Review written by: Vegas Hack (imnotthatadvanced) Review posted on: 08/22/97 04:10:29 well im gonna try this again. this was my 2nd tool show. the first was the amazing huntridge show in vegas last fall. that show will probably forever remain the best show ive ever seen and one of the 5 best nights of my life. since i was so close for the last show and because i was not into scammin my way to the front- i hung on the back lawn for this one. i dont quite get maynards get up but ill get over it. tool was the goods again. i should be allowed to feel this good more than twice a year. for those of you up front you missed the best possible sequel to the mosh pit--bonfires were lit and people raged around em until the steroid fed security weasels came out over and over with extinguishers. i"ll drive 3 hours to see tool anytime.

Review written by: Eric Brink (stupidmop23@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 08/12/97 19:11:17 This was my second Tool show. Not that I'm complaining, but Maynard just wasn't as captivating as when I saw them at the Universal Ampitheater in LA. He didn't move as much. Instead, he went with his hooker outfit. No other man could look so natural with breasts. Before the show, they played a tape of Bill Hicks? rambling on about people selling out and their songs becoming Coke commercials. Then it went right into a jazz version of Hooker. During this version, the crew was setting up, and a weird short guy with '80s hair and a blond mustache kept coming out and checking Maynard's mic and put a bag of stuff next to Danny's drums. My friends and I thought it looked like Maynard, but we weren't sure. A few minutes later, the rest of the band came up and started playing Hooker, and the weird roadie walked by and grabbed the mic and started singing. We were right- it was Maynard. During Hooker, Maynard took off the wig and clothes and turned himself into a true hooker with a penis. After Hooker, they broke into Stinkfist. Great song!!! Maynard took off the wig, but left the lipstick and the breasts on all night. Between songs, he said "This is a song about subtle changes" and they played 46&2. "This is a love song" introduced Crawl Away. First time I ever heard this live. Awesome. Before H., he said "This is a song about choices." The usual. Right into Eulogy. Man, the way he uses his voice during that song is just insane. Long intro to Sober. Adam was using some kind of box with all kinds of different colored lights that would alternate. He kept beating his strings with it. The graphics were really cool this time. People walking away from each other. Then, Maynard said "This is an old song...but not ours." I knew it was No Quarter. That made the set complete. Better version than the original. Straight into Opiate. One of my favorite songs. Then came the last song of the night, Aenema. Got to see the video for the first time. I wasn't sure which to watch more- Maynard or the video. The video was crazy. But Maynard was going ape. Literally. Swinging his body around. I knew that it would be the last song, but was hoping it wouldn't be. They left the stage, and the crew came out and started taking away the equipment. There was no way I was going to stay and watch Prodigy after such an amazing show. My friends and I left, satisfied, and it was definitely worth the $35 we paid for the tickets. If anyone has a tape of the show, contact me. I'd really like a copy.

Review written by: Michael McKenney (friends@skylink.com) Review posted on: 08/12/97 15:02:37 Since everyone else has thoroughly reviewed the show, I'd just like to throw out some general thoughts. First, I'd like to thank Tool. This was the second time I've seen them. I saw them first in Las Vegas (where I live) on the Aenima tour. Both shows were extremely professional. It says a lot about the performers when they don't fuck around with their songs. Bands that do are usually worn out. It's obvious to me that Tool is very much alive and quickly working their way to the top of the music world. Secondly, it's refreshing to follow a lead vocalist (Maynard) who refuses to take himself seriously. How many other bands can we say that about? It's been a long, long time since I've liked a band as much as I like Tool. Stay true to your vision guys, you are on the right path. Thank you. Michael McKenney Las Vegas, NV

