Review written by: Alex (Super Juy@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/15/97 17:40:28 This was the first time I ever saw Tool live, and they were incredible. My friend and I actually sat through all of Snoop Doggy Dogg just for good seats for Tool. Their best performances that night were "Stinkfist," "Eulogy," and "Pushit." Somebody's review here says that Maynard said "better than Bjork". He said "better than New York". Makes more sense, considering the fact that he's gay. I don't know why there were so many non-Tool Korn fans. Have you no class? All in all, I thought the whole thing was awesome. Going to Lollapalooza was great, because no matter how big a freak you think you are, you see bigger ones there.

Review written by: flood462 (ssdb29a@prodigy.com) Review posted on: 08/06/97 01:47:23 there was a signifigance behind maynard asking us dig down deep into our souls and say yes. i don't believe that that the other reviewers of this show have picked up on it. it was through no fluke that this entertainer/audience interaction took place directly before the performance of opiate. we did as instructed without a second guess as to what the reason and motive was for this request. we all followed maynard deafly, dumbly, and blindly. we were all sheep. i think that this proves the absolutism of the statement, "believe in nothing."

Review written by: Curt Sharp (wdsharp@voicenet.com) Review posted on: 07/23/97 12:48:54 My heart sank with disapointment as MJK appeared on stage in high heels, tight pants, a bra, and long hair. It was apparant that the possession that once flung Manyard accross the stage would not occur (Try dancing in heels). This time Justin Chancellor stood as the blue and white figure. Tool's appearance was not the only change. The music had evolved. They began with Hooker with a Penis admidst the background of the AEnima cover placed accross three screens and a stage piece that was reminicent of the merkaba (Those who read Nothing in this Book is True, But it is Exactly the Way Things Are will understand). This first piece was humorous considering that while most of the crowd did not wear 501s or Beastie Tees, they did wear their fashonable JNCOs. To the best of my memory, Tool also performed: Forty Six & 2 Stinkfist (This was the best I had ever heard the song) Prison Sex (With a beautiful new verse) Eulogy Sober Pushit Opiate AEnema (With the new video) Many little quirks were added in the songs, but there were no drum solos or jams due to the time constraints (90 min). Overall I was somewhat disapointed (mostly because of the time constraints, crowded seats, and trendy crowd), but I viewed myself as very lucky to have a second opportunity to enjoy Tool in concert.

