the electricity flowing from the stage, check your batteries because you're probably dead. Tomahawk? Again, not too bad (although this time I wore earplugs, would like to still have the use of my ears next time tool rolls through). From reading other reviews from this tour, and from seeing the reaction last night in Omaha, I think Tomahawk may have received their nicest reception yet on the tour. No booing, no throwing shit (thank you Ames!)...not to say that they were awesome, because they weren't, but people tonight were respectful and applauded their efforts. Hey, opening for one of the world's best bands is no easy task. Mark and I were about 3-5 rows back the whole time, directly in from of Mr. Jones again. Great view, lots of tall dudes tonight though. All in all, the crowd around me was excellent. Met some really nice people, everyone nearby was very respectful of their neighbors and focused on the music. It was as comfortable as I've ever felt standing 10 feet from the stage. And yes, the spandex was actually extremely comfortable. I thought I was going to just cook, but it cools pretty well, even with the zipper all the way up. Hell, I might just wear it again...well, maybe. One more night to go. I was way too tired to write this last night, got home and crashed on the couch. Long drive today, I have a feeling it will be worth it though...see you there. mm

PS: Did anyone else notice the video camera at the front of the stage tonight? Last night they had one too, on Justin's side of the stage, pointing across. Tonight it looked like it was focused on Danny. Think they'll be a DVD concert video coming???

Great, great show last night. This was my second time seeing Tool, the first being last year in Cedar Rapids... From the horrible crowd last year, I'm amazed Maynard and crew would even consider stepping foot in Iowa soil again, but thankfully they came and delievered in a big way. First off, Tomahawk... I have no idea why people are so down on these guys. I bought their CD two days before the show, just to check them out (anything with Mike Patton has to at the least be entertaining) and enjoyed the CD a lot. When they played, even though I could only recognize a few snippets here and there, I was throughly impressed. I guess they're just a hit and miss band, but I really like them and thought they were excellent. But I seem to be the minority on the issue. And then there was Tool... They've changed it up a bit since I saw them just under a year ago, but were still just as amazing. I was very happy with the crowd; the aforementioned Cedar Rapids crowd was the stuff of legend when it comes to just a bunch of rude, annoying, inconsiderate, "I'm here to get fucked up and kick ass" type. Someone actually threw a beer at Adam Jones at that show... What the fuck? Well anyway, the crowd last night was the total opposite and just what you should be, focused and experiencing the music, rather than trying to figure out who's ass you're going to kick. I was happy with the setlist, although I would have traded the entire Disposition/Reflection/Triad run (albeit very impressive) for a few more songs instead. Having said that though, I really enjoyed last night, much more than my first Tool show. It was worth my $40 and then some.

I'm gonna skip the setlist process cuz someone else already posted it. Saves me the trouble. Let me say, firstoff, that I found this show to be more enjoyable than the Cedar Rapids show I saw last year. I think that by having MUCH better seats this time, not having tons of ignorant assholes in the crowd, and Maynard wearing the body paint+ women's lengerie, my whole Tool concert experience was escalated. I didn't know if this show was gonna be so great at the beginning, because for the first couple of songs, Maynard had his back to the audience. I had heard from a friend that on the 5th, the crowd wasn't too friendly to Tomahawk, so Maynard decided to play the whole show back to the audience. I was going to be quite upset if that was the case, but luckily, it wasn't. Tomahawk... uhm... I don't really know what to say about them. I liked the music (guitar, bass, drums especially), but the lead singer's voice just kind of pissed me off. But then again, I'm really not too into "industrial" music. At any rate, last night's show was great. Good crowd, good atmosphere, good set-list. Just too bad that the hanging silver people weren't there this time. Maybe the giant floating black-berries made up for them though...