Review written by: Steven Kick (skicker@cats.ucsc.edu) Review posted on: 08/11/97 18:43:37 Though I've been a fan for five and a half years, this was my first show. I think that by the time Adam, Danny, Justin, and Billy Ray took the stage, I was the only one in the crowd still sober. After about twenty seconds though, I was completely drunken by Tool's performance. If ever it were possible to mystify 60,000 people, these guys did it (and fairly quickly I might add). I'm not sure if they got bored or tired, but after about four songs, the mosh pit died and people just stared at the stage. It was sort of like watching a child being born; you just can't look away for fear of missing somthing. Things of interest: Failure - WONDERFUL second stage alternative to Snoop Dogg's constant "Beatch" calls. BTW, Failure also opened the show on the mainstage. Before Aenema, MJK announced that "this song is about Real Estate, and feeling fresh and light as a feather." Crawl Away F**king rocked. I just wish they had played more older songs.. actually, if they had just KEPT playing.. Can't have everything I guess. Have to mention the pause in the middle of H. at "I don't mind".. the song faded out with MJK repeating "I don't mind" quieter and quieter. To me the measure of a great performer is knowing how to captivate an audience. Waiting for that last call seemed to take about 5 minutes when in fact it was only a matter of seconds. Personally, I think that the show went WAY over a lot of people's heads. I remember one guy that was standing behind me, looked like if you tapped his nose he'd fall flat on his back. Sad to say, but I think that was the predominant thing that most of the Lolla's loved.. the way that Tool's music and their videos enhanced their trip. To me it was a trip in itself, well worth the six hour wait in the putrid sun.

Review written by: Brandon Majowicz (gold18@gte.net) Review posted on: 08/11/97 15:59:44 First of all hear is the setlist: Hooker with a Penis Stinkfist 46&2 Crawl Away h. Eulogy Sober No Quarter Opiate Aenema TOOLapalooza started around 8:05 with the lounge version hooker which then went into what sounded like the begining of - ions. The band started playing hooker when maynard came running out in a blonde 80's hairstyle wig, a mustache, a sleeveless t-shirt . After hooker finished he put on his familar Peg Bundy style wig and bra. This was the 4th time i hhave seen Tool and they just keep getting better. The first time I saw them there was 200 preople there and the last time there was 60,000. dedicated TOOLhead Brandon

Review written by: Brian Mafi (Brian_Mafi@smtpgate.Mitchell.com) Review posted on: 08/11/97 12:55:55 Hey, Did the 8-8 Lolla show, and thought I'd throw in my 2-3 cents. As I got to the show around 6:00 p.m. (had to work), I'll not go into the other bands much (as I didn't see 'em!). I saw the Pugs on 2nd stage; very silly, artsy, heavy, avant garde tunes with a rather cool Asian looking female fronting. 2 bass players, one in full distortion-lead mode;. a keyboard player that I THOUGHT was a woman, but I believe was a man (Maynard, are you listening?). I saw Danny watching these guys rather intently; more on that later... Well, in regards to Snoop, I'm not one to badmouth other "musicians"; if someones' music brings others' a moment of happiness, it's served its' purpose. I'm not too into rap, so I'll just say, it was entertaining; I wish I could take a "chronic break" onstage with product supplied by the crowd! Ah, Tool... I'll be to the point; expecting Maynard in his womanly guise, who the hell is the guy with the moustache that looks like a cross between Rod Stewart and Les Claypool? Oh, Maynard... so "Hooker With A Penis" is roaring away, they get to the break, and Maynard starts ripping his clothes off while Adam rips a WICKED extended break. The bra comes on, the "hoots" are slipped in (boy, they move nice!), he smears a lovely shade of red lipstick halfway across his face, and dons a SILLY-ASS huge mockery of a Peg Bundy hair-do wig. I've found MY moving buddy... eventually the wig comes off, but the lovely lipstick application stayed all night. The music; this is my second Tool show ( 1 being the Aenima tour), and I can't wait to see 'em again. Simply amazing. So intense, so dynamic, so damn tight! We've all seen the setlists, the usual stuff, with "Crawl Away" this evening, about a 5 minute "Sober" intro. So back to the Pugs/Danny; I approached him after they finished and asked him "any chance of us getting a No Quarter? I know you played it the last show, but...". He just sort of smiled and said " you never know". Just the answer I thought I'd get! I just smiled, and left him. Soooooo, imagine my delight & surprise when they played it. I'm an old, "over 35" fart, so I KNOW THIS DAMN TUNE! Just incredible... The coolest part was as Adam is playing the intro guitar part, the camera for the overhead screen is showing Adam centered against the Enochian board, smoke flowing around him... Jimmy Page, eat your heart out! Tool sure have a way of making a song their own; just an incredible arrangement of the tune. Where the tunes modulates to this fully scary, heavy section... WOW. New lyrics (I think), new music. God, I hope they put it out soon (will they release a live or studio version?). Danny, if my nice approach helped in playing it, thanks for making my year! Someone mentioned a technical glitch; it was pretty strange! It sounded like Dannys' Simmons (electronic drums) pads were triggering with TONS of reverb on them. The true pros they are, no one batted an eyelash and just plowed through it ('bout 10 seconds of "whathefuck!?!"). Great video screens, great lighting, excellent sound, thanks, guys. If anyone thinks the state of rock & roll is critical, go see how it's done properly, with integrity, style, substance, and panache. You guys truly are the apex... thank you again. P.S. Anyone have the techno "Third Eye", and the lounge "Hooker"? Would LOVE to get those! Very cool! I'm most depressed that their set was NOT in the online broadcast... did any taper get this show? I'd love to negotiate for a copy... See You Auntie! Brian Mafi

