Review written by: Tow__up (Tow__up@yahoo.com) Review posted on: 08/16/98 17:38:03 THIS WAS MY SECOND TIME SEEING TOOL. MY BROTHER WENT WITH ME JUST SO I WOULD HAVE SOMEONE TO GO WITH TO OZZFEST. SO IF IT WASNT FOR HIM NONE OF THIS GREAT EXPERIENCE WOULD HAVE EVER HAPPENED. SO LIKE A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE SHOW I GOT THIS E-MAIL FROM ADAM OFF THE TOOL HOOK-UP LIST. SO I MET UP WITH ADAM AT THE SHOW SO I WOULD HAVE A REAL TOOL FAN WITH ME SO I COULD ENJOY THE SHOW TO ITS FULLEST. SO WE MET UP AND SINCE HE HAD BETTER SEATS THAN I DID (I HAD ROW L-ZZ), I WENT SAT WITH HIM ON ROW LC-RR OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. DURING MEGADEATH I WAS STARTING TO FEEL A LITTLE SICK TO MY STOMACH. I DIDNT KNOW IF IT WAS THE HOT DOG I HAD JUST EATEN OR IF IT WAS THE MUSIC. WELL, WHEN MEGADEATH FINISHED ADAM AND I BEGAN DISCUSSING WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE SHOW. I PREDICTED THAT THEY WOULD PLAY THEIR HARDER MUSIC OFF OF OPIATE SINCE THIS WAS A HARD ROCK FESTIVAL. ADAM REALLY DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT FROM WHAT I REMEMBER. AT ABOUT FIVE MINUTES BEFORE TOOL WAS SCHEDULED TO BE ON STAGE,EERIE TOOL-LIKE SOUND EFFECTS WERE PLAYING AND THE ROADIES STILL WERE TRYING TO SET UP THE SCREEN. I COULDNT TELL EXACTLY WHAT WAS GOING ON. SO TOOL FINALLY TOOK THE STAGE AND MAYNARD WAS DRESSED IN A SUIT AND TIE WITH A GRAY WIG ON. HE WAS MOCKING THE PREACHERS YOU SEE ON TV I BELIEVE. SO THEY STARTED OUT WITH PART OF ME AND I WASNT SURPRISED SINCE THAT IS ONE OF THEIR HARDEST SONGS THEY HAVE. THEN MAYNARD INTRODUCED BUZZ FROM THE MELVINS ONTO THE STAGE AND AND THEY PLAYED STINTFIST WITH THE EXTRA PART THEY PLAY LIVE. THEN THEY PLAYED THE PEACH COVER YOU LIED. WHEN TOOL BEGAN THE SONG I WAS TRYING TO NAME IT; I RECONIZED IT BUT I DIDNT KNOW THE NAME OF IT. I THOUGHT IT WAS NO QUATER BUT ADAM TOLD ME THAT I WAS YOU LIED. SO THEY PLAYED THAT WITH BUZZ ALSO. AFTER THAT YOU COULD HEAR (-) IONS PLAYING OVER THE SPEAKERS FOR ABOUT A MINUTE. THEN TOOL HAD ABOUT A TEN MINUTE JAM SESSION/INTORODUCTION BEFORE GOING INTO SOBER LIKE THEY DO WHEN THEY PLAY LIVE. THEN THEY PLAYED THIRD EYE. THAT BLEW ME AWAY BECAUSE I JUST KNEW THAT THEY WERENT GOING TO PLAY THAT FOR THE WORLD. NEXT WAS NEMA. TO ME THIS WAS THE CLIMAX OF THE WHOLE SHOW. THEN MAYNARD SAID THAT THIS WAS GOING TO BE THE LAST SONG AND THAT THEY WANTED EVERYONE TO START CHANTING FOR OZZY AND NOT TO QUIT UNTIL HE GETS ON STAGE. SO THEY PLAYED JERK-OFF AND FINISHED IT PERFECTLY. THEY SHOWED THE USUAL EFFECTS ON THE SCREENS LIKE WHEN THEY PLAYED SOBER IT SHOWED AN EYE BEING SQUIRTED WITH SOME KIND OF LIQUID LIKE IN THE MIDDLE OF A SURGERY. AFTER THE SHOW I NOTICED HOW MY STOMACH WAS FEELING A HUNDRED PERCENT BETTER AND I DIDNT EVEN NOTICE IT DURING THE SHOW BECAUSE I WAS SO INTO IT. THEY ASLO HAD THIS BIG GONG LOOKING THING ON THE STAGE. I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT IT SO IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT E- MAIL ME WITH YOUR INFORMATION. ALSO IF YOU'D LIKE TO READ MY OTHER REVIEW OF THE MEMPHIS SHOW ITS OVER THERE TOO SO CHECK THAT OUT IF YOU WANT. THANKS ADAM, NOLAN, AND MICHELLE FOR METTING UP WITH ME. IT WAS A BLAST. IF ANYONE HAS ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS ABOUT ANYTHING E-MAIL ME. THANX.