Review written by: John Osborne (korn162@erols.com) Review posted on: 07/18/97 09:22:32 As promised, I'm back. I'm at home now. Here's my entire Lollapalooza '97 review: I wasn't given a very good first impression of Lollapalooza '97 when I walked into the gate and was told that I couldn't bring my bottled water, empty or not, in to the show. I was forced to throw my $1.09 bottle of fine Deer Park water into a trash recepical before I was patted down and otherwise violated. As a walked away I yelled, "How much is your water here? Fuckin' $25?!" Bastards. Anyway. We found our seats (yes, seats. Feet do get sore) which were located in the right ochestra area and watched Julian and Damian Marley. The only thing remotely impressive about these guys was their cool dancing and back-up singers. Plus, they had to go and pull out a bunch of Bob Marley songs to boot. What fun. A friend and I went to catch a smoke (well, he did. I don't smoke) during most of James' set. That was the point at which I entered the AOL booth, being the cool hacker that I am, and posted the first review. We came back to catch the end of James' set, which wasn't half bad. A little less of the polyester shirts, and I would have been impressed. Then came Korn. The first 30 seconds of their set was filled with energy, but may I ask where it went for the rest? They played A.D.I.D.A.S., Blind, Faget, No Where To Hide, Shoots and Ladders, Twist, [Divine, Good God, Ball Tongue, Lowrider, and a Public Enemy cover -joffe], etc. It was interesting. Got me revved up for Tool too early. Next, Tricky. And, if your wondering why I never left the main stage, well, that's because the second stage bands sucked. Period. Anyway, Tricky sucked. Simple and to the point. They put me to sleep. As if Tricky wasn't bad enough, then came Snoop Doggy Dogg. Interestingly enough, it took the roadies about a half an hour to move some monitors, bring out a drum machine, put up a curtain, and do other minor adjustments for Snoop. Snoop would have been even worse if I didn't have this drunk guy dancing around in front of me. What entertainment. And I didn't have to pay $31 for it. It was an extra. Snoop went off in about an hour, shrouded with many "mutha fuckas", "biatches", and other odd terms. Then, the creme de la creme: Tool. Stupid as I am, I sat all through the change-over from Snoop to Tool thinking that I had to go to the bathroom and didn't wind up going until about 5 minutes before Tool went on. I hate climbing over people, but when you have to pee, nothing gets in your way. I came back from the (smelly) lavatory just in time to here a jazzy remix of Hooker With A Penis. God, I'd love to have that on tape. Then, a dance remix of Third Eye. It was cool. Right before Tool came out, they p layed a few clips of Bill Hicks over the PA. Good stuff. Get's you prepared. Then the good part. The smokebox started playing on the video screen. Everyone cheered. Tool entered the stage. Maynard was dressed like a hooker: bra, tight leather pants, white-painted face, and a long, long pony tail on a shaved head. Justin Chancellor was painted black from head to toe. Adam Jones and Danny Carey were normal for the most part. First song was Hooker With A Penis. Great. Got us all rocking. Then, Stinkfist. It had a little bit added to it. I can't remember for certain but either Forty-Six and 2 or Prison Sex went next. Both were great. Now, I can't remember any of the order of the songs. All I can remember was pushit and Opiate were back to back and =C6nema, of course, was last. Other songs included Sober and Eulogy. The nema video was awesome. I can't wait to see it and tape it. Maynard introduced it by saying, "Special treat. Pay attention. Special treat. MTV might not want to play it." For one complete work on Tool at Lollapalooza, how's about amazing. Simply put, go. Get your tickets. Just seeing Tool is well-worth the money. The law should prevent Danny Carey from playing drums so fast. He might hurt someone. :) And, there you have it. My whole Lollapalooza experience in one extremely long review. And if you didn't read all that shit, I'd go back and read it. Oh, and, thank you Kabir for the "cool" thing. To your dismay, I did yell "chickenweasel" a few times. Well, not THAT loud. :)

Review written by: Master Reviewer (Monty22@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/17/97 22:41:00 i saw/heard much of the same as the other reviewers here, but....while i enjoyed myself immensely and thought tool played well i felt rather manipulated because after MJK's whole "I want to see if you can do this better than New York did last night ... reach into your heart of hearts ... say yea!" thing they played "Opiate" not "Aenema" as others have said. i am reminded of that video store guy in "Clerks"... "did you enjoy your ruse?

Review written by: Master Reviewer (whaz@jerseycape.com) Review posted on: 07/16/97 02:35:12 Ok I thought Tool was good but I was quite dissappointed. This being the 3rd time I had gone to see tool I would have to say it was the worst. Dont get me wrong I love tool but the sound was bad and Maynard showed little or no interest in being there. He wasnt very talkative at all all I remember hearing him say is something before they played opiate and before they played enima he siad want a treat pay attention to this one. The other times I saw tool was at the electric factory in the fall or winter I forget and Asbury park. I would say if this was my first time to see them I would have said it was great but since it wasnt I had higher expectations and they werent met. danny was great so was adam and justin maynard was good but I guess he was sick of the whole lolapalooza deal and didnt feel like being there ok well I am gonna stop wasting all this space. thanks for lostening

Review written by: Dave (bergess@bellatlantic.net) Review posted on: 07/15/97 21:19:41 Tight. Powerful. Gorgeous. Their dynamics were incredible. Maynard was mesmerizing in Kabuki face paint, tight leather pants, stuffed bra, and ponytail. The way he strutted across the stage, a bigger diva I've never seen. It was impossible to take your eyes off of him. Justin was in black paint from head to belt. What's up wit' dat, holmes? Was that a message, or was he just bored?

Review written by: Mistress_Kitty (IrkErkUrk@email.msn.com) Review posted on: 07/15/97 18:11:04 A very orgasmic experience! Need I say more? I got wet just listening to Maynard's vocals. Adam is the hottest thing I think I've ever seen. I've been a serious TOOL fan since 92 and every time I see or here them they just get better and better! I met them for a brief moment in Philly at the Electric Factory. Except Maynard who ran away on to the tour bus, but hey who could blam him? Would you wanna get mobbed by a bunch of screaming fans? All-in-all it was a great preformance. After hearing Pushit li ve I will forever get the chills!! TOOL I love you!!

