Review written by: Michaela G. (mgratzek@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 09/01/98 14:41:59 I saw Tool at the July 16th Ozzfest at Deer Creek Ampitheatre in Indianapolis. It kicked a**! It was far and away the best concert I have ever been to!! People went ape-shit when Tool started to play. They ripped up the grass from the lawn in massive chunks and began to throw it!! The sky was looked like the armagedon WAS near!! Others set their personal belongings on fire, such as blankets, and began to mosh around the blazing fires!! Needless to say, Deer Creek officials were none to pleased!! I was standing in the Pavillion, and got pelted with a massive chunk! The effects and lighting was absolutely astounding!! Two VERY enthusiastic thumbs up!!

Review written by: Kyle Dickey (kyle.d.dickey) Review posted on: 08/28/98 10:14:23 The day was long and hot at Ozzfest. The parade of half-talent korn carbon copies seemed as though it would never end. As dusk neared, my hopes grew as the first headliner, Megadeth, took the stage. Now we all thought that Megadeth was awesome back in the day, admit it. So naturally I was interested in what kind of live show they would put on. They sucked. Bad. But that is alright because Tool made up for every piece of crap band on the tour. You could have had 50 junk bands play that day and it still would have been worth it. Like every other time I've seen them, they just walked out on stage with no introduction and just stood there. Somehow they make even that theatrical without trying. Maynard was dressed up like a babtist minister, complete with a white wig and a bible. From where I was sitting, he looked a lot like col. sanders. I think the whole kabuki/ponytail/fake breast outfit from 97 was cooler, but that's alright. They opened up with PART OF ME and it hit the fan. I won't go into the whole sod throwing thing because I'm sure you are sick of hearing about it by now, but it was incredible. They played the usual songs, STINKFIST, SOBER, PRISON SEX, OPIATE, EULOGY,and H. But I was happy to hear PART OF ME and FLOOD, which I didn't expect. I was hoping for 46&2, HOOKER, or NO QUARTER, but they kept it pretty short. One reason might be that Ozzy plays way too long and Deer Creek has a late night noise ordinance, or maybe we just made Maynard angry. He looked that way. I've got to say I respect Ozzy for not dying yet and all that, but Tool was who I came to see and they delivered. Not that they played everything i wanted to hear, but because what they did play was so incredible. They have started blending their sound together in a way that the songs kind of connect. They use this effect-laden guitar noise and electronic percussion to layer their way into the next song. One noteable example was Eulogy. They used this underlying effected bass sound on the bottom and worked in the tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-. Then danny started with the drag tempo cymbal part and eventually Maynard broke out that talkbox/hairdryer vocal changer for the wah-wah part. The end result is the songs sneak up on you because they improvise so much at the beginning. Tool is the best damn band I have ever seen or herad.

Review written by: steve tipton (kawprez666@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 08/26/98 18:12:53 oh shit i have seen tool 3 times and the Ozzfest was the shit(the all rocked but this had the most crowd particpation). it was just gettin dusk and the sun began to set tool opens up with nima. the crowd, including me, jump into the pit. next thing i notice is that the crowd begins to throw shoes shirts pants drinks and inthing they can get a hold of, including the ground. Deer Creek has lay down grass that is put in sections and easily tore up. So waged the war of throwing objest from pavilion to lawn seats. then the next thing that i never expected, people started bomb fires and we moshed in the fire around the fires it was great. Then I was kinda sad cause tool was done to make room for ozzy. i like ozzy but tool to me headlined that tour, and should have played till dawn. tool kicks ass