Review written by: Nathan Dothager (eld@fgi.net) Review posted on: 08/06/98 18:03:48 I went to ozzfest last year, only to see Black Sabbath and it was damn cool. I went to see ozzfest this year to see Tool and Melvins, and it was waaaaayyyyyy fucking cooler. I got King B's autograph and i saw Adam Jones behind the second stage. I tried to get Adam 's autograph, but he either didnt want to or he didnt hear me. He might have been surprised that someone actually knew him. I also thought that St louis was an awsome crowd, and i was surprised to hear people say that we were not. I was da mn near floored when i saw everyone get up on their feet for them. And that showed me that there are a lot more Tool fans than i thought. I also thought it was funny how Maynard made fun of the crowd,,, and everyone was like taking him seriously. well im done... bye bye. Nathan Dothager

Review written by: Jessica (toolage@ibm.net) Review posted on: 08/06/98 14:26:03 Awesome show! I was 7 rows from them and it was great. But,not as great as last year's Lollapalooza show in St.Louis. They spent around 5-10 minutes playing some drum solo while everyone but Danny messed around.....I'm assuming something "technical" went wrong. But the show was still really good. I especially liked how Maynard came out dressed as an old guy. :)

Review written by: Nick Oldham (mark@rollanet.org) Review posted on: 08/04/98 17:12:42 I'm sorry. In my review I said that "You Lied" was a Redd Kross cover. At the show, I didn't know what the song was, and my friend there told me that. When I saw that all the other reviews that knew what the song was said it was by Peach, I asked my friend again. I'm not sure if this is 100% accurate, but I think he said that he found an MP3 of "You Lied" on another site and it said the song was by Redd Kross. So, shame on that site. I can't play MP3's, so I had no reason to visit the MP3 section on t.d.n. If I had, I obviously would have seen that "You Lied" is indeed a Peach cover. I regret the error. Free publicity for Dwayne Welty...

Review written by: T-Wizard (Redmage@swbell.net) Review posted on: 08/04/98 01:07:17 I thought the show was great! I am a new Tool fan and was impressed enough to go out and purchase all three albums. There was a lull in the show, but it was cool. I can't wait until they headline in St. Louis. They will have more time to play their asses off. Now to everyone that knocked the St. Louis fans for not being into it... I was into it, but let's face facts... It was the Ozfest not the Tool fest and most people were there to see Ozzy! So get a grip and leave the St. Louis Fans alone. They rocked through Ozzy! You could hear the crowd singing everyone of his songs! It was the Ozfest... T-Wizard

Review written by: Alex (Super Juy@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/02/98 21:32:18 All I can say is, Tool is the best live band you will ever see. This was my second time seeing them, and although it wasn't as impressive as my first (July 12, 1997 at the Sony Entertainment Center in Camden, NJ, as part of Lollapalooza), it was still incredible (and that first one was really hard to beat anyway). They opened with "Part of Me"--my least favorite Tool song, but good because I was hoping to hear some selections from Opiate. Then Buzz from the Melvins came out for two songs, one of which was that Peach cover "You Lied." I had never heard the song before, and I loved it. Someone else has already posted the set list in order, so I won't bother to be repetitive. What that person didn't mention was that, before "Sober," there was a cool-sounding but very unnecessary segue of about seven minutes. It was entertaining for the first few minutes, but then it went from being ear candy to being a lull in the music. It got really boring and I'm sure I wasn't the only one saying, "Okay, this is getting old." It was cool, but seven minutes?! That in combination with a slightly-abbreviated "Third Eye" took up about a third of their set! They could have played "Undertow" (my personal favorite) or anything else off that album or even a shortened "Eulogy." I would have liked to hear more Undertow songs ("Sober" was the only one) or at least something else cool ("Cold and Ugly," "Opiate," the aforementioned "Eulogy" etc., etc.). I'm not knocking the band, though. They still put on a great show. I will see them every chance I get from now on. And I think I'll be looking for that Peach record, too. Watching Tool live just blows me away and makes me wish Alice in Chains would start headlining big tours again.

Review written by: Jeremy (tricky4iz@aol.com) Review posted on: 08/02/98 19:18:41 set list - Part Of Me Stinkfist (extended version w/ Buzz Osborne of the Melvins) You Lied (Peach cover song, also w/ Buzz) Sober (w/ extended intro) Third Eye nema Jerk-Off Overall I was rather disappointed by the performance. I've seen TOOL play live 6 times now and I really think they could have done a lot better than they did at Ozzfest. First of all they didn't play long enough and the songs that they did play lasted so long, if they had played shorter songs (i.e. not like "Third Eye" or "Sober" w/ such a long intro) they could have played a wider variety of their music. They play "You Lied" very well, as they did on their mini-tour in March. Bottom line is that I've seen them do much better. My E-mail address is included for all the Fuck You's I'm sure I will be receiving for saying that TOOL really didn't put on a very good performance.