Review written by: Phlebas (Phlebas@Psu.Edu) Review posted on: 07/15/97 17:23:42 A pleasure for my eyes, a disappointment for my ears. I had the honor of standing against the grate, front and center in the pit, roughly 6-8 feet from Keenan. He was cleverly made up, though the costume struck me as just a wee bit too showy -- inklings of that dreadful Marilyn Manson band, with a dash of extra creativity for good measure. But the sound. I admit, I am a hopeless Tool addict for many reasons: the music, the lyrics, but most importantly, Keenan's voice. Naturally, I was pissed beyond reasoning to discover that from the pit, all you can hear is the music and a few hundred sweaty, annoying people singing along in their own terrible, off-key tone. Consequently, his voice was almost entirely drowned out. Add to my dismay the complete lack of interaction with the audience, and I can safely say this won't be the Tool concert I'll look back upon with a sigh of delight. Every other band sucked ass except Orbital. (That Satan song really was great.) And they charge $3.50 for a bottle of water at that god-forsaken place. (At least Camden has found the means for SOME revenue.) And the girl next to me was kicked in the face by a rabid crowd-surfer's flailing boot. Alas. Better luck next time. [Note from Kabir -- The sound at that venue sucked for the one I saw there in 1995. "Satan", yes.]

Review written by: David Rue (drue@penn.com) Review posted on: 07/14/97 22:10:15 It was great. I was in the second row in front of the stage and the sound was good. Maynard is quite an artist. Too bad they didn't play for the whole day I thought it was great, better than Mountain, Black Sabbath and Humble Pie in 1971 I am a 41-year old anthropologist and haven't been to a whole lot of concerts in the past fifteen years -- in fact many of the people I was seeted with kept asking me if I was a policeman. I thought Tool's performance was one of the best I have ever seen and wished they has played for the entire day. If they ran out of material they could do covers of old Pearl Jam or Soundgarden tunes or something for all I care.

Review written by: RetrostarS (RetrostarS@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/14/97 20:12:37 TOOL was beyond amazing. I've admired their music (thats right, admire - I'm not a fan, fans are osculating pieces of machinery there to cool you - I have no intentions doing that! Oh relax, I'm just joking around - I'm not THAT pretentious!) for quite a while now, but I had never seen them perform live. What a show! I got lucky enough to get pit tickets and I was right up front, against the gate the whole time TOOL was on. It was amazing! You haven't experienced TOOL until you are dead center in front of Maynard, looking into those beady eyes of his! You know he stares in people's eyes for a disturbingly long time, talk about connecting with your audience..... Anyway, they played a little bit of everything, from stinkfist to opiate, like I said before - amazing.... The make up reminded me a bit of tha t little band, oh you know, they were around a few years back, kinda satanic or something, kiss or something (note: sarcasm)- it was good though - I'm sick and tired of these little "wanna look like a cool rock star" kids, playing their instruments, stari ng at their shows. Hey - good for you Maynard - a little showmanship never hurt anybody! Keep the disturbing and the make up (even the fake boobs) in music! They also premiered the AEnima video (sorry - I can't make the cool little "ae" connect thing - I guess I haven't become cool enough yet). The video was as artistic and disturbing as their previous efforts - i loved it! Ok- I guess I've babbled enough - read the other reviews, they are a more info packed I'm sure, but for right now, I'm feeling a wee bit nausiated being so pandering to a band - yeah its TOOL and all, but I hate to pander - they are just people you know. ......think about it! Laura PS - by the way - what the hell are you doing staring at this puter al the time reading about TOOL? Go outside, start your own band, be a SELL OUT! Thats what life is all about, finding your talent and then pimping it out for all its worth (speaking of pimping someone or something out - I run a small promotions company in the NJ/PA area - wanna sell out? be known? contact us at RetrostarS@aol.com - yeah I know, shameless self promotion - but hell, what can you do?????)

