page: title: author: WILMA December 1996 Tool may be the ideal modern rock band. They combine exceptional music with creative album art and meaningful cutting edge videos, while still providing their fans with a live show that has been called unforgettable. The Who's And How's A very brief history of the band In 1986, guitarist Adam Jones moved to Los Angeles from Libertyville, Illinois. Jones supported himself as a sculptor and special effects designer where he learned the stop-motion camera techniques. Jones met Maynard James Keenan who had came to L.A. from The East Coast. Danny Carey, a drummer who'd worked with Green Jello and Pygmy Love Circus lived downstairs from Keenan. Soon, bassist Paul D'Amour, who'd recently migrated to L.A. from Spokane, Washington, was introduced through a mutual friend of Jones and so Tool was born in April of 1991. In November of 1991 Tool signed with Zoo Entertainment The band hits the road for their first national tour in February of 1992 In March of 1992 Tool releases their first EP "Opiate." It is not until April of 1993Tool's first full length album "Undertow" hits the street. "Undertow" is certified Gold in September of 1993 less under six months after its release. Less than a year later in August of 1994 "Undertow" is certified platinum in the United States. The following September of 1995 bassist Paul D'Amour departs Tool. In November of 1995 Justin Chancellor, former member of the UK band Peach joins Tool as their new bass player. October of 1996 Tool releases "nima" and begins their U.S. tour. What Tool Has To Say... THE ALBUM NIMA "...it's all about change and evolution individually as well as universally. It's also about unity..." Maynard James Keenan "...one of the goals of the record, among a lot of things, was to make it obvious to all the materialistic idiots that energy is primary and the illusion of matter is secondary..." Danny Carey "...it's like an amusement park, where you can jump in on any ride or alternatively you can swallow the whole tab and be taken hostage. The treatment will be brutal and rigorous and the demands so great but you'll walk away from it saying that you were treated very well..." Justin Chancellor "... the segues were just a necessary part of the record to make it flow cohesively, a complete entity..." Danny Carey THE SONGS MESSAGE TO HARRY MANBACK "...this song explores sound and emotion in an odd way. If you don't know English or Italian, this song might sound very much like a passionate love poem, but in actuality it's a message from a person that is very angry, very hurt and very bitter..." Maynard James Keenan NEGATIVE IONS "...they are known to make people feel good, so that's our feel good song for the record..." Danny Carey "...if you listen carefully you can hear the rubble subsiding into a glorious new landscape. Only then are you afforded the clarity of mind essential to pry open your third eye..." Justin Chancellor THIRD EYE "...addresses the subject matter of the entire album. It's the ultimate extended remix of nema..." Justin Chancellor THE ART OF SONGWRITING "...with us it can be a long tedious process because every idea gets tortured and drawn and quartered..." Danny Carey "...we spent two years in the South of France at the Renne LeChateau writing the record. We recorded and mixed it on an 8-track in three days at Casablanca Recording Studios..." Maynard James Keenan "...our main goal when we're together is to write music in a forum where we can involve our subconscious as well as our conscious. To make that happen we use every tool available to us, be it sigils, mind altering chemicals, fragrances or whatever modern technology can supply..." Danny Carey TOURING AND THE ROAD "...I can't wait to get on with touring because it's the communion of our music on a much more personal level in a greater way than recording..." Justin Chancellor "...no recording can capture what happens in a room with four people who have a similar cause and believe in it. Especially the way we play. Live is what our band is about..." Danny Carey "...kids will mosh to anything these days, but there are those people in the crowd that the music reaches on a deeper psychological and subconscious level..." Danny Carey THEMSELVES AS A BAND "...when we started the band we all had our own jobs. We did this as a side project, we never intended to get signed. It was all about the music, music that inspires and music that creates thought..." Adam Jones "...I'm sorry. Could you repeat the question? I was thinking of something else..." Maynard James Keenan "...the band is strong right now, all the cylinders are firing. There's more focus than there was ever before. The projects are only going to get bigger and better..." Danny Carey "...I've never come across or been part of a collection of souls so diverse in character and belief that possess the ability to mutually accommodate those differences and evolve them into positive creativity..." Justin Chancellor "...we're one of the few bands who hasn't had to play any lame fashion games, we've always been able to put art first..." Danny Carey "...we're all individuals and have our own opinions. We end up meeting in the middle and producing what you hear as Tool..." Adam Jones ON THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE BAND JUSTIN CHANCELLOR "..we accept him, one of us, gobba gobba, gobba gobba, one of us, one of us. He's a @%/&!..." Danny Carey "...We have a new bass player?..." Maynard James Keenan MISC "...I've been studying ritual magic lately and two of the key ingredients I'm missing are books by Osman Spare and a Scarlet Woman. Any help would be greatly appreciated..." Danny Carey "...I lost my copy of "The Joyful Guide to Lacrymology" in the Castaic Lake brush fire along with many of my personal belongings. If someone could mail me a copy of the book, I would greatly appreciate it..." Maynard James Keenan