Review written by: Nick Oldham (mark@rollanet.org) Review posted on: 08/01/98 15:57:19 I would have posted this sooner, but I went on vacation. I don't think most of these reviewers should be allowed to post since most of them don't know enough about Tool to post a good review. Tool should not be on a metal bill. They sound nothing like all the other bands, hence, I hated almost everyone except Tool, Ozzy and a couple others. Also, the fans of these metal bands don't understand Tool, so Tool's brilliance is wasted on them. I ignored the other fans when Tool took the stage, so my enjoyment was not tainted, but I liked their set at Lollapalooza last year better. Mostly because they got to play more songs then. Maynard came out dressed as a televangelist. He told the crowd that they were "the ugliest bunch of god's unholy children" he'd ever seen. He yelled at them to stop breeding, To use the condoms at the Trojan stand at the front of the park. He said he was kidding, but I didn't believe him. He was right. Those metalheads were the ugliest people I'd ever seen, too. Later, he said he didn't mean for the audience to stop "fucking." He said something like, "Go ahead. You can fuck right now. Don't mind us. We'll just be up here playing your little porno background music for you." Before "Stinkfist," he announced that "the Reverend Buzz Melvin" was here to help them out with a song called "Low Fiber Diet." Buzz played on "Stinkfist" and their cover of Redd Kross' "You Lied Again." It was real hard to see Buzz because of this bright light onstage. Also I wish they had raised their symmetrical screens before the show and not during. They were blocked by Danny's drums and their gong with the geometric figure on it. During "You Lied Again," Maynard took off his white wig. And in the 10 minute drums & feedback intro to "Sober," he went backstage and re-emerged in his boxers like he often performs in. I was glad they played "Third Eye," because I hadn't seen it live before. Before "AEnema," (sorry about the AE) Maynard said that from a distance, the song might seem to be about bad real estate choices. Danny seems a lot taller than 6'5". Maybe the other 3 are just short. Being a drummer, I enjoyed his solo before "Sober." Justin grew some hair since last summer. He was a little hard to see because of the bright light onstage. Adam cut a few inches off his hair since last summer. He was very hard to see because of the light. His solo at the near end of "Third Eye" is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard, hence, it almost made me cry when they played it live. One more thing about the screens: I really wish the screens would've shown close-ups of the band this year. I wanted to see what Maynard looked like in his costume close up. Now the setlist (again) 1. Part of Me 2. Stinkfist (w/ Buzz Melvin, and a solo between "...anything at all" and "I'll keep digging") 3. You Lied Again (Redd Kross cover tune with Buzz Melvin) 4. (-)Ions (shortened) 5. 10 min. drum solo & feedback intro/ Sober 6. Third Eye (only 4 "Prying open my third eye" at the end) 7. AEnema (with the "L. Ron Hubbard" and "Retro Anything" bars reversed) 8. Jerk-off (with extended solo and "My-Foot-Up-Your-Fucking Ass!" substituted for the last line. Killer show!!!

Review written by: Steve (slbrown@blazenet.net) Review posted on: 07/29/98 01:31:16 Overall it was a great day! Tool played great as usual and most of the other bands were good too. Have you ever noticed that when Tool plays live you find yourself really digging deep into yourself and thinking more clearly. I do. I couldn't ask anymore of them but to keep doing what they're doing. Here's a short summary of the bands that I saw: System of a down - Great! MUST SEE Snot - Good Melvins - Great Kilgore - Good Coal Chamber - Great Soulfly - Great Sevendust - Good Megadeth - Good, but a little to old school metal for me Tool - Forget about it I have to say that most of the bands came out and socialized with the crowd which I thought was a bonus. Also, there was a girl a couple of seats up from me, I was in row MM seat 156, she had blue jean shorts and a light blue halter top, really long hair and was really into to megadeth, e-mail me or if you know her tell her to e-mail me. Review written by: DL (Nail80m8) Review posted on: 07/29/98 01:01:10 I have been reading other reviews of the tool performance and some say the crowd was out of it. Well, you want to know why, because it was a terrible performance by tool. There was nothing to get into, there was no excitement. I was actually getting bo red after maynard left for about 10 minutes to change while the other members kept playing. So i just began to watch the videos which were at some moments better than the music. They must have wasted 20 minutes in all, which could have been used for act ual songs. The only way you could not care how bad they performed is if you were heavily intoxicated. Don't get me wrong, tool kicks ass and all but there performance was just plain boring. I liked their Lolla set a lot better. In my opinion tool shou ld have switched with soulfly. I spent a lot more energy listening to them then to tool. If tool plays like they did in St. Louis in other cities I think most people will be disappointed.

Review written by: cory (drowning37@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/28/98 21:51:13 The rest of the reviews did a pretty good job of covering the show but they did leave out the mass molestation of 12-16 year old girls by drunken hicks and security guards during tools performance.