Review written by: p.d. (pdisciul@svc.picker.com) Review posted on: 07/14/97 20:10:45 quite simply, all other bands besides TOOL that played at lollapallooza sucked. that being the case i didn't waste any of my precious time watching them. there were too many young punks in the parking lot into korn, but i forgive them since their minds haven't had a chance to fully mature. this was my 6th time seeing TOOL and as usual it was an outstanding performance. the visual effects were paticularly interesting. mjk is is unquestionably the best singer to come along since rob halford. all songs were equally impressive, but i've got a soft spot for eulogy. hopefully TOOL will play another tour after lollapalloza so i can get another dose before they go into hiding. kabir, keep up the good work, this is one of the only worthwhile sites on this whole www. [Thanks! -- K]

Review written by: Amanda (tigge20@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/14/97 16:28:56 I saw Tool at Lollapalooza in Camden, and let me just say that they were absolutely incredible! I was never totally into them, although my boyfriend had been getting me to listen to them a lot more recently, but to see them live was a shock. I was very surprised at how well Maynard's voice sounded. Like my boyfriend said, after being onstage for over 45 minutes, he should not have been humanly capable of hitting and sustaining some of the notes he hit, yet he did it and did it incredibly well. I was so enthralled by how great they sounded that I went out to the mall and bought "Opiate," "Undertow," and "Aenima," and I plan on putting them into heavy rotation in the CD player! Maynard's stage presence is great, he was one of the only performers to seem like he was enjoying himself (maybe it was the tight leather pants and the black see-through bra that did it!) The rest of the band was just as inhumanly incredible as Maynard, and all I have to say is that this show has made me a Tool fan for life!

Review written by: Loki (enjoy@worldlynx.net) Review posted on: 07/14/97 04:33:22 Been a fan since Opiate, but this was the first time I've seen them live. A few words come to mind...tight, bold, innovative, provocative...I think I'm still wondering how many people out of that enormous crowd actually get the point. It's apparently very easy for people to label Tool. This is probably because of mankinds general inability to "take it all in". Focusing on one particular aspect of a group is silly. Trying to find out what the singers favorite food is is silly. This kind of music has a point (or it may not)...the trick is, if you find yourself pondering this sentiment for more than one or two seconds, the band has done their job. People don't get that. I actually had an acquaintance of mine say that he did not enjoy the performance. That's OK...but coming from someone who enjoys looking at pictures of naked 7 year olds, and swallowing percosets in order to "feel up to being alive" , absolutely solidifies my opinion regarding the state of "society". Opinions are like assholes...everybody's got one...oh well... Hats off to MJK's get-up. Nifty job, I must admit. The no. 1 dickhead award goes to: The guy who thought he would get the bands attention buy painting himself like MJK has at previous venues. WHY DO YOU NEED TO GET THEIR ATTENTION, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING THEY HAVE TO SAY OR TELL YOU IS IN THE MUSIC....PAY ATTENTION...

Review written by: TangSooDoPete (pmr@ks.unisys.com) Review posted on: 07/14/97 01:04:14 Well, this was a last minute adventure. Bought tickets at 1:30pm at Boscov's..they were 10th row..S section..right side of stage. Got to ol' beautiful Camden at about 3:00pm...James was on the main stage..didn't impress me..Walked around a bit with my friend checking out the booths...etc..etc..8:10'ish rolls around. TOOL comes out. You already heard the getup. I just have to say. This is the 3rd time I have seen TOOL live and the 1st where I could actually sit, examing, and enjoy it all. On Push It..my god.. I thought I was dreaming..I couldn't grasp reality. Between the images on the screen and the music and watching Maynard I zoned the hell out. On Opiate...Maynard freaking blew me away. When he belted out "Fuck you" or whatever he says...he used every ounce of energy and found more. I actually saw him trembling grasping for more..after that..he stood up and did his stumble weaving dance..I actually think he wasn't faking it after that belch. I couldn't keep my eyes off of Maynard..he was so locked in to the music. Danny and Maynard seemed to *ME* that they were having a blast. Justin and Adam were doing there own thing. The new video was just to crazy for me. I didn't even want to try to put any of that together. I was totally satisfied with everything.. maybe if they played *cold and ugly* ;} I would have been estatic. Much better than the show at Electric Factory..I could enjoy and take in everything. You have to...or miss out. Until next time..... Side Note: Snoop totally sucked..had high comedic value and if you wanted to rattle the freaking fillings out your teeth. Saw KoRn for the 2nd time. They weren't to bad. There shit sounds too much of the same though. Decent stage props..low rider bikes, auto parts. It was a dust bowl up in the lawn section. The pits were tearing shit up HxC.... Enough Rambling, @Pete@