That was the best show I have ever seen. Tomahawk were great. The band was entertaining and the vocals were awesome. Tool have greatly improved their visuals since last fall. I especially loved the backdrops, and the floaty balloon things that they had out during parabola. Maynard stripped down to a bra and some hot pants which was really cool. Last year in Cedar Rapids it seemed as if the band was trying to act all "mysterious" and aloof from the crowd. But last night they actually did some crowd interaction. I missed some of the things that Maynard said, but I caught the part about renting a video, going home to curl up in front of the fire and then have sex ;) The coolest happenings during their set: The extended version of stinkfist + the Elvis Presley lyrics Maynard going nuts during Aenema and Lateralus, he was extremely active during the whole show I also was watching the sign language lady for a while. That was awesome. Now I have to decide where I am going to go see them during the Fall tour

my first Tool show. i got 4 tickets from ticketmaster and gave three to my friends. i felt nice. once we got there we found a guy selling GA. after some bartering i got him to take our tickets plus thirty bucks from each of us for the GAs. he forgot to take one of my friends thirty bucks. it was the first tool show for all of us. and it kicked ass. i've waited years for this experiance and it was the greatest night of my life. nothing compares. we all wanted a little assistence in the form of little squares of pape... but october 9 and 15 will probably be better because we'll be able to plan more. i still cant believe i saw tool last night. my neck is hurting like a bitch because i never stopped moving it for more than 5 seconds. After the show we talked to two drunk guys for a while and some people they met came over and gave them VIP passes. we were going to wait for them to come back but we ended up leaving. But not before we got a picture of two girls beating the shit out of eachother in the grass and shaking Danny Carry's hand. now i understand hes just a guy, but this was some cool shit. his drumming makes me trip out without any assistance. i'm not even a drum fan but he's got such apparent talent it makes me wish i could drum. anyway. two of my friends got in a fight on the way back to sioux falls and one of my friends almost walked back 200 miles. but we wouldn't let him. i don't care what the fuck happend though. they played H.(which i didn't expect, and was completely awesome)and I AM COMPLETE. thank you tool.

I was completely unprepared for this experience. I arrived 3 hours early and managed to be in front row center pressed up against the metal fence. The waiting was well worth it. I was so close i couldn't see the projector screens but i had an excellent view of Tomahawk and Tool for half their show. Tomahawk was very different but very good, they openened dressed as police and managed to impress a lot of people. Only one container of water was thrown at them, didn't hit anyone. They did make us chant tomahawk and that was somewhat lame. When tool came out, maynard opened with his back to us and stayed there for a few songs. He did dance for us after awhile and stripped down to his bikini on underneath. The podium he was on rotated for a portion of the concert as well. The crowd was so intense that i was crushed, glasses smashed and i had to be pulled out by the security team along with most of my friends, we didn't belong up front, but i dont regret it. Tool was so impressive. Maynard wanted us to leave inspired, and i can honestly say i am. Thank you Tool for giving me the opportunity to experience everything. "We are in iowa... more specifically... ames"-maynard Last night for once i was actually happy to be in iowa... more specifically ames, and I hope everyone enjoyed the experience as much as i did. lates.

This was this reviewer's 1st Tool show

this was my first show and was well worth a three and half hour drive north on i-35 from kansas city to ames amidst asshole drivers leapfrogging through the lanes. i've been eagerly anticipaiting a live show from tool for 2 years now since i started listening to them back in '00, and i honestly was not let down at all. not in the least bit. i missed their shows locally in kansas city for the past couple of years and chagrined to hear from friends that attended that tool was "the best live show ever" (verbatim quote). now, i can happily join my friends in agreement. tomorrow, i plan on buying tickets to their october 16th show here in kansas city. summation of the show from my standpoint with some friends (note: not a setlist, just highlights for me and my friends): - tool opens with 'sober', louie (a friend) is later quoted as saying something like "once sober started, i was almost in tears". - 'the grudge' gets played, crowd goes apeshit, some chick in high heels stands on my toes for five minutes of agony - 'h' plays, body surfer falls on my friend james' (see a previous review above from him) head and breaks his glasses. james and cassidy get lifted over the fence from the floor by bodyguards. - after 'h', i backpedal through the crowd from the fence in front of the stage only to step in puddles of alcohol-smelling vomit. - a consoling cigarette break during the itermission on the GA floor leads to people asking to borrow my lighter to light up doobies. - 'aenima' plays, people smash into me and i smash back into them in the middle of the GA (general admission) floor. afterwards, i meet back up with james, cassidy and brandon on the GA floor. - 'disposition', 'reflection', and 'triad' play and a state of calmness overcomes me. - i finally notice the sign language lady (rawr) during 'reflection' and wish i had noticed her earlier since i'm hard of hearing. i can't take my eyes off of her until tool closes with 'lateralis'. - the show ends and my friends and i leave wishing we could do it all over again. thanks TOOL, for unarguably the best live show experience ever!