Review written by: Aaron (ballewae@vuse.vanderbilt.edu) Review posted on: 07/28/98 21:49:28 here's the show. Part of Me stinkfits w/buzz You Lied Sober w/intro third eye Aenema Jerk-off During the first 4 songs, the bass was up way too high. It drowned out the guitar and maynard's voice a little. Maynard didn't seem very into it during those 4 songs either. Especially sober. Can't blame him considering how many times he's sung that song. Plus, why do they do that goddamn long-ass intro when they're limited on time? They could've done 2 more songs. By 3rd Eye, the sound was fixed, and it was great. They did it perfectly. 3rd eye was the highlight of the set for me. Maynard finally woke up and did his seizures, and pelvic thrusts, and marionette wiggles. Aenema was good. Nothing really notable except for a little lyric switch and everyone sang along. May I add a personal note to the fans? PLEASE DON'T SING EVERY FUCKING LYRIC TO STINKFIST AND AENEMA. I didn't come to hear YOU sing. I'm all for enjoying the show of course, but that just bugs me. Oh yeah, and women, that high pitched shriek is really not necessary. Jerk-Off was great. They went all out with that one. Added a neat little section to the middle too. All in all, I'd say this was the worst Tool show I've been to just because the first half the sound was so bad and the whole thing was too short. That's not to say it wasn't a good show though. I loved 'em:-) As for the rest of Ozzfest. Dont' bother showing up until 7pm. All the afternoon bands are pure GARBAGE. They just bark into the mic. I think those bands reminded me of the static you get when the cable TV goes out. Hard to discern any music, y'know? Especially coal chamber. What crap. And another thing- Why are 7dust and limp bizkit so popular? It's like they wrote one song and gave it 10 different titles and made an album out of that. Funny thing happened with Soulfly, another barking band. They "sang" and anti-prejudice song conveniently called "Prejudice". And afterwards, led the crowd in chanting "Fuck Hootie and the Blowfish." I thought that was really funny. I guess inciting mass hatred of someone because you don't like the music they play does not count as prejudice these days. Hey, I may be prejudiced but at least i'm not a hypocrite. Ozzy's performance was the best of the day. Funny videos. The crowd seemed like it was mostly there for Ozzy. I liked Tool better, but it IS his show afterall. One other thing. I got a recording of Tool's show. It's pretty good. I'll post it on my webpage one of these days. Be well folks. Aaron. BAAAAAAAAAAAA BAAAAAAAAAAA BAAAAAAAAAA

Review written by: Craig Atchison (shaggyclown@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/28/98 17:14:23 Well, first of all i would like to say that despite what some people have written about this concert, that i enjoyed it quite deeply. I waited all day for Tool and they could have played 2 songs and i wouldnt be dissapointed for the mere fact that it is Tool. There were 2 dissapointments....1: The crowd was dead. They were like at church or something. I dunno if it was the heat or what....and 2: The Riverport has a weak sound system. I listen to Tool louder in my room than that place. But, now for the good things about it. They opened up with Part of Me which was kind of expected if you've read the other reviews. If the crowd doesnt sing along at the part where Maynard yells "YOU ARE A PART OF ME" then they arent real Tool fans. Anyway, Stinkfist was next with Buzz Melvin(who was staying at the hotel i was), and it was pretty good. I thought the next song was a new one, but i found out it is You Lied, a Peach cover.Anyway, i loved that song. Then came the song i was waiting for, Third Eye. After that came a long period of (-)ions and useless distortion before finally kicking into Sober. I got a real kick out of Maynard when he said "You know we love you...but i have to say that you people are the ugliest bunch of gods unholy creations ive ever seen. You need to stop breeding" I mean, i know he was cutting the crowd down, but he was right. From Sober we get to nema which i didnt expect because i think its just a crowdpleaser. Then we end it with Jerk-off which got me pretty revved up. All in all, since it was my first Tool experience, id say it was a good show. I hope to see Tool sometime again since i missed thier Memphis show yesterday. A good word to you all...If you happen to see Tool live, dont just sit there dead...make some damn noise unlike the St. Louis show.

Review written by: Mike (overview@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/27/98 23:32:39 ok well first off I must say I was incredibly dissapointed with the crowd in st louis. I don't think there has ever been a gathering of such unworthy people watching tool. you could call it a convention of people who......well paint the picture yourself. the set was unreal, great lights like always, great musicianship like always, and great vibe. mainly I liked how maynard insulted the crowd, yet they still cheered as if he were praising them. pathetic. I guess some people are kinda slow with thinking and more intrested in agreeing with whatever anyone says that's on a stage. so the vibe was set early on with maynard's help, kinda like what I was thinking came out of maynard's mouth, so what I was thinking did get to the audience. maynard was very active during the show, and seemed to be having a nice time. but I guess all in all, it was great to see someone have the gall to stand up to an audience and have them cheer him on. so I was totally impressed and if you go to a show, I really hope you know what you're doing, because if you are as pathetic as some people who are now attending tool shows now are, I pity thine soul. later.