Review written by: Chris Suriano (undertooled@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 08/10/97 03:18:30 After making up some lame excuse to miss work and get to the show, I headed off to the Blockbuster Pavillion on a hot and smoggy Friday afternoon. There was anxiousness in the air knowing that THE BOYS WERE BACK IN TOWN.(TOOL that is!!) So I shelled out my 15 bucks for parking and made my way into the venue. FAILURE opened on the main stage with an outstanding set. They sounded just as good as when they opened for TOOL at the Glass House. Then the Bob Marley kids went on, then James, and finally Tricky. During this time I took many breaks for 3 dollar water. WAS SUP BIOOOOCHHHHH..The party is over here, so fuck yaalll. Say SNOOP up side your head say SNOOP up side your head!!!!The DOGG was in the house and as high as kite. After listening to a flurry of "MUTHA FUCKAS Do you do the CHRONIC?" I wondered" What in the hell was this guy doing on stage?" It was at that moment when TOOL drummer: DANNY CAREY, walked right down our row with other TOOL CREW. You could see he was focused as he made his way backstage. Finally, the boys walked on. everyone was on stage except for REVEREND MAYNARD. Then they opened with HOOKER w/A PENIS. WHERE WAS MAYNARD???????????????????? Maynard was dressed in a orange sleeveless t-shirt with a Blonde Billy Ray Cyrus looking wig(also a fake mustache). He fooled us all. He looked like a roady. Later he stripped down, threw on some lipstick, a bra with fake breasts, and a huge afro like women's wig ala Peg Bundy. So tool was their typical selves. Mezmerizing the crowd with their intensity and hard driven energy. The set list was somewhat typical with one exception. We got a great suprise. Right after SOBER.....Reverend MAYNARD announced, " this is a really old song, but it isnt ours!!!!" THEY PLAYED "NO QUARTER" yes, let me repeat that, I said they played NO QUARTER What a show, it was unbelievable. Another TOOl memory Too bad you couldnt be there to see the greatest band on the planet....................Maybe Next time See ya at the next TOOL show, Chris