Review written by: Whatever (whatever@whatever.com) Review posted on: 08/06/98 14:46:09 What can i say, i wasn't sure if tool could top the two times i saw them before, but they really blew me away. The grass throwing and burning was kinda cool for about ten minutes, but then it was just a distraction. i went home picking dirt clumps out o f my hair and knocking dirt clods out of my shoes. Maynaard came out with a suite on and had a book, said something to the extent of "who all here is ready for the good word of the lord." a bunch of people cheered (the sheep) and i kinda embarrassedly fliped maynaard off., but was happy to hear him go, " well, you came to the wrong place" then he went in to "part of me" it was really cool. i loved the stip tease. It was soooo cool. they went on and played their set. the new videos were awesome, and you gotta love seeing elephants and girraffes hump on that big screen projector! The l ighting was unbelieveable. they really went all out. I saw them once when they had like three lights, red, blue and regular. this time they had a bunch of cool shit. they also have a new disc. they hang on stage. i got no idea what it is about. Mayn aard said something like, "this must be an all ages show" when he saw everyone throwing grass and trash. He also said ,"work hard and stay in school" and then something about how ozzy was gonna be on next. maynaard was just awesome on stage. he was down to his boxers and doing his thing on stage that makes you just wonder, how can anyone do that, or stand like that and keep their balance. I dunno, but it was just mezmorizing. ozzfest sucked other than that. I left for ozzy, and it was sooooo easy to leave the parking lot. The other bands before tool thought that heavy meant loud, so they turned up so loud i couldn't tell what the singers were saying and what alot of the guit ars were doing. i felt my throat vibrate. it sucked. I did hear coal chamber play the duh duh duh duh part in korns blind song in most of their songs. they sucked! i got my ticked signed by pete from ultraspank, and i was extremely impressed with system of a down on the second stage. they were sooooo cool! their guitarists are animals! oh yeah, anyone else thing thirty (well 28) bucks was a bit too fucking much for tickets, yeah that would be cheap at a metallica concert, but who really cares about their fans? I didn't buy the tool shirt cus of that, even though it was cool.

Review written by: Strahd (ostomo@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/23/98 04:00:51 Where to begin...I saw nearly all the mainstage had to offer except for the Incubus performance. I watched about two minutes of it (which began with a very very poor sound setup, so poor you could barely hear anything) and then left. I came back for Coal Chamber, which for a while was the biggest hit of the night. My friend Ribcage had been tellin' me this band kicked, and he wasn't lying. They put on a great show, even if you're not into hard heavy rock (which I'm not). Then Sevendust came out. Maybe it's just me, but I was expecting more from these guys. They kept begging for a mosh pit that never happened, and all through the show the lead singer kept throughing out the band's name, even though it was on a giant screen above the stage. At one point he even says, "I'm not gonna lie to ya! We are Sevendust!" Hmm.....why would you lie to me, Mr. Buy-my-records? Anyway, moving on....oh yeah, I think this was the band that went into the Sweet Home Alabama/Walk didly. Which I, and everyone else from what I saw, liked. You could tell one thing, there were a LOT of Pantera fans in the audience. Then came Limp Bizkit. I liked them, lots of comedy relief, and a giant toilet to boot. At one point Posh Spice (I think) of the Spice Girls gets flushed. The lead singer is holding up her cardboard cutout, and says, "How many of you guys out there would like to butt fuck the hell out of the Spice Girls?" [crowds goes crazy] "How many of you ladies out there would like to bitch slap the hell out of the Spice Girls?" [crowd again goes crazy] And she gets flushed. There were a George Micheal cover/parody also, which was different. Then there was Megadeth....they were good I suppose. It just wasn't a Megadeth show I guess. The "I have a 10 inch cock" guitar solos seemed a bit out of place. I recognized two songs, Sweating Bullets and Symphony of Destruction. I'm assuming most of the songs were from the Cryptic Writings album. I didn't hear anything from Youthanasia. Oh well. Someone commented earlier about Dave being Mr. Ego. Fucking yes he is. I can't explain it, but if you were there you saw it glowing off of him. Blah. And then came Tool. Maynard steps out in a light-blue looking suit (this is all being viewed from the lawn mind you) and a white wig I think, and says, "Care to hear a little of the good Lord's word?" Everyone yells YEAH!!! "Then you've come to the wrong place." Again the crowd yells YEAH!!! At this point I tell the guy I'm with, "Be ready for anything, Tool fans are the best fans." They rip into Part of Me and at some point during the song the trash/grass fiasco begins. I won't go into that too deeply as everyone else already has. Maynard (and the rest of the band) were by no means impressed by this. At the end of Part of Me he says, "I see we have the all ages crowd with us tonight." No one clues in on the insult. Also, toward the end, maybe even after Flood, everyone begins to chant WE WANT TOOL repeatedly. Maynard says, "Yes that's right, we're called Stay in School." Shortly after Tool left the stage my friend, who had never seen Tool and only real came to see Limp Bizkit's giant toilet, says to me, "Man, you're right. Tool fans are the best fans!" Then Ozzy came on, blah blah. It was good I guess but he was before my time. I might as well go into some detail about it though since no one else really has yet. "As I was coming into..this part of the country some people began telling me things...you have to be careful Ozzy, you're in the Bible Belt now, you have to be careful, this is the Bible Belt. -- What the fuck is the Bible Belt? Are we in the Bible Belt?" NOOOO!!!! "Are we in the Ozzy Belt?" YESSSSS!!!! Also, at some point he says, "Over the years, everyone's tried to say what Ozzy represents and what Ozzy stands for, and if there's anyone here tonight that wants to change Ozzy's religion I have one thing to say to you. Fuck you. Come on, say it with me. Fuck you!" FUCK YOU! "Fuck you!" FUCK YOU! And so on. Good show, much respect to all the bands. As far as second stage went, I don't have a clue. Anyway, good luck getting Tool into Deer Creek next year...or any other time for that matter... Lastly, I saw one fight. And lots and lots of titties. And Tool shirts. I stopped counting the Tool shirts after about 32. The only thing nearly as popular, besides Ozzy shirts, seemed to be White Zombie apparal. Anyway, great show. Strahd out.