Review written by: Adam Boyette, Grapevine, TX (Adam0906@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/27/98 21:29:51 Wow, I can't believe that only 1 review so far knew the mystery song!!! Haven't you all downloaded the March mp3's? That song is my favorite cover, and I was very surprised and happy to hear it. Well, when I read a review, the setlist is the first (and often only) thing I look for, so here goes: Part of Me Stinkfist (w/ Reverend Buzz) You Lied (again w/ buzz, and yes, a Peach cover) (-) ions (only the first half or so) Sober Third Eye nema Jerk-off Living in Grapevine, Texas (near Dallas), I had quite a drive ahead of me. We left Thursday night, did the Arch Friday afternoon when we got there, and waited for Saturday to roll around. Tool's show was amazing (of course) and definitely worth the 25+ hours round-trip we spent in my Toyota. About the in-between-song stuff: After Part of Me Maynard assured us that he loved us, but we were the ugliest mother fuckers he'd ever seen. He pleaded with us not to breed anymore. Then he introduced Reverend Buzz before Stinkfist, and when You Lied started out, I knew right away what it was. (Funny, Buzz also played Stinkfist and then You Lied at the March show in Phoenix... any future show-goers take note) There was the Jacob's Ladder thing from (-) ions for a few seconds, then the long intro to Sober. I didn't notice Maynard leave, but when he came back when Sober started, he was minus his suit and wig and down to his boxers. After Sober he said "don't breed" does not mean "don't fuck." He made the porno music background comment (which I had forgotten, but damn that was hilarious), and then they showed the "Think for yourself..." clip. Before nema, Maynard said it wasn't about bad real estate, but about getting back in touch with what's important. Before Jerk-off, he told us that this was their last song, that Ozzy was next, and that we should start cheering and not quit until Ozzy started playing. If there was any doubt, Tool blew everyone else away on Saturday. If you haven't seen them yet, make a point to do so now and maybe you'll hear You Lied. -Adam Boyette (who met Drew from TN off of the Hook-up page. Definitely a cool guy. And who didn't meet Bill the Katt, since he chose not to read my mail until after the show) ;)

Review written by: Adam Lancaster (alanca1@tiger.lsu.edu) Review posted on: 07/27/98 19:40:56 I haven't read ANY of the other reviews for any Ozzfest shows yet, so I'll probably repeat some things. Setlist, as I remember it: 1) Part Of Me 2) Stinkfist, which Maynard called "Low Fiber Diet". This is a new one on me. 3) ? (If this was No Quarter, I'll shoot myself, because I SHOULD know that.) 4) Sober 5) AEnema (sorry, no diphthong) 6) Third Eye 7) Jerkoff Maynard came out in a grey suit and white wig and asked the crowd, "Can you feel it!?" Either here or after Part Of Me, he called the crowd the "ugliest group of God's unholy children" he had ever seen and directed them to stop making babies. After a short pause he said, "Just kidding, calm down!" After Part Of Me, he introduced a long haired guy as the "Rev. Buzz Melvin" who would help them play a song called Low Fiber Diet. They did some tweaking to Stinkfist; there was an extra minute or so of instruments thrown in right before "I'll...keep...digging". Then they played a song which sounded slightly familiar, but I just couldn't pick up on. During this song, Maynard removed his wig. Also during this song, the guy next to me, who was wearing a TOOL shirt, SAT DOWN! What the hell was this worthless sack doing there if he wasn't going to watch TOOL. I could barely take my eyes off the stage the entire hour, and this dipshit sits down after twelve minutes or so. So if you're out there "Mr. Row HH Seat 57", you really are a disgrace to those of us who really are fans. So next time, just buy yourself a lawn ticket, and keep out of the seats so the people who really do want to WATCH TOOl as well as hear them can have more room. Okay, sorry. After the mystery song, the band went immediately into an instrumental portion which I recognized as the long intro to Sober. At this time Maynard left the stage to remove his suit. He came back in the classic shorts. During Sober, the video screens showed footage of what looked like eye surgery. After Sober, Maynard said something to the effect of "What I said earlier, about the making babies, doesn't mean I want you to stop fucking. In fact, I wish you were fucking right now. Don't mind us up here. We'll just provide you with a little background porno music...So go to it...But for God's sake, use a condom." Before AEnema, Maynard said that soem people thought that it was a song about bad real estate purchases or decisions, but that it was actually about returning to the way things used to be, about finding the collective pool of consciousness, diving in, and learning to swim. As seems to be the usual for live shows, he reversed the "Fuck L. Ron Hubbard" part and the "Fuck retro-anything" part. I believe after AEnema, we were shown a short clip of a man's face in moving orange and reds (possibly Leary, I don't know). It began with "Think for yourself. Defy authority" and lasted for about a minute before it cycled over.