Review written by: Will (GENOCIDEXX@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/10/97 03:14:16 Warning: this is very long...i HAD to get it all out though techno music,Bill Hicks, 3rd eye techno, Jazzy Hooker, Bill Hicks again... Low rumbleing, Smoke box, 3 walk on stage take their places...and then some dude with long blond hair, a moustache, and surfer shirt... hmm hmm hmm...hmm hmm hmm..."I met a boy wearing van's, 501, and a dope beastie T..." and so it began, Tool performed i nfront of my eyes for the second time, very different from the first Hooker with a Penis... in the middle of the song on that one section maynard loses the surfer fit, and sports his breasts, etc. the middle instrumental section was longer due to that my younger brother: "why is he wearing tits?" , "ummm...he want's too", "but they look so real" :) Stinkfist... and the crowd goes wild...not much to say about this one..except it caught me off guard because it didn' t start off the same and the elctronnic drums part, it wasnt in the beginning, instead towards the ending, with someother very cool soun ding stuff that isn't on the cd...very cool fractals, a black hole, on the screen "This one is about subtle changes..." 46 & 2... my personal favorite by Tool, more fractals, about the same as on cd, but very kick ass none the less. "this is a love song"... Pushit? mabey..nah... Crawl Away... i was hopeing for Swamp Song as the other undertow cut...but i cant complain...the only fuck up i have seen at a TOOL show, maynard gets drowned out bye technical distortion...twice..outside of Hooker this was the only song i hadn't seen yet "Ladies and gentleman, this is our former guitar tech _____ " (i forget what name he said) Eulogy... there you have it folks, it aint about JC, Hicks, Rollins, or himself..its the former guitar tech :) Ape walking through evolution and frozen fractal when he was on the megaphone. Ended very different..heavy "this is about choices"... H... fucking stoners, too many of 'em, could not figure out what song this was for many seconds...different in the way he said "I don't mind" at the end more fractal stuff...this will be Tool's "hold up your lighter" song "This is an old one"...silence... "i think its off opiate", yeah it's gotta be off opiate" my friends say, i just stand and wait ...more silince... "Not ours"... No Quarter... the only song i wasn't screaming my head off...gave my legs a break too....coins falling into a puddle, and a huge zipper in space long intro, swirling led me to believe it was gonna be 3rd eye...but then the drums...Danny is the greatest...sometimes all you saw was a blur of drum sticks...Sober... crowd goes wild again... concentration camp march, and then sperm...loseing my voice by this time... another new funky cool intro, left me guessing again... Opiate... naked tribsmen jumping up and down, camels and elephants fucking,LOL, kick ass drum outro..i swear.. when maynard is not singing he looks like a marionett puppet and the music is his strings, snuck a camera in, ran outta film before this one was over :( end of the night... "this is about smart real estate investments, and that happy light-as-a-feather feeling" LOL "this one is called enema" nema... not "onema" "eyenema" or "eenama" just enema, which would leade me to believe the cd is pronounced "aeni ma" they showed the video januarie :P he switches up the order of the Fuck all the screwed up things in society lines a little "Thank you, Good nite" all walk off, one at a time, maynard first, throws water to crowd with cap on, Danny last, throws gatorade bottle, cap off, and a handful (about 10) of drumsticks, itchy and scratchy theme plays, and then the prodigy sets up... like i said...one hell of a night...to avoid post TOOL depression i just had to type all of this up...before Tool my friend asks: "has any of you guys seen tool live yet?" "i have" "are they any good, because some bands just suck live" guy in front of us laughs i reply with a gross understatement "They're bad!!" after the show "Will, you were right, they kicked ass!!" no shit!!! somewhere in between all those songs mayanrd talks about opening up your heart to all different kinds of music at this festivle , very cool.."Going through their industrial rock motions" Rolling stone mag... my ass...they had something different going for almost every song, well thats all, if you read through all of this, great..if not oh well, i needed to do this btw..i read a review about not listening ta TOOL a few days before the show, i played not only in the preceding days but all the way there about an hour...it did not lessen the experience one bit...nor did reading any previous reviews