Review written by: Sean and James Quirk (jquirk@monmouth.com) Review posted on: 07/13/97 18:47:02 Tool went on at 8:15. They did the usual entrance: before they got on, they played bowel-shaking rumbles and showed the "flaming milk square" that you can see on the CD inlay to Aenima. As all the drunken idiots cheered, Tool hit the stage. Justin, with head newly shaved, was painted completely black, from head to toe. He looked downright menacing. Adam was normal, save for his hair, which now has hints of red in it. Danny, of course, was normal. It looked as if he cut his hair, but I can't be sure. He had his Enochian magic board next to his kit (it looked like a large gong, which is what I'm sure anyone who hasn't read the Modern Drummer interview thought). Maynard. Oh, my, Maynard. He was wearing skintight leather pants, platform shoes, a bra with false tits (complete with nipples), white face paint that was only on the front part of his face (like a Greek tragedy play mask), and a long black ponytail which was attached at the back of his head. he looked like a cross between a bizarre manaquin and some old gypsy magician. It was definitely odd, and transfixing, of course. They opened up with Hooker with a Penis, which I thought was the perfect song for the leech-pit monetary debacle that is Lollapalooza. There seemed to be a note of ironic triumph in Maynard's voice and posture as he belted out, "Buy, buy, buy, my new record." It made me smile. A word about sound: if you were on the side, it sucked. The way Camden's acoustics are set up, you can only hear high end (ie the guitars) if you're in front of the stage. I had seats on the side. Korn sounded like a huge bass assault. During Tool, a friend and I went commando and sought out better seats. Eventaully, we ended up on the lawn. There, the sound was perfect - clean, clear, and loud. Adam's tone never ceases to amaze me. He had three amps on stage: his trusty Marshall 50 watt, a Mesa/Boogie, and an old "Blazer", I believe, which I have been told is an ancient Marshall, but I think it's a bass head. Justin played through Ampegs. I still don't know what kind of bass Justin uses. He uses the same one for the whole set, as he did at the Roseland, NY, show. I think it may be a guild, possibly a Warwick. Who knows. Adam used his "green burst" black Les Paul on all songs save Prison Sex, in which he switched to a sunburst Les Paul. Danny had the same kit which is shown in the Modern Drummer interview. His drum sound was perfect. You could actually hear even the softest cymbol hits. Amazing. Justin seemed to be much more comfortable then he was when I saw them in NY. This time, he actually had a very commanding prescence. Adam was the same, cool and collected on the left. His playing was near impeccable. I think Tool is one of only a few bands that sounds the same on CD as they do live. They are _tight_. There was a little jamming in the middle of Stinkfist which I found to be very interesting. Here are the songs, in no order: Hooker with a Penis (opener), Prison Sex, Eulogy, Pushit, 46&2, Sober, Stinkfist, Opiate, Aenima to close. They played for an hour and ten minutes. Maynard was amazing. The only thing he said to the crowd was the following: "Let's see if you can do better than Bjork did last night. I'm going to count to three, and I want you to reach down into the deepest, darkest part of your soul, and just say 'yes'. Ready? 1...2....3..." Then they launched into Pushit. It was hypnotic. The video screens helped as well. For all the songs, they played some reall fucked up trippy colors and patterns. It was different in NY, which showed a lot of different scenes (torture scenes, elephants fucking, etc). They closed with Aenima, in which Maynard said, "Special treat, special treat, pay attention. This isn't on MTV yet. they're not sure if they want to play it. Would you like to see it?" The video to Aenima is unreal. I defy anyone to try to figure the whole thing out. It has a lot of parts: water, a man in a business suit, a strange "alien figure", the man throwing around a box, the alien in the box, umbilical cords, more water, shots of the man walking into walls of water. It's very dark, very surreal, and quite possibly Tool's masterpiece. Let's hope the shits at MTV know a good thing when they see it and decide to play the video. Watching Maynard is like taking a drug. He sways weirdly to the music, convulses, touches his "pussy", or just stands still. it's like he's doing his own little ritual dance with the music. And the way he sings is so strange: it's like he opens his mouth, and this amazing sound just comes out. it doesn't even seem like he's straining at all. Some thoughts: Eulogy is about Maynard, not jesus. There is more going on with Tool then people think. Tool has a lot of fun screwing around with people, especially interviewers. What matters is the music. Concentrate on that. Once again, Tool was perfect, the best band I've ever seen live.