Review written by: Eric J (monkey@apex.net) Review posted on: 07/27/98 17:40:31 I'm sorry to say that I missed the second stage acts since I was holding my little dry piece of ground to sit and fighting off out of control moshers. However, I drove to St Louis from KY to see Tool and Ozzy. I had seen Tool before at Lollapalooza in Nashville, TN. The sound at Starwood in Nashville far exceeds that at Riverport. So there is my first gripe. Secondly, Tool really let me down. I think they were there only to fill their 1 hour gap and get the hell out. Nothing like I saw at Lollapalooza. Maynard's reptile moves were almost nil and the extended dance version of Sober should have been saved for a Tool headliner concert. I've seen everyone's review about how Maynard was telling us to fuck and use condoms and how he wished we were fucking right now. In my opinion he was "cutting us down" "making fun" of the lifeless crowd in St Louis. Perhaps this was the reason for the pitiful performance. I hate to say this people because I am a huge fan of TooL, but I saw a much better performance with many more songs and alot more emotion in the same amount of time in Nashville last year. I can only say I was surprised and enjoyed hearing the tracks from OPIATE, and I think Maynard summed it all up on the last line "I should play God...and FUCK you myself." Well, you did, Maynard. $35, 5-6 songs in an hour...my ass is still hurting. I'll catch TooL at Memphis, hope it's a better show.

Review written by: ~~~RYAN~~~ (XzxTOOLxzX@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/27/98 15:49:52 Ok.....Here it goes!! I have been waiting for ever for this day. I didn't sleep for 24 hours before OzzFest. I was so pumped. I WAS GONNA SEE TooL LIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME!! Well, first I would like to say that all the bands I saw did a good job. Except for Sevendust. They were kinda suckin ass. Anyways, If you are going to OzzFest soon, be sure to see: Soulfly, Incubis, Snot, Limp Bizkit, Coal Chamber, and of course, TooL!! Now for the TooL show. Danny came out first wearing a green Spalding shirt and cutoff shorts. Justin had on pants and no shirt. Adam was in all gray (mebbe black), and last but not least, Maynard came out in a gray suit, with a bible and a white w ig on. I could barly see Danny cause the setup was weird. Danny to the FAR LEFT, then Maynard, then Justin, then Adam. It was weird. There were these shoulder high things all over the stage. They looked like trash can and they had lights on top. The y were cool. They made a bunch of colors and effects and shit. It was neato. Behind the band, there was a projection screen thingy were they put images and movies and shit during songs. I can't remember when MJK said the stuff, but the following are things he said. NOT QUOTED. - You are all ugly. You need to stop breeding. Go over to that t-shirt stand over there and buy a condom keychain. Just kidding. - Remember earlier when I told you all to stop breeding? That doesn't mean you should stop fucking. I still want you to fuck. This is a concert, you should be fucking right now!! Those are some of the things he said. Maynard was very talkitive. I just can't remember what he said. Maynard was also hyper. Jumping around like a maniac. Adam and Justin just stood there. They looked bored. Like they had better things to do. Well, here is the set list: 1: Part Of Me 2: Stinkfist (with some guy from The Melvins) 3: Some weird song. I didn't know the name. Also played wth the Melvins guy 4: Another werid song. Mostly just distorsion 5: Sober 6: Third Eye 7: Aenema 8: Jerk-Off If TooL would have cut the shit out for the 3rd and 4th song, they could have put another song in. I was made. I think they were just wasting time. The whole band sat on the stage and let the feedback ring for like 15 minutes. It made me mad!! Well, overall TooL put on a great show. The effects were awesome, the band was awesome, and the songs sounded great. I have been a fan ever since Aenima, and TooL has been my favorite band for a while. They did a great job, and I really comend the m for there preformance. GREAT JOB TooL!! ~~~RYAN~~~ ~~~XzxTOOLxzX@aol.com~~~