Anyway, needless to say Tool kicked ass. I sat about 30 feet away from Danny and was transfixed on him the whole show......that guy is simply amazing. I was about a foot away from catching a drumstick, that would have made my day for sure. I can't wait to see them for the 4th time. Thank you TOOL.

By now I have had time to sit back (and sleep) and reflect on what I just witnessed this weekend... Two Tool shows in two days was an incredible experience for me. As far as the Ames show is concerned, IT FUCKING ROCKED!! I have been reading the reviews of dumbshits that have said the wish they didn't play Triad because of the "long drum solos" anyone out there with half a brain would realize that they are seeing the single best drummer to date. When you are old and wrinkly you can tell your grandkids you saw the best damn drummer ever rock out on a 15 min solo. As far as the show went I have to say that it was sort of magical that I could attend a show that I didn't feel overcrowded by the crowd and have to have that sweaty guy behind you digging his arm into you. Or else that annoying fuckface that trys to mosh to everything and anything just because it was cool like... um in '96!!! People at this show knew what the were in for and I believe we definetly got it! There are other songs I wish I had heard but it's fucking TOOL people! If they play one song you love it is always worth the price. Oh yeah, all of you that gripe about ticket prices... take a look around assholes! You think all the mixing and visual equipment they use comes for free??? ~TOOL~