Review written by: Ribcage (raygun@kiva.net) Review posted on: 07/21/98 20:00:43 this was an interesting concert for me because i own an albulm from every band that played on main stage, and some on second stage. the day started off with INCUBUS, a band i like very much. then on to one of my favorite bands off all time COAL CHAMBER. they kicked fuckin ass, had to be one of the highlights of the day for me. for any COAL CHAMBER fans out there they did a new song which will be on their new albulm in Feb. SEVENDUST was next, another great band, in the middle of "Too Close To Hate" they broke down into "Sweet Home Alabama" and then into "Walk" by Pantera. after that was the next highlight for me, SOULFLY, Max is back. they did some old Sepultura songs like "Spit" "Attitude" and "Refuse/Resist". another fuckin kick ass performance. the next band was LIMP BIZKIT, don't get me wrong i love them, a great fuckin band, but the performance was off. the sound quality too. the stage comedy and giant toilet were cool though. and then MEGADETH, blah blah blah, another burnout hair metal band who should pack it up and get the fuck out. and finally what i had been waiting for, the master geeks themselves, TOOL. Maynard was dressed up like some kind of born again, money grubbing, TV avangelist. the setlist was as follows: Part Of Me, Stinkfist (extended), Prison Sex (extended), H., Sober, Eulogy (with a cool-ass intro and outro), and then Opiate which led into Flood. the lighting was fuckin awsome, the sound was great, the show was great. 'nuff said. as for the grass riot, it's true, the place turned into a fuckin warzone. i was on the lawn where it was the worst. the mosh pit bonfires were among the chaos as well. TOOL had to have been the biggest highlight of the night for me. i didn't stick around much for Ozzy, i'm not much of a fan, but he did do "War Pigs" and "Paranoid" and he did have Mike Bordin from Faith No More on drums which was cool. this my first time for all the bands but my second for TOOL. some of the second stage bands i'm a fan of were SNOT and ULTRASPANK, both cool. now i'm ready for the KORN Family Values tour!!!!