Review written by: Ken Marcy (SpidrKngFu@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/09/97 23:29:27 I must admit that I attended Lollapalooza a little bummed out, due to the fact that Korn wasn't playing. Korn and Tool is a dream combination. My dissapointment would soon cease though. The Tool set began to set up right after sun down. They started out on a good note by entertaining the crowd with a pop version of "Hooker with a Penis" and clips of Bill Hicks comedy. Then the lights went down and the smoke box went up. At first there was a little rumbling, soon to be drowned out by the guitar strains of "Hooker with a Penis". I must admit(being a dedicated Tool fan)I didn't think I would be shocked. I was wrong. Maynard came on stage with a blond wig and mustache and pilot glasses. I didn't even recognize him at first. Midway through the song the disguise was removed and he switched to the fake-tits, spandex, wig, and make-up. The song really made an impact to say the least, and I deffinately got the feeling of mockery as Maynard danced seductively in drag and sang "Buy my new record!" Hahahaha. The remainder of the set was mostly songs from "Aenima", with the exception of "Crawl Away", "Sober", "Opiate", and the amazing Zep cover, "No Quarter". They ended with "Aenema" appropriately, and Maynard introduced it as a song about "smart real estate investments" The song was performed to perfection and the video was amazing, particulary a scene involving elephants. All in all it was an amazing set. I was too dazed by Tool to half-way pay attention to the Prodigy set. The highlight for me was "Stinkfist". Definately try to see Tool live, you will not be dissapointed.

Review written by: Derrick Oien (doien@calstatela.edu) Review posted on: 08/09/97 22:42:53 My brother in law turned me on to Tool recently. After several weeks of nonstop playing of Aenima I was hooked. Had to see them at Lollapalooza and I was curious about the Prodigy hype. Right before they came on I took out my earplugs because I realized I never have been able to play Tool loud enough and why ruin the opportunity. Maynard came out looking like Freddie Mercury singing Hooker and I was thinking ,'Hmm strange look, but since I didn't really know anything about the band I said well their music rocks so whatever." Before the next song (Stinkfist) He swithced to a prostitute style wig and the boobs and bra thing. Ok then I got it. Unbelievable concert, It was up there for me with some of the best concerts I have been to the last couple of years (Tied with Ministry/Jesus Lizard and Rev. Horton Heat/Butthole Surfers) I will be at any show of theirs that I can go to. Prodigy was interesting but didn't impress although I found Tricky very intriguing.

Review written by: Lauren Carr (poot5150@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/09/97 21:32:26 Once again Tool put on an amazing show. I was a little disapointed that they played so many songs off the new album while they only played a few older songs. The highlight of their set was when they played No Quarter. This was the first time I had seen Tool play this live and it was absolutely incredibly. Also worth noting: It was great to see one of my favorite bands, Failure, playing with Tool once again. They put on a great show.

Review written by: Quang Ho (ratm10@juno.com) Review posted on: 08/09/97 19:11:07 Tool was one of the best performances especialy the ahem-elephants and camels behind the stage. However, Tool took a little too long. They were cool for the first few songs but it just got straight-out too long. They had to do a double-set because Korn wasn't there. Overall, I thought Lollapalooza wasn't well-organized because of the order of the bands, the size of the venue, and the band, "James." Tool was cool bu took too long

Review written by: Master Reviewer (Munkeynil@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/09/97 18:06:34 One word. WOW. I never dreamed that i would reach total enlightenment at a festival containing mindless badasses like snoop doggy dog etc. But my god tool was incredible. I was all ready for maynard to march out onstage in his drag gettup, but to my s uprise one of the roadies grabbed the mic and started singing. But wait-its maynard!! After singing hooker with a penis throwing up the two fingered devil sign the whole time, he then shed that attire and put on the drag. He did the rest of the songs like that-H., Sober, Opiate, No Quarter, 46 & 2, Crawl Away, Stinkfist, and closing of course with nema. Forgive me if i forget to mention a few songs, but with all the visual stuff they were putting out my mind was exploding. Throughout the show maynard was his usual self, bending his body and sitting in positions not humanly possible. Although it was one of the best 1 hour 15 min of my life, my only regret was that they didn't play third eye.