Review written by: Eric (nrevilla@monmouth.com) Review posted on: 07/13/97 15:10:16 The two days before the show were a bit of warm up. I saw two tool videos (Stinkfist and Sober), 2 tricky videos (Christiansands and Black Steel), an orbital video (the Saint) and a summercamp video (uh... i forgot). Friday, the day before, me and my brother went to angela's house. Later, frank and jess arrived and we ate and watched a movie. At about 3:00 AM, melissa shows up, and at 4:00 we all go to sleep. We left at 11:00 AM the next day and had brekfast at the manalapan diner. Me, brandon, jess and angela took one car while frank and melissa took the other (the organization of groups does not necessarily reflect their relationships). We paid $10.00 for parking, each, walked past a shit-smelling building, and walked up to the gate. The brain forest was one big guilt trip. It told about how cows release methane into the air, which sounds like one more reason to kill them. We took our seets, section 203, row t, seat 62. We had just missed the marleys. Only me, brandon and melissa had ever heard of james, but when they played the song from their first video, jess, frank and angela remembered who they were. KoRn rocked the place. I was suprised that they played Twist, but i was realy suprised that they played Ball-Tongue because i thought i was the only one who liked that song. I was wrong. If I had known more of tricky's music, I would have enjoyed it more. Me and brandon left while they were playing Black Steel, unfortunatly. Snoop diggity dogg was good, but I wasn't as pumped up as frank, angela and melissa were. Then tool came on. I happened to find myself in seat 69, and the sun had just gone down so row t wasn't as hot. The rest of the group didn't want to move down, so we stayed up there. The girls didn't seem to care to much, but they enjoyed it. Brandon and frank were kind of lost because brandon was just becoming a tool fan and frank didn't get AEnima yet. Brandon and jess also mistook the sound check guys as maynard and danny. While they were setting up, they were playing dance remixes of Third Eye and Lounge versions of Hooker with a Penis. When they finaly came out, maynard was wearing a wig that looked like his old hair, a black bra and white face paint. Justin was painted entirely black or blue, i realy couldn't see from back there. The set list went something like Hooker with a Penis, Stinkfist, Eulogy, Prison Sex (with extra verse), 46 & 2, Sober, Pushit and Aenima. After Pushit, maynard wanted to see if we could make more noise than New York did the previous night. He said on the count of 3 for everyone to reach down (at first I thought he was going to say something like "reach down and whip out your dick") and get to the darkest corner of our hearts and emit the loudest scream we could (or most evil). He never said who made more noise. They had a special treat for us. They showed the AEnima video. It was far away, but I got the gist of it. It left me fealing a bit uncomfortable; maybe I'm wrong, but I think there was only one charecter in that video. Oh, well. It was the only part of their performance that I sat down for. The mosh pit in the the front was kind of tame, but two smaller mosh pits were formed on the grass behind us. All we could see were large dust clouds. I think one guy either got trampled or had a heart attack. All in all, it was amazing. We left during orbital, along with a large mob of tool fans who also didn't want to see orbital. Brandon bought a large tie-dyed sheet, which he later realized would mess up the decoration of his room. There was a van giving out free Imortal Records shit. Jess got all the way up to the table, and then couldn't get out. Brandon had to run in and help her. We drove to Chili's, thristy and tired. Worst cheese-steak sandwich I've ever had. I accidentaly left my blanket and pillow at angela's and my anklet in jess's car. I added my ticket to my collection (which included two phish shows, and arena foot-ball game and the Smokin' Grooves show from the week before) and slept comfortably; something i had done in a while.