This was this reviewer's 4th Tool show

TOOL was rather remarkable as always on this night, and to attempt to expound on others' previous TOOL rantings and ravings would be a redundancy and mongoloidian at best, so I will, rather, write on what I somewhat obsessed over during the entire show (but hoped previously I wouldn't have the motivation or reason to). TOOL is probably my favorite band, as I'm certain it is many of yours, as well. Imbibing all their awesome power, fluidity, emotional value, and so on is a given for any "favorite band," as it is in my case concerning TOOL. However, many of the fans of the shows I have attended seem to be embued with a "Let's hump it while it moves, but when it sleeps, find a new partner" sort of ethos- ESPECIALLY within the confines of the (if there can be said to be one) "definitive TOOL message." It has been stated in countless ways, but I think the major thesis underlying any TOOL outing could be aptly stated as: "Think for yourself." TOOL fans love to fling this theorum around like a monkey dropping a fresh pile, but they don't exactly practice what they preach. Exhibit A: Tomahawk. Many of the contributing factors to the oddity and specialness of the "TOOL sound" could be accounted for in the length of the songs, the orchestrated structures, the use of metaphor in the lyrics, the compendiate artwork, and so on. The oddity is, in some ways, the draw. But many of the fans are getting stuck on this "Yeah, they're special, but they have SINGLES!" sort of temperament- the exact ideology which produces such blase responses to such also-unique music as Tomahawk's. Do you people even realize what constitutes the makeup of Tomahawk?! Mike Patton: an AWE-INSPIRING singer with even more stage persona than Maynard, formerly of FAITH NO MORE! John Stanier, the former drummer of HELMET! Not to mention members of THE MELVINS and THE JESUS LIZARD. I don't know if you realize this, but TOOL would prolly not have the access to such mainstream notoriety, and the option to shirk said forum's rules were it not for these bands. Faith No More and Helmet comprise, literally, the foundation of the progressive-thrash-hardcore elements which TOOL directly rises from, as well as the heaviness and "art rock" aspects of both The Melvins and The Jesus Lizard. But audiences act as if they are a pithance in comparison to THE ALMIGHTY TOOL. Like I said, TOOL IS my favorite band, but I wouldn't be stupid enough to renege the potential and importance of Tomahawk's members even in the face of the fact they're "merely and opening act." Morons! Are you REALLY all that incompetent musically and that egocentric to think just because a band isn't the one you directly came to see or doesn't have a video, that they're not JUST as good as "your band?" You people are tantamount to test subjects of the practice of lobotomization, seriously. And you dress retardedly. Which brings me to Exhibit B: Meatheads. People have answered this topic on several occassions, but it goes hand- in-hand with the topic stated above. THINK FOR YOURSELF! Brandishing the philosophies because they sound cool in a "fuckin' tough song," but still employing neanderthalic values AFTER the concert is ridiculous. And rampant at these shows, from my experience. Keep spouting TOOL lyrics that you'll never fully understand while diddling your siblings, you rock-bashing clods! But don't think you actually have a GENUINE conception of what a TOOL show is about. I feel ashamed when I watch people moshing to "Disposition," much less to ANY TOOL song- it's not the point. You're missing out, but I suppose that doesn't really keep you up at night as long as there are still terrorists to despise in the world cars to polish and jack off if. Good luck with that! I suppose I'll step off my pulpit for a bit- the Bible is burning my hands. But seriously consider your actions at these concerts. If you are just a TOOL radio listener and want to mosh, I suppose you have just as much right. But don't tout TOOL philosophy in the parking lot afterward, or make a TOOL lyric snippet your MSN Messenger name. You're a social retard, and people hate you. Just deal with it, and keep on sorting those nuts, bolts, washers, and whatnot like a good cretin should. Leave the enjoyment of true art to those who seek understanding, not a chance to brush against a tit in the pit and brag to your friends later. Peace be with you.

Been waiting years to see this band perform and man was I ever blown away. I remember first listening to Tool back in H.S. and thinking that it was the greatest shit I'd ever heard. When Lateralus came out I was floored. When they opened up with Sober I knew I was in for an awesome event. I wasn't on the floor, but still had great seats. Hard to not have good seats in Hilton. Anyways, I was spent after the show was over. What an intense band and sound. I hate hearing people bitch about Maynard not looking at the crowd either. To him and the rest of Tool it's about the music and not the individual. From what I've heard and read we should be thankful that he did turn around about five songs in as he didn't for the whole show the next night in Moline. As anyone, all of my favorites didn't get played, but I gained more respect and love for some other songs that I didn't get into before. All said, I can't believe this was the first time I've seen this band live. I will definately be going to all of their shows that come near this area or wherever I am at that time from now on. Fuck ticket prices, Tool is worth every dime you spend!

First of all I must say I drove 11 hrs to see tomahawk, and tool again. Second I must say that tomahawk was great! Givin the vocals had alot of feedback, but Mr. Patton did have three mics. It was amazing to see the way he used his vocal prossesers and tweeked his voice in so many ways. I had a great view of all this! This was my first time seeing mike, as I like all of his different bands, this was definately a pleasure. Boo to all the people who didn't give them a chance and to the fuck who threw the beer. As for tool. I have always said tool was one of, if not my favorite band. They are among the most artistic and musically illite. And thats why I like them And I must say the set list was a huge disapointment. Don't get me wrong I love all those songs. I just was hoping for something I don't hear on the radio everyday. Maybe its those damn college students but from my favorite band I expect alot. The artistic vision was right on as usual. And the highlight of the show was te last four songs. Tomahawk and tool together was awesome almost entirely worth my $40. lateralis was a great closer.