Review written by: CHRiS MCGEE (O0oFLUXo0o@AOL.COM) Review posted on: 08/09/97 14:44:55 ALL i CAN SAY iS FOR MY FiRST TOOL CONCERT (There were other bands?) is that i was soo impressed with what i saw i cried during stinkfist (both versions) and sober and H. and ESPECIALLY during Eulogy, mainly because i was so blown away by how AWESOME they are live. I have been for a long time and my expectations of them in concert were M O R E Than exceeded! Maynard came out dressed like a pimp and did Hooker (duh!) (BTW the whole time i was there i was soo sick i couldnt sit up due to i might vomit! But as soon as they came on stage i was FiNE! Maynard took off his pimp suit put on a big brown afro wig and speedily applied lipstick to most of his face before blowing me away with the original (sorda) version of stinkfist and then right into the second version (even cooler!!) Eulogy was VERY iMPRESSiVE!!! After having seen TOOL for my first time i can now say that they are *THE* most impressive band i have ever seen!!!!!!!!!! p.s. all the security gaurds that threw me back over the fence 3 times can goto hell!!! T H A N K Y O U ! ! ! ! !

Review written by: Budtoker (budtoker@earthlink.net) Review posted on: 08/09/97 06:18:03 Oh my god....this is the second time i have seen TOOL (universal ampitheater was first) i would have paid over 100 bucks just to see TOOL. unbelieavable. first, after the tool fans were done yelling at snoop to get off the stage the roadies started testing, we heard a n interesting acoustic "hooker with a penis" then the lights went out and the nima "smokebox" was displayed on all the monitors. Maynard came out sporting a cool wig and mustache which he shed for his wig and tits later on... the setlist was as everyone else had described and the performance was absolutely unbelieavable... the pit on the lawn was pretty cool (even had a mini bon-fire most of the time :) ) im not going to waste any more time. if you have tickets to lollapalooza i suggest actually (kabir's gonna kill me) stop listening to tool for a few days before the concert. trust me. get tool out of your mind and be prepared to be reborn again. [Note from Kabir -- Hey, I go weeks without Tool sometimes. But before I go to any show, I avoid listening to a band for a day or so.] (nema is an awesome video) so much beer & pot was at lolla that everyone had shit passed to them at least 6 times throughout the night, the guy with the (they wont card you if u have this stamp) came by and got us all free beer so...but shrooms, or acid would be killer. anything to hallucinate would have made you see god, and he was bald with lipstick and tits.

Review written by: Eric Vierling (Vierling@pe.net) Review posted on: 08/09/97 04:35:16 I just got back from Lollapalooza and it ruled. Maynard came out looking like a weird 80's rocker guy with shaggy hair and a mustache, which he quickly shed to reveal a brown beehive and breasts They even played No Quarter, but instead of saying the "under 25" thing, He said that it was an old song and that they didn't write it. The setlist went something like this: Hooker with a penis Stinkfist 46&2 Crawl Away H. No Quarter Sober w/intro Opiate aenema That was about it, but sober and No Quarter might actually be reversed. BTW, Before Aenema, Maynard said that the song was about real estate instead of the Danny'e enema story. There was also this cool Tool fan that I met there called Chris and if Chris reads this, e-mail me.

Review written by: John Cox (jlbcox@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/09/97 04:25:01 I think tool has been keeping with the kick ass show. Was that Perry singing for Maynard? I guess Maynard was still trying to shove those big juicy tits into his bra.

Review written by: Jeff (jr_miller@earthlink.net) Review posted on: 08/09/97 03:27:23 Well I made it out to Devore to see Tool play at Lollapalooza. My seat was too far away so I sneaked down to the front for Tool. The set list for Tool is as follows: Hooker, Stinkfist, 46&2, Crawl Away (E), Eulogy, H., Sober, No 25., Opiate, Aenema. Maynard presented himself in black stretch pants, a blue bra (about c cups) and black high heels. He seemed quite comfortable in the outfit. It was an amazing set, the band was very tight. I am glad made it out to see the show.
