Hailing from Spokane, WA, D'amour left in Sept. '95 to play guitar in a band called Lusk. Lost And Found: -One of drummer Carey's hobbies is ritual magic. He wants to let everyone know he's looking for books by Austin Osman Spare and Scarlet Woman. -Singer Maynard Keenan is looking for a copy of "The Joyful Guide to Lacrymology" Part 2: ABOUT THE BAND How the band formed: Guitarist Adam Jones and singer Keenan became friends after they moved to LA in the '80's from the Midwest and East Coast respectively. Both being musicians, they soon jammed together. Luckily, Keenan's downstairs neighbour, Danny Carey, was an accomplished drummer who agreed to sit in with them. Someone who knew both Jones and original bassis D'amour introduced the 2, and soon D'amour completed the line up of the soon to be named band, Tool. HOW A NEW BASSIST WAS HIRED "I met Tool about 4 years ago by a quirk of fate, now I'm part of the recipe."-Justin Chancellor was chosen over Kyuss' Scott Reader, and Filter's Frank Cavanagh as the new Tool bass player. TOOL STATS: DATE FORMED: April '91 BANDS TOOL HAS OPENED FOR: Rollins Band, Fishbone, Rage BANDS WHO HAVE OPENED FOR TOOL: Failure LABEL: Zoo Entertainment. Signed in November 1991, just 7 months after forming. BANDS TOOL HAS BEEN COMPARED TO: Rage, Korn, Helmet "Weirdest" GIGS(according to Tool): 2 sold-out shows at LA's Church of Scientology Celebrity Center in April 1993 LOLLAPALOOZA HISTORY: Tool was at the 2nd stage at Lollapalozza 1993. PART 3: About the Music: ALBUMS: Undertow: released 4/93 on Zoo Entertainment AENIMA: released 10/96 on Zoo Entertainment Marko Fox of Pygmy Love Circus, a band that drummer Carey once played for, shouts in German on "Die Eier Von Satan". EP'S: Opiate: released 3/92 on Zoo Entertainment SINGLES: "Sober" and "Prison Sex" were the singles from Undertow. Aenima's first single is : Stinkfist. SALES: Opiate was certified gold(500,000) in Jan. 1996. Undertow went gold in Sept. 1993, and platinum in Dec. 1995. VIDEOS: both videos from Undertow, Sober + Prison Sex, were done in stop-motion animation by guitarist Adam Jones AWARDS: Tool won the 1993 Billboard Music Video Awards for Best New Artist, and their video for "Sober" won for Best Clip, Hard Rock/Metal -Prison Sex was nominated for 1995's MTV Music Video Awards' Best Special Effects category. MOST CONTROVERSIAL SONG: "Hooker With A Penis" from AENIMA. ALBUM DEDICATIONS: AENIMA features a panel of artwork depicting comedian Bill Hicks in a white lab coat testing the joints of a mutant boy with leg braces. The panel is captioned: Bill Hicks, another Dead Hero". At the end of "Third Eye", the album's final track, there is a part of a Bill Hicks routine. Hicks, a comedian known for his black, realist humor died of a pancreatic cancer fairly recently, was a friend of the band.