Review written by: dusty (inhiding25@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/27/98 14:40:14 okay....probably the very last person to review Ozzfest StLouis, but hell if I care. I went for...Tool of course. Never ever seen them, so I was ready. My friend and I showed up just in time for System of a Down to start going on second stage. They weren't bad but I swear I thought I was seeing Rage without Tom Morello's squealing guitarwork. oh well they still got people going. Snot was next, we got in the pit for that and it was crazy. I wasn't that impressed with Snot as I was with System, but they were energetic and the pit fed off them. Incubus was next and I enjoyed that a bunch. Crowd was going for that too. First stage was already up and rollin with Kilgore then Sevendust. Only caught the last bit of Sevendust and they were good. Coal Chamber....about what I expected, I was bored so we wandered around. Soulfly was redundant and seemed to be up there forever. While Dave (my friend) and I were wandering around we found the backstage door and we weren't standing for ten minutes before out popped the man the myth and legend Danny Carey. I recognized him instantly and he kinda sorta got mobbed but he signed my ticket stub and stuff. Thanx Danny. We saw the singers for Coal Chamber and Sevendust too but I just hung around looking for Maynard, Adam or Justin. No such luck. Well I went back in for L.Bizkit I was curious. GODDAMN...they don't call them LIMP bizkit for nothing, it could easily be Lame or Loser Bizkit...I was so fucking disappointed. Aside from rising from the huge toilet onstage and running around into the pit on the lawn and back down the aisles, Fred Durst (I think that's the lead singer) was awful, he wouldn't shut up between songs and kept tryin to act hardass asking for some more fucking noise and all. Pathetic. Anyway enuff ranting....Megadeth, not bad, but I went to meet Incubus. then..... Tool came out....Danny's HUGE set, off to the side, Maynard in the preacher getup, the grey suit and wig, Bible I think (I was pretty far back). Part of Me to start, which was cool b.c I love all of Tool's stuff; not a bandwagon Aenima fan. Disappointed me that nobody got up until they played Stinkfist next...Buzz from the Melvins came out and did that and another cover which I can't remember the name, Maynard mentioned it but hell...After he told us we were "the Ugliest group he's seen on tour....QUIT BREEDING!! Use a fucking condom!!" heh heh...well he left to change and the guys kinda held the fort down with 15-20 minutes of noise and feedback. Maynard comes back in boxers and says when he told us to quit breeding, he didn't mean stop have sex. "in fact I'd prefer you'd be fucking right now, don't mind us, we're just youre personal porno music. But for God sakes use a condom..." Preach on Reverend.....so this trippy picture of Tim Leary came on the screen and they played Third Eye. I think Sober was next but I'm not sure. Anyway they played that somewhere and it sounded good of course. People got going with that cuz they knew that. Maynard talked about "bad real estate choices" and "reconnecting with each other" and immediately I thought Aenema and yes they taught us to learn to swim. That was cool feeling Danny's double bass in my chest...ooooh yeah....Maynard switched the "Fuck L Ron Hubbard..." stanza with "Fuck Retro Anything..." cool still. Last but not least was Jerkoff and God what a way to end it....So Fucking Good....Maynard's voice was on target that night. Everyone kicked ass. I was so emotionally drained that we left, didn't see Ozzy. Oh well. My first experience with Tool left me wanting more. Kinda sucked they didn't get to play longer, I really hoped to hear FortySix and Two. but alas I'll get another chance....later.

Review written by: Scar (scar moi@aol.com) Review posted on: 07/27/98 13:57:57 Well, well. The show, in short, was awesome. The day was beautiful as well, hardly any sun...even a little drizzle. (cold). So, you wanna know what happened at Ozzfest in St. Louis? Well, I'll tell you. Other Acts: We hardly visited the second stage during the day so I can't tell you much about what went on with Life of Agony, System of a Down, the Melvins, etc. (but all you really want to hear about is Tool, right?) Anyway, Kilgore (first main stage act ) weren't bad, but the place really started picking up when Sevendust took the stage. Lajon & co. delivered another excellent performance (it was my second time seeing them live), and they really woke the crowd up with welcoming cries of "THIS IS THE OZZF EST!" and incredibly strong vocals. Soulfly did a nice job, but I'm not too familiar with them, so there's not much I can say. At about this time, unbeknownst to me, a couple of my friends that we hadn't met up with yet were sitting out on the lawn near t he front gates where the band trailers were, getting Lajon from Sevendust to sign their ticket stubs...and sitting next to what they didn't realize was Coal Chamber...and then a drum technitian for one of the second stage bands came out and started talkin g to them. He wanted to take them back to the trailers, but once he found that they were a bit younger than the girls the cops were willing to allow in that area, he stopped offering. One of my friends was stressing to him how she'd give anything to see T ool backstage (she, like me, came pretty much only for these guys) but the guy just laughed. He said, "NObody's gonna see Tool after the show. They don't personalize much with their fans...no one sees them until just before and just after they go on anywa y...and Maynard-I've only talked to him a couple times...he's probably the most antisocial person I've ever met..!" (ooo!) Getting back to the show, Coal Chamber blew me away completely (nice nipple tape, Mike) and afterwards, Limp Bizkit (although I'm no t a huge fan) proved to be hilarious. Fred Durst ran through the seating area and down through the pit on the lawn (with security chasing him all the way) asking us to chant, "Fuck Limp Bizkit!" over and over...Well, the next act was Megadeth. ::ahem:: a nd THEN came... TOOL: I won't bother to post the setlist since it has already been done. Tool's setup took less than 30 minutes, but when Adam, Danny, Justin, and finally Maynard took the stage I was in *heaven*. Watching through binoculars, I could see pretty well, especially since we were already in the center about 40 rows back. ::toolgasm:: Maynard came out as a televangelist, with a suit and a white wig, but later stripped down to his boxers (ah god). Some ni ce person already posted Maynard's comments throughout the show (which were pretty accurate), so I won't repeat them. Danny was kind of swallowed behind his drumset, and Adam and Justin basically stood and played (which was enough for me), but Maynard was incredible. ::toolgasm:: The way the red light shone on him while he was dancing...it was hypnotic and very beautiful. (and I'd damn glad that he decided to strip down to his boxers, because that man has an incredible body! *yeah, yeah, that was the litt le girl in me putting in her two cents worth*) I remember Maynard smiling really big during one of the last songs at something someone in the front rows was doing, and it struck me because it's the first time I think I've seen him smiling. The set seemed, as most people have been saying, pretty short, but Tool's songs are lengthy and they played an extended intro into Sober. After the last notes died down ::toolgasm:: Maynard told us to keep cheering until Ozzy came onstage, and as the band walked backsta ge and got their towles, Maynard threw a bottle of water into the crowd. Ozzy, although we had to leave halfway through his set, was wonderful as usual, and OzzTV left everyone laughing. All in all, it was a GREAT night, and for being my first Tool show e ver, I was *very impressed* and forever wounded...thank you, Kabir, and thank you, Tool.