Review written by: Chuck Herman (compucom.com) Review posted on: 07/13/97 11:43:27 My wife and I made the pilgrimage from Baltimore and arrived around 5 p.m.. I should have heeded my gut feeling and timed our arrival for 7:45, because the two (bands ?) we witnessed before TOOL - TRICKY and SNOOP DOGGY DOG - were a total waste of time. This was the fourth time I've seen\heard TOOL live, and as always, the band was tight and the music inspired and inspiring. And everyone is aware by now of the set list and stage costumes, so no need to repeat them here. What I will address here is my disappointment at the almost total lack of interaction with the audience by the band collectively, and in particular M.J.Keenan. At previous TOOL shows, even as recent as the February concert in Asbury Park, Maynard at least showed a passing interest in the people who came to listen. Alright, I realize the primary reason for going is the music . . . but that in and of itself should not preclude SOME interaction with the audience. I don't know . . . maybe I shouldn't call Maynard's interest in the audience into question . . . even after he chose to turn his back to the "throngs" after each song. But c'mon MJK, the least you could do for the mindless waifs who hang on your every word, the ones who would cheer you on even if you would decide to move your bowels on-stage, is throw them a bone every once in a while.

Review written by: snoop's biotch, and his enforcer malcolm (xwenchx@hotmail.com jodokast@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/13/97 11:20:45 the rock show was awesome. the crowd roared like a lion in a cage. last night, was one of the most amazing nights of my life. i have seen her, the woman that i must have. i don't know why they got rid of that maynard guy, he was pretty good, well i thought so... but i am quite exhilarated by the change of pace. rowr. she was alluring and exotic and her delicate beauty was perfectly offset by the presence of the burly new african-american bassist. i thought they just changed bassists recently anyway, that justin guy must not have satisfied them. i don't have a set-list available because i was too enthralled by that voluptuous goddess writhing about on-stage, and her sweet siren song (in other words, i can't write well with my left hand). it seemed as if she was singing just to me. we were the only two people in the arena. she is my soul mate and i will seek her until the ends of the earth. ooo-oooh witchay woman.... rock over london, rock on camden, timex- takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.

Review written by: Joffe (Joffe@juno.com) Review posted on: 07/13/97 09:06:19 Well.. First I'd like to say John Osborne is a nerd =) j/k.. I, along with him, the drummer from my band, and three others crowded into a car and made our pilgrimage a little after 1:00 pm est.. At the beginning we walked around outside.. I caught a littl e of "Inch" on the second stage.. Great.. More generic, three-piece power-pop.. I wish it was Failure.. Or Atari Teenage rioot.. Oh well.. The Marley's were mediocre.. Their original material was ok.. The Bob Marley covers were lame.. James, well.. What can I say.. I'm not much of a fan.. But they performed well.. Korn put on a mediocre show for Korn, but I still enjoyed them.. Tricky is pla in out dumb.. his drummer and bassist are ok.. But that's it.. Snoop: "All they ladies in da house say, 'muthafucka biatch shit!'", "We love you Tupac!".. Lame, Snoop is absolutely washed up.. But there was a smelly drunk guy in front of me that seemed to enjoy it ;) Now.. What we've all been waiting for.. TooL.. Well.. as in all the other Lollapalooza dates, Maynard had a stuffed bra, leather pants, white face paint and a fake ponytail.. Justin was shirtless painted entirely black, with black pants.. Danny and Adam w ere basically themselves.. We saw the videos all you guys see, including nema, which was ok, imho.. They put on a great show.. Danny, well.. He's incredible.. My mouth was to the ground during the fills in Sober.. OK.. Here's the songs they played (sorry if this isn't in order).. Hooker With A Penis Stinkfist (extended bridge) 46&2 Eulogy Prison Sex (extended bridge) Sober Pushit (YES!) Opiate (slow version) nema Great performance.. Good sound and mixing.. And I love Pushit =) - joffe - ps.. Oribital.. mediocre (sorry Kabir).. But the song where they kept flashing "Satan" wasn't too bad =) [That's the song that sold me -- Kabir]

Review written by: John Osborne (korn162@erols.com) Review posted on: 07/12/97 15:03:39 Well, I'm typing at Lollapalooza right now. Interesting, eh? I'm using AOL in they're little booth. Neato. Well, besides the AOL part. Tool hasn't played yet, but I'll be sure to put my two cents in later. It shall be interesting. Julian and Dean (or something) Marley just played. They raped all their fathers music. My friend is impressing all the others by playing the Tool samples off this page. Oh, well. I'll be back later. Enjoy yourselfs. [That's so cool -- Kabir.]