Review written by: andrew joseff (anewcomb@kconline.com) Review posted on: 07/21/98 16:55:30 1st off let me say tool is the greatest band ever. their shows are amazing. at the show in indy the crowd was going insane. just after a couple songs by tool the crowd started to rip apart the ground on the lawn area and throwing it everywhere. it was tot al chaos. sod was flying everywhere while tool was playing. tool's set list was something you couldn't complain with. of course they played the favorites like stinkfist, eulogy, and sober. but they also threw in flood, h, prison sex, and opiate not to men tion a couple other kick ass songs. it was the 2nd time to seem em live. they put on the greatest show and have the best sound in music today.

Review written by: Matt (dls53082@netusa1.net) Review posted on: 07/21/98 07:48:29 Well, TOOL kicked ass. they fucken out played ozzy. it was fucken funny seeing all the people going crazy as soon as they got on stage. at first people were just throwing paper cups and shit, then suddenly up came the fuckin sod. people where even throwing glass bottles and setting fires. before ozzfest people tod me tool sucked live, they are all fuck stupid.

Review written by: Akira (akira69@rocketmail.com) Review posted on: 07/20/98 04:28:17 How to begin, words are hard to explain Tool, other than FUCKING AMAZING! I loved every song, even though the crowd was setting fire to the lawn and ripping it apart at the same time! I got a bloody nose from being hit with a chunk of sod as we were pulling it up. It didn't take away from the experience at all in my opinion. I was so damn happy to see Tool I didn't care. My friend was wearing a chunk of sod on his head as a wig, but that's normal for him. I loved evey second of the set that they did, although Maynard seemed a little pissed when he was leaving, probably because how we were ripping the ground up while they were playing. LOL! That was my first concert, and I loved it! Even though I have a sunburn, and had a headache the next day. In my opinion, all Ozzfest was missing was KoRn.

Review written by: Jason (gouki@ccrtc.com) Review posted on: 07/20/98 01:19:00 As the rest of teh reviews have stated, the Tool set got a little out of hand. See, at first it was just trash, which wasn't that annoying, because paper cups don't hurt. Then as a friend of a friend of mine ran out of trash to throw, he started diging up teh dirt and tossing it, yep, he started it. Which I though was funny at teh moment, then everyone started doing it, and you could NOT pay attention to Tool, which pissed me off. Of course when you get that many drunk and high ppl together, you've got to expect that type of shit. I just hope they come back here and play an indoor concert, so I might enjoy it a little.

Review written by: Spynn (spynncynna@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/19/98 19:17:47 If there is nothing else that I remember about OzzFest, I will always remember how Tool tore the Deer Creek Music Center to pieces! Everyone was so crazy about Tool that they started by throwing around all the trash that was up in the lawn, it looked like a fucking storm. Then they started ripping up the turf and tossing it around. Shit went foul then and everyone started rushing the stage. After security got everyone out of there and back to the lawn, fires started and people were running around like a bunch of fucking psychos!! All in all, it was the best fucking thing that I've ever experienced. TOOL FUCKING ROCKS!!!! Indianapolis will never forget that... Maynard, I love you. ;}-~ Spynn

Review written by: Master Reviewer (wrench1@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/17/98 22:42:36 The show basically kicked ass...Noone quite went into detail about how bad the throwing got. As somebody said, At first it was cups, mostly full of beer and coke, flying all over the place, thousands of people in one huge massive food fight. I was in the really pavilian, but within perfect throwing distance from the lawn. People started throwing fries and then they figured out they could rip up sod from the ground, and that was appearently fun. I got beer and dirt all over my Tool hat. dammit. The sod squares got huge. The biggest one I saw was about 3X8, two kids threw it and got taken out. At first it was cool, but they wouldn't fucking QUIT!...There were huge chuks of dried up dirt covering the seets, the whole place was infested with dust(dirt) in the air, you almost could see the other side of the pavilion at certain moments. It turned into a war between the lawn and upper pavilion, All around the audience. I missed about four songs, trying to dodge the damn chunks of sod, which pissed me off. At about eulogy, it died down, basically completely behind me. That was cool. Then the fires started; people in the lawn were catching clothes on fire and dancing around the fires like indians, but moshing at the, everybody got off on that. Then the security guards came around with fire extinguishers, and put them out, but more started just as fast. 4 was the maximum number of fires I saw simultaniously burning, but there was probably a total of 11 fires during tools set. Overall the show was cool, after ozzy, dirty and tired, I left w/my brother.