Review written by: bc (bjc77@hotmail.com) Review posted on: 07/27/98 12:39:57 This was my first time to see TOOL and they kicked ass. They blew everyone else away at OzzFest. I was a little disappointed about how short it was though. We could have heard at least one other song if they wouldn't have screwed around so much before Sober. What was that song they played before Sober? Is that a cover tune? I've never heard it. Part of ME and Jerk Off were the best. I really wish they would have played Eulogy. Maynard was really getting into the music and was very talkative all night. I couldnt believe how perfect they sounded live. I can't wait till they go on their own tour so I can see them play longer. Other than Tool, Limp Bizquit put on a descent show. They had the pit going the strongest. Especially when they played the Korn song "Wicked", the pit just erupted. I missed Sevendust which sucked. Does anyone know what time they were on? And I got their just as Coal Chamber was playing.

Review written by: Bill the Katt (bilkat@flashemail) Review posted on: 07/27/98 11:06:54 Well, gee, since I see no one else has made a record of this show, I guess I'll have to do the duty. The day (for me) started quite early. It being my birthday, I wanted to get a decent buzz before entering the fray. We arrived as Snot was playing, and, while not being utterly repulsive, they didn't exactly jazz my juices either. We made our way to the mainstage just as Kilgore was taking the stage. What they lack in musical ability, they make up for in effort. Next was Coal Chamber. I thought they sounded A LOT like Korn, what with their bass style and everything. I guess if you're a fan of Korn, make sure you see them. Soulfly was next, joined by incubus leadsinger for a few songs, as well as Fred from Limp Bizkit (who seemed to join just about EVERYBODY's act). I was impressed by Soulfly, mainly (I think) because I had never seen Sepultura live. I imagined a that is what this act would have been like. We then made our way to catch Ultraspank, cuz' some- body said they sounded a little like Tool. All I have to say is: absolutely NOT. They only way they were similar to Tool is in the fact that both bands are on Ozzfest this year. Seeing Ultraspank and eating diner made us miss LB (no big dissapointment) and next was Megadeth. Never having been a fan, I was curious. All I have to say is, they were REALLY loud and they need a new soundman. Loud is fine if you can actually discern noises from one another. Their set sounded like distortiong mixed with feedback and screaming. FINALLY Tool takes the stage with Maynard in his Televangalist outfit, wig & bible & all. Justin was shirtless, Adam appeard to just hide way over on the right side of the stage and I couldn't see Danny too well, since they put his drum-set on the lefts side of the stage and kind of turned it towards the middle of the stage. Here is the set list as I heard it: 1) Part of Me 2) Stinkfist (w/ Buzz Melvin) 3) You Lied (w/ Buzz Melvin) 4) Sober (w/ REALLY long Adam & Justin Freaky-Feedback hour, I think this was to facilitate Maynard changing) 4a) Shortened (-) ions 5) Third Eye 6) nema 7) Jerk-Off Maynard interjected his opinions during the show by saying several things before and after songs. After Part of Me: (not exact quotes) You people are the ugliest bunch of God's spawn I have ever seen in my life. Stop breeding. We have keychains at the t-shirt stand with condoms in them. Use them. Put them on. Stop breeding right now. It's a joke. Relax. After Sober: That thing before about not breeding...that doesn't mean I don't want you fucking. Acutally I would prefer if you were fucking right now. Before nema: Some people think this is a song about bad real estate choices. It's actually about getting back in touch with your inner self. With what makes us all one with each other. Learning how to swim again. Before Jerk-Off: Alright, this is it, I want you guys to keep screaming all the way up until Ozzy comes out. All in all, I was a little disappointed I didn't get to hear Undertow, Floow, or the new Pushit, but, I did get to hear Jerk-Off and Third Eye. Also, Tool sounded thousands of times better than any other band. I mean, whoever Tool's soundman is, they better start paying him ludicrous amounts of money. Finally, I was glad I got a chance to see Ozzy before he died. He wasn't exactly what I would call the best entertainer in the the world, but, for a 50-year old ex-drug addict/alcoholic, he certainly tries hard and has a shitload of fun. Bill T. Katt Ack Thbbbt.