Review written by: Nathan Engelbert (oscillated@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/17/98 04:01:52 ok, where to begin. well, there was a short intro before tool took the stage. justin has hair and adam cut his. they had some R2D2 looking lighting modules around the stage and danny's set was to the left. maynard was dressed in a funky old-looking suit with a tie that read something to the effect of "Jesus is the way". he entered stage carrying a bible and discarded it as they began to play. he was also wearing a gray wig that fell off during stinkfist. after that still during stinkfist he began to put on a strip tease during the little break thing they do live. he removed everything but his underwear, scooby snacks boxers, and his socks. during prison sex he took off the socks and i was lucky enough to catch one of these gross souvenirs. overall, i thought the show seemed short, but i'm used to seeing them outside a tour like ozzfest. the setlist is as follows (same punctuation and all). note...this is a setlist torn off the stage after the show: PART OF ME STINKFIST PRISON SEX H. SOBER EULOGY OPIATE- FLOOD i was the bright red haired kid in the front row.

Review written by: Brian Singleton (singletb@purdue.edu) Review posted on: 07/17/98 01:56:45 Well, well, well, what a day at Ozzfest! I could talk about who was good and who really sucked, but I won't. I will talk about the TOOL set. The reverend Maynard appeared once again in his suit. He asked the crowd if they came to hear the teachings of god, and then he went on to say, "well, you came to the wrong place" Then the band whipped into the first song "Part of me." It rocked, but wasn't quite loud enough, somehow though by the end of the song the volume was quite perfect. Set List: 1.Part of me 2.Stinkfist 3.Prison Sex 4.H 5.Sober 6.Eulogy 7.Opiate 8.Some song I haven never heard in my life (new? cover?) During "Stinkfist" Maynard began to strip off the suit, and the crowd started to get rowdy. Things first began with people throwing cups and other shit like that. After all the cups and trash were gone people began to rip up the sod in the lawn. We aren't talking little chunks of grass here either, we are talking HUGE chunks. I was just trying to watch the show, but somehow found myself trying to dodge flying grass. After "Stinkfist" Maynard commented, "this must be an all ages show." I got a good kick out of that one. Then, as one might expect the idiots began moshing, and pretty soon fires were being lit on the lawn. Fire after fire kept being lit. It was really unfortunate because they deffinately drew attention away from TOOL's excellent performance. Maynard seemed to leave the stage very disgusted, and just commented that Ozzy would be on in a little bit. He didn't sound very happy. I find it funny that the one band that is anti-moshing/slam dancing had the craziest shit going on during their set, while bands that were begging for a mosh pit couldn't get one going for anything. I would have perfered to WATCH TOOL instead of the flying grass, but I guess it just goes to show what effect TOOL has on people.

Review written by: KILGORETK-421 (Hate2Feel@yahoo.com) Review posted on: 07/16/98 11:32:51 OK, here's the story, showed up, sttod around and was totally uninterested until my favorite band came on, not Tool, KILGORE! If you go to the OzzFest check out Kilgore, they are absolutely incredible! They have the most energy out of any band, and Jay, the vocalist in the world, better than Maynard. Argue that all you want but Jay is GOD! They come from Rhode Island and their making a native Rhode Islander proud. Go buy their albums "Blue Collar Solitude" and "Search for Reason" THey are awsome. Soulfly was cool, Megadeth sucked, Tool rocked. . . KILGORE WAS THE DAMN BEST!!!
